This was an entertaining mystery romp that turned most tropes on their head. I hadn’t played Overboard!, its parent game, before- so I was surprised and delighted to realize that it was, in fact, me whodunnit and the entire point was to become a worse person in order to come out ahead of the repercussions. I will admit, at a certain point the loops just felt a bit grindy and I apparently wasn’t quite clever enough to figure everything out, so I had to look up a guide on how to properly finish a winning run. Overall, however, a fun time.
ACTUAL CINEMA i like this almost as much as i like overboard its just harder
So I finally finished the game. I honestly love it a lot I love her so much and I hope we see more of her evil ways.
This review is specially made for those who like to get all the achievements in games. Minor spoilers ahead. Expelled! is sort of a visual novel detective game where your choices play a huge part in the story and everything you do and don’t do will come back to bite you later on. It uses the same presentation and visual style as Overboard! but adds a morality system that unlocks new dialogue options and actions as you get increasingly more naughty. The story overall is well written and engaging and with each playthrough you’ll keep discovering new secrets and information about the characters that can be used later as leverage, specially at the end of the afternoon when your “judgement” takes place. I don’t want to spoil too much but something interesting happens to the story as you get truly evil. The visual style is different from Overboard! but has a similar cartoonish look, but with a ticker dark outline instead of the bright highlights. The background where the locations are picked is more detailed but also the several different places inside the school where you can go to. The sound is minimal, with no narration or voice acting, just a few words and sound effects and some “F Bombs” if you enable profanity. The gameplay is simple to learn but will require a few runs to memorize the characters location and some trial and error until you get the information and discover the best actions and dialogues to prevent you from being expelled. Fortunately the game has a sort of metaprogression saver,
which is your "Filth book” where all the rumours and secrets are recorded, you just need to read it each day.
The achievements aren’t particularly hard but to get a huge part of them you need to interact with a particular item that enables being even more evil and later on redeem yourself:
the owl statue in the Owl's Office
. I had to look for this on a guide, but I still managed to finish the game and find the rest of the secrets alone. Btw, you can also use the right mouse button to make the text go faster, only read about this near the end of the game. Achievements: How many: 21 Achievements. How much time: Around 8 hours, almost my own, but if you follow a guide it takes less than an hour. Game difficulty: Easy, even without a guide, it’s only a question of time needed. Achievements’ Difficulty: Easy, with a guide. There are no missables, but there are some secrets that are hard to find without a guide. Overall opinion: Expelled! follows the blueprint of Overboard! but improves the complexity of the story and the variety of dialogue and actions available and adds a sort of morality system. It’s engaging and will make you want to know what really happened. Expelled! is an utter delight. Inkle remain masters of the genre, and this game - though relatively short - is dripping with charm from its art design, writing, music all the way to Amelia Tyler's excellent voice performance as our protagonist.
This game is absolutely a joy to play, it's like the best non-linear storybook unfolding before your eyes. I started the game, intending to play it in my off-time a bit, but I was glued, gripped by the central mystery. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the writing is so fun. I have a bunch of fun just running through this game on my steam deck. I will say however, that the price tag doesn't justify the length of the game, or the amount of content you get. I 100% everything (using a guide) but it was completed in 13 hours. For a similar price, I got Silksong, (or could have bought a physical book and read it a longer time.) I would personally wait until the game has a huge sale, and get it then. I just paid the price for it because I love inkle studios alot, and their previous work with Sourcery justified it.
this game was super fun to complete 100%, if you enjoyed their first game this one is way better imo, it was better built and more through with details and endings ! although takes more time and thinking to get to the true ending BUT it's really worth the detour, it's funny and brilliant in their own unique way but you have to be ready for repetitive dialogues, it's not an easy game on that detail, you have to repeat actions and dialogues multiple times to get what you want/need especially if you get stuck on what to do next so it's something to accept in order to appreciate the game anyway, i'd recommend breaks and not trying to do it in one sitting ! the experience would be better this way
Very compelling. I'd love to see more in the Veronica series.
