Far Cry® Primal

The Far Cry games aren't exactly known for brilliant mechanics. The gameplay is quite basic and has remained largely unchanged since the second iteration of the franchise. Despite this formulaic approach, I’ve enjoyed almost every entry so far, with the exception of Far Cry 2, and now, Far Cry Primal. I think the reason I liked so many of the previous games is because they at least offered decent writing, interesting characters, or an engaging setting. The third game gave us Vaas, the fourth had a wonderfully unhinged, colorful dictator, and Blood Dragon was entirely brilliant. Even Far Cry 5 was an altogether great experience, balancing a captivating story with surprisingly above-average gameplay. Primal, however, fails on almost all fronts. While it does add a beastmaster ability that is fun to play around with, the world and the characters are incredibly dull. It's cave people with cave people priorities: food, shelter, and punching other cave people. The map just feels like an empty forest full of animals, leaving no interesting history or legacy to explore. Despite not completely hating the game, and actually seeing it through to the end, I can't in good conscience recommend it.
