This game is a fun top down tactical game (a la X-Com) and was challenging after the tutorial. The General is super useful with his Inspire ability, but make sure you keep him safe, unlike I did... Some gameplay can be viewed on my Free2Play Weekly episode at https://youtu.be/HC5bHOmEFsQ?t=427.
this game is surprisingly good except how you can choose any level i wish their was some kind of campaign for it which would be really cool i also love the fact that you can rally and grenade other enemies which i find very helpful when theirs only 3 against 6 and their all close range and together, please add a campaign !
5.5/10 Simplified XCom in WW2 setting TLDR: the combat system will remind XCom initially. However, it ends up a boring positional grind where you're just waiting for high rolls of the die... Neutral vote Good: + free + the core idea of a simplified XCom/Jagged Alliance-like game is interesting. Instead of HP, it uses 2 intermediate soldier states between "okay" and "dead": yellow ("pinned") in which the soldier can't move and red ("suppressed") in which can only throw a grenade. Hitting shots push the soldier down this hierarchy of states by 1, 2, or 3 pegs depending on a die roll So-so: +/- sitting behind sandbags is overpowered. Also, sandbags seem to provide a boost to defense regardless of the attacker's position. So, flanking or even coming from behind to a guy near a sandbag is pointless. Maybe it's a bug... +/- 3D models and the environment are low-poly and seem to be made for mobile? In fact, I'm not even sure such a simple TBS should have been 3D. The trees hide the solders. You can't rotate camera +/- camera only centers on enemies when a solder starts his turn. He can easily move outside the camera's view. And the target of his shots are not shown at all. So you have to wait until your turn to actually see the effects of opponent's actions Bad: - attack ranges are tile-based and it's impossible to see which tiles are in range or enemies and which aren't. You have to do manual counting of tiles often. In some cases, I pressed "Shoot" to see which tiles are in my range, to deduce which tiles would be inside enemy range. This could have been avoided by simply showing "danger" of tiles as highlights. Jagged Alliance 2 Unfinished Business had this for example - ultimately the combat system is just not satisfying and too simplistic. Moving forward is clearly bad if you see several enemies crouched behind a line of sandbags. The game essentially is split into popshot matches as enemies rush at your guys sitting behind bags, or your rushes with the whole crowd at fortified enemies with the goal to just throw a grenade with those of yours that survive for 1 turn. Overall, there isn't much variety, and too much depends on randomness. Tactical depth is very limited - soldiers are anonymous pawns, with no stats, no personality, no xp, no improvements. This is exacerbated by usage of the same model for every soldier. This contrasts with the somewhat realistic environment My impression is that the setting for the game is just wrong and is the cause of its problems. WW2 begs either for a grand strategy, with whole armies moving on a country-scale map (like Panzer General), or personal squad fights where each soldier has stats, biography and inventories (like Silent Storm). For a combat system this simple, it could be robots in some sci-fi setting, with 2D top-down view and pixelated. With a simpler presentation, the issues of the combat system would become clearer and easier to fix, as simply less time would be wasted waiting for the animations of those soldiers. Maybe even new systems could appear, as robots are just more flexible and allow for more sci-fi things. After all, here barracks keep producing new units every few turns. That's ridiculous for WW2, yet with robots it could be a factory or maybe a sci-fi portal producing them just fine.
Warning: Asset Flip! "ETO" is one of literally thousands of creatively bankrupt asset flips infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere.
