It was a lot of fun to work on this and animate all the beloved foes and familiars for it! Got to work with some incredible people on it, too! I hope you all enjoy it :) Bonus: In case anyone is curious, here is the collectibles lore book that didn't end up making it into the game. Also, I bet you can't beat my speedrun record , teehee!

It feels bad leaving a negative review for a free game, but there's just not a lot here. You click on a node which tells you what types of enemies you're going to fight. Then you place down your units on the board and begin the fight. That's... the entire game. Every couple of stages the game gives you another unit but it doesn't seem like you can actually choose which one you get. So there's no experimentation using different units which is the main draw of most auto-battlers. There's only a few unit types and the game is very short (won first try in around 5 minutes). Sometimes things pop up on the screen that you can click, I didn't actually notice them until the last few stages but only one of the three symbols I clicked on seemed to do anything. This is a cute prototype for a game design class but shouldn't really be on Steam.
full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/GdCO_X6tR5c It's a very cute game and I love the character models/ending I feel like it could have more in the way of difficulty and ways to get the player a bit more involved but it's made by students, free to play, and I enjoyed it!
This game was a lot of fun to play, animations were cute, my mushroom crab never let me down vanquishing my enemies. And the surprising amount of loooorreeee

Familiar - Battle of the Labyrinth is a student project from DigiPen. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... and certainly and professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. This kinda looks like they let elementary school kids into DigiPen. This "I can't belive it's not Adobe Flash" game is really primitive... just drop down your critters and fight, tap on some cards to collect them... was this supposed to be a mobile app or something? Why is this on Steam? Not to make gaming better, that's for sure. Once more, developers have put themselves before gamers and as a result we have another woefully bad product with no value whatsoever for gamers to deal with. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for gamers who have to wade through this stuff to find professionally made 3D games. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
