In Fate and Life: The Mystery of Vaulinhorn, Celestial Novel's first work and masterpiece, we grapple with the mysterious events involving Vaulinhorn, a city no stranger to crime and the capital of Noswistan, as Maive Clara Rose, a detective in her 40s with a tragic past now undercover as a university lecturer investigating recent disappearances in the town.
Our heroine is determined to solve the case, thereby protecting her loved ones, and perhaps even unraveling the fog shrouding the killing of her parents, a nightmare that has haunted her for 20 years.
In the unpredictable balancing act between Fate and Life, will she succumb to corruption or remain loyal to her loved ones? A question, this one, that only the player will be able to answer.
It's a multiple-choice visual novel with a female protagonist in which the choices will drive her towards a more libertine or more moderate approach to strangers and familiars, substantially determining her degree of corruption or loyalty and leading her to one of the two respective endings. Since the choices are made in the third person, these involve secondary characters as well.
Although the story has its own meaning and importance, Fate and Life does not cease to be a porn game and it is to the logic of this genre that it underlies, although that doesn't stop it from also having a few colossal explanations to piece together the events of the story.
Technically speaking, the models of the girls are very well made, all of them physically either top-notch MILFs with a bimbo past or bimbos in disguise with an assured MILF future, the animations instead remain simpler and more essential, therefore it is the build up of the scenes that generally gives the greatest satisfaction compared to the climax when they come to life. The soundtrack on the other hand is very pleasant and appropriate and there is also a partial dubbing of the narrator's voice and some well-made cinematics in UE5 that punctuate the narration between one chapter and another.
From the dawn of its development in August 2022 to the final release in February 2025 the title has undergone a certain morphological mutation, for example Alfred, Matias and their companions were scaled down, this should help explain some oddities in certain dialogues and the somewhat bizarre attitudes in certain interactions, furthermore, and definitely much more importantly, the face of the Joyce model has been replaced for copyright reasons, as it was previously based on Mama from Death Stranding, with glasses and everything, also losing loads and loads of points in the change with the current one, she is still a hottie, but the old model for me was spectacular, it's also a shame that no girl has inherited her glasses!
Aside from some residual test saves on pages 14 and 15, note also the title lacks the Steam Cloud save feature.
[spoiler]Personal note: for me Joyce is still the best girl, regardless of the change of face, because, among other things, she knows what she wants, she doesn't hide it too much and she actively works to get it, a bit like the second one, Rebecca, who is a militant slut and knows it, then follows Nayla, who is a younger and more naive version of her mother, but who is also more proactive in putting herself on the line and maybe even an unaware slut by her own, then Maive, who certainly would have all the right cards, but unfortunately she shines mostly towards at the end, not that she starts off badly, but since she's the protagonist this disadvantages her a bit, also her being too prudish in her thoughts penalizes her, of course, in the Love Path and at the beginning of the Corruption Path it's perfectly fine, but to carry it on for so long even there for me is a bit of a shame, and lastly Yuna, who promises well but has little space.

In Fate and Life: The Mystery of Vaulinhorn, prima opera e capolavoro di Celestial Novel, siamo alle prese con i misteriosi eventi che coinvolgono Vaulinhorn, città non estranea al crimine e capitale del Noswistan, nei panni di Maive Clara Rose, una detective sui 40 anni dal tragico passato adesso sotto copertura come docente universitaria, che indaga sulle recenti sparizioni avvenute in città.
La nostra eroina è determinata a risolvere la caso, proteggendo i suoi cari, e magari dipanando pure la nebbia che avvolge l'uccisione dei suoi genitori, un incubo che la perseguita da 20 anni.
Nell'imprevedibile gioco di equilibri tra Destino e Vita, cederà alla corruzione o rimarrà fedele ai suoi cari? Una domanda, questa, a cui solo il giocatore potrà rispondere.
Si tratta di visual novel a scelta multipla con protagonista femminile nella quale le scelte piloteranno il comportamento della nostra Maive verso un approccio più libertino o più morigerato nei confronti di sconosciuti e familiari, determinandone sostanzialmente il grado di corruzione o fedeltà e conducendola ad uno dei due rispettivi finali. Essendo le scelte poste in terza persona, queste coinvolgono anche i personaggi secondari.
Nonostante la storia abbia un suo significato e una sua importanza, Fate and Life non cessa per questo di essere un gioco porno ed è alle logiche di questo genere che sottostà, anche se ciò non impedisce anche l'impiego di alcuni spiegoni colossali per mettere insieme gli eventi della vicenda.
Tecnicamente parlando, i modelli delle ragazze sono molto ben fatti, tutte fisicamente o MILF di prim'ordine con un passato da bimbo oppure bimbo in divenire sotto mentite spoglie con un futuro da MILF assicurato, le animazioni invece rimangono più semplici ed essenziali, è pertanto la costruzione delle scene a dare generalmente le soddisfazioni maggiori rispetto al momento culminante quando queste prendono vita. La colonna sonora d'altro canto è molto piacevole e azzeccata e non manca inoltre un parziale doppiaggio della voce narrante e alcuni filmati in UE5 ben realizzati che scandiscono la narrazione tra un capitolo e l'altro.
Dagli albori del suo sviluppo nell'agosto del 2022 alla release finale di febbraio 2025 il titolo ha subito una certa mutazione morfologica, per esempio Alfred, Matias e i loro compagni erano ridimensionati, questo dovrebbe aiutare a spiegare alcune stranezze in certi dialoghi e gli atteggiamenti un po' bizzarri in certe interazioni, inoltre, e decisamente molto più importante, la faccia del modello di Joyce è stato sostituito per motivi di copyright, in quanto prima era basato su Mama di Death Stranding, con occhiali e tutto, peraltro perdendo carrettate e carrettate di punti nel cambio con quello attuale, rimane comunque una gnoccona, ma il vecchio modello per me era spettacolare, peccato inoltre che nessuna ragazza ne ha ereditato gli occhiali!
A parte alcuni salvataggi di test residui a pagina 14 e 15, si noti anche il titolo è privo della funzionalità di salvataggio su Steam Cloud.
[spoiler]Nota personale: per me rimane comunque Joyce la best girl, indipendentemente dal cambio di viso, perché, tra le altre cose, sa quello che vuole, non lo nasconde più di tanto e si adopera attivamente per prenderselo, un po' come la seconda, Rebecca, che è una zoccola militante e sa di esserlo, segue poi Nayla, che è una versione più giovane e ingenua di sua madre, ma che è anche più proattiva nel mettersi in gioco e forse mignotteggia già di suo inconsciamente, quindi Maive, che di sicuro avrebbe tutte le carte in regola, ma purtroppo splende soprattutto verso la fine, non che parta male, ma essendo la protagonista questo me la svantaggia un po', inoltre il suo essere troppo pudica nel pensiero la penalizza, beninteso, nel Love Path e all'inizio del Corruption Path va benissimo, ma portarlo avanti per così tanto anche lì per me è un po' um peccato, e infine Yuna, che promette bene ma ha poco spazio.