This is a very barebones Unity asset flip, the developer ripped off the Toon Soldiers WW2 Edition asset pack created by real developer, Polygon Blacksmith, slapped his own name on it, and combined it with a basic turn based tactical strategy game blueprint. Yawn. It was a dismal failure, of course, gamers on Steam can smell an asset flip from a mile away. So, "ETO" is partially or completely made up of stock assets, "borrowed" from asset stores and free asset websites. Little, if anything in this game is the creation of the "developer". While there's no up front price for this asset flip, the other problem with asset flips is that when developers aren't capable of doing their job and creating high quality assets, it's also true they can't do any of the rest of the job of a game developer either. That's definitely true for "ETO", and this kind of asset flipping never results in games that have quality or value for PC gamers. We're left with wondering what "ETO" stands for and the best I could come up with is "Everything Taken from Other people". On pricing, this is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The "developer" of this garbage asset flip admits this is an asset flip, he couldn't do his job properly so he took assets from someone else. Then he breaches Valve guidelines with a weird, rambling word salad of a meltdown over a fully factual and informative review full of broken English and spelling mistakes... angry that gamers were informed about a product. What a weird, and troubling overreaction. Some people seem to have a lot of problems with the truth. Let's break down this breakdown. The first thing the developer wants everyone to know is that they are "The Main Character". You, as a gamer, don't matter. They breach Valve guidelines for developers just to complain about a fully accurate and informative review (with facts their ego doesn't like). It's evident from their attitude that they never created this product with gamers in mind. They did so to stroke their own ego. When developers, especially failed ones who would never be able to get a professional job in the industry, put themselves before gamers, we end up with garbage products like this. In an attempt to discredit the facts and validity of my review the developer seems to think that the game must be played for several hours before determining any objective facts about it. Apparently, before deciding a carton of rancid milk has gone sour, the developer thinks we must drink the whole carton before we're allowed to tell anyone the milk has gone off. What rubbish. Playing a bad game for longer will not make the graphics better, cause the code to change, controls to become better, or fix any bugs or other defects in it. If they can attack the review, they can pretend their game doesn't suffer from the defects this review highlights. This is outright delusion, unfortunately. It does not take very long for the defects in this game to become apparent. Playing the game for longer will not change them. The developer claims this is their first time trying to make a game. If I went to a restaurant, got sick from eating bad food, and got told "The chef is new and has never cooked food before", would that make it okay? No, it wouldn't. The developer supplied a very valid reason why this should never have been published on Steam in the first place. The developer KNEW this was crap but published it anyway. Why? He's the main character. Never considered what gamers want. Steam exists only for this one guy and his fragile ego. Compounding this, given their own personal incapability, incompetence and inadequacy, the developer admits they also didn't hire a team of talented staff to produce the game and tried to do the whole thing on their own, instead. This is a lot like boarding an airplane, and halfway through the flight, having the pilot come out and serve peanuts. It's going to end in disaster. It requires a team of competent people to do a complex job properly, and that's not what has happened here... another explanation for the poor quality of this game. The "developer" argues that I review a lot of games, therefore this game review isn't valid or truthful. Huh. If I changed all my other reviews to positive, would the graphics and gameplay of this crap game suddenly improve? No. The developer seeks any possible angle to throw shade at me personally to discredit my review. You can see what they are trying to do, trying desperately to make this review about this garbage product about me instead of his failure. If this was the only review I have ever written, would that change any of the properties of this game or alter the facts contained in my review? Of course not. My reviews for other games have no bearing on the dismal quality of this failed product. But stalking me to desperately try make this review about me instead of about this garbage is, frankly, creepy. The developer complains that they "worked very hard" to make this, therefore it cannot be a bad product. What bizarre rubbish. If I had "worked hard" for years and the result was this godawful game, I'd be utterly ashamed of my failure. Hard work doesn't mean quality work, it just highlights the incompetence here. For us gamers, for whom games are made (the developer seems to have forgotten that), it doesn't matter if GTA:V was made by one guy in a shed over the space of a weekend and Depression Question took 1000 staff working for 5 years to make, what matters is the resultant quality of the product. You can see the intellectual dishonesty and sheer arrogance and self-centredness of the developer made apparent from their comments. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
It's always difficult to rate a game badly when you can play it for free. But sorry, I just didn't enjoy it. It lacks depth in particular.
