I wish there was a "meh" option for Steam sometimes, and this is one such example. A fun enough little action game, but truthfully quite short for the main game. Beat it about 4 hours, 5 to be safe. I assume 100% completion would take a few more hours total, like 8-10? I didn't care enough to 100% the game, despite how short it is. The core gameplay is ok, and controls are fine. Music and sound fit in well and aren't grating... mostly The little voicelines, however, got annoying as time went on. I actually disliked the main character's voiceline quips all the time. Story and writing however... well read on. However, as I played, a lot of little gripes appeared that I had to write down. If you can tolerate these gripes, I believe you'll find enjoyment with the game. Below you will find all my nitpicks/issues with the game, in no particular order. 1: 4th wall breaks are far too heavy handed, and the game is too reliant on current age video game and pop culture references. Said references usually don't age well. 2: Controls are fine, but some fights felt unfairly hectic early game. executions are slow, and in serious fights, are often not something you can go for safely when all other enemies are targeting you. 3: I don't like how i have to wander around to find the element i need. Why can i have all elements on my person that i swap at will, with a cooldown perhaps? Or maybe any in-world elements you find "supercharge" your abilities perhaps? As it stands, I didn't like being limited to only 2 elements and, throughout the majority of the game, having to haphazardly find other elements when i needed them. 4: Hated how i stumbled into some fights, unsure of what type of enemy I was going to face, only to have to deal with enemies resistant to the 2 spells i had, and no way to change them in the arena I am stuck in. So i had to tickle them to death. slow and unfun. 5: Having to deal with enemies resistant to damage I might be dealing, but then often having limited choice nearby of other spell types to grab? It feels bad. NOTE: this point is more for random fights. Major boss fights usually have things designed so this is not so much of an issue. Some of the points above overlap a bit, but they were annoying enough to write down while I played. Overall, glad i got it on sale, but sort of wished I'd bought it on 50% sale rather than 30%. In the end, there was still an odd charm to this game, and I can feel care and effort was put into this game. However, I feel most folks would not be missing out skipping this game. I BARELY recommend this game, and only barely.
"This game is truly enjoyable! I absolutely love the content and gameplay. Great job! ✨"
This game was a lot of fun and brought me lots of smiles. Finally a chance to fight for Evil! The themes and style it brings are wonderful. I love crude silly humor, I love hellish things, I love bad guys, I found myself engrossed in helping our Evil Wizard reclaim his throne by slashing and fire-balling and thunder-bolting pesky good guys, all the while collecting goofy ducklings for the shelf. If this sounds like you, grab your robe and enjoy! I played on Linux and am happy to report the experience was perfect out of the box! The game does not support 3440x1440 Ultra-wide as far as I could figure out, so if you're in this camp expect 2560x1440 with black bars.

Evil Wizard, developed by Rubber Duck Games and published by E-Home Entertainment Development Company Ltd., takes a familiar fantasy setup and cleverly flips it on its head. Instead of casting the player as a righteous hero saving the world, the game puts you in the robes of a defeated dark lord clawing his way back to power after being overthrown by a band of self-proclaimed heroes. This reversal immediately gives the experience a distinct personality, and the game leans into it with a tone that mixes lighthearted humor, sarcasm, and a playful jab at traditional RPG tropes. At its heart, the game is a fast-paced top-down action RPG that emphasizes fluid combat and constant movement. Rather than relying on simple attacks, players are encouraged to experiment with a range of magical abilities tied to different elements. Each spell has its own behavior, strengths, and situational uses, making combat feel more dynamic than a standard hack-and-slash approach. Switching abilities mid-fight becomes essential, especially when dealing with varied enemy types and environmental interactions. The result is a combat system that feels responsive and engaging, rewarding players who adapt quickly and make thoughtful use of their toolkit. Progression is structured around the gradual restoration of the wizard’s lost power. As you push deeper into the game’s interconnected environments, you unlock new abilities, upgrades, and enhancements that expand your options both in combat and exploration. There’s a noticeable influence from Metroidvania design here, with certain paths and secrets only becoming accessible after acquiring specific powers. While the world isn’t overly complex, it strikes a balance between openness and clarity, allowing players to explore without feeling lost while still offering incentives to revisit earlier areas. The game’s presentation plays a significant role in its appeal. Its pixel art style is colorful and detailed, bringing environments and characters to life with a sense of charm and personality. Animations are smooth, and enemy designs are varied enough to keep encounters visually interesting. Complementing this is a tone that never takes itself too seriously. Dialogue often pokes fun at genre conventions, and the protagonist’s role as a disgruntled villain adds a layer of humor that carries through the entire experience. This lighthearted approach helps distinguish the game from more traditional fantasy RPGs. Despite these strengths, the experience is not without its limitations. While combat starts off feeling fresh and engaging, it can become somewhat repetitive over time due to a limited pool of enemy behaviors and encounter variations. Some abilities also overshadow others in effectiveness, which can reduce the incentive to experiment in later stages. Additionally, while the exploration elements are enjoyable, the level design doesn’t always fully capitalize on its potential, occasionally feeling straightforward rather than deeply interconnected. Difficulty is generally well-balanced, making the game approachable without sacrificing challenge. Encounters require attention and proper use of abilities, but the game rarely becomes overly punishing. Boss fights stand out as highlights, often demanding more deliberate strategy and offering satisfying tests of skill. These moments help maintain a steady pacing and provide memorable peaks throughout the campaign. The narrative remains relatively simple, focusing primarily on the wizard’s quest to reclaim power and exact revenge. While it doesn’t delve deeply into character development or lore, it doesn’t need to—its charm lies in its tone and perspective rather than in complex storytelling. The humor and personality woven into the dialogue do much of the heavy lifting, keeping the experience engaging even when the plot itself remains straightforward. In the end, Evil Wizard is a polished and entertaining action RPG that succeeds by combining solid mechanics with a distinctive personality. It may not push the boundaries of the genre in terms of depth or innovation, but it delivers a consistently enjoyable experience that is easy to get into and satisfying to play. For players looking for a lighthearted yet engaging adventure with responsive combat and a unique twist on familiar themes, it offers plenty to enjoy. Rating: 8/10
Fantastic game. Very much a labor of love and it shows. A lot of references, fun magic gameplay, and interesting elemental interactions! I love the combat and tongue in cheek humor.
