This was not playtested very thoroughly. In gunfights, the tall scenery is constantly obscuring your view, making it impossible to see what's right in front of you. And what's right in front of you is typically a guy murdering you while you struggle to get somewhere where the camera isn't lodged in some building 10 floors away.
It's cyberpunk Hotline Miami, and the soundtrack fkn slaps. Beat it in about 3.5 hours.
Game bugs out after certain point and it's impossible to progress. Support is non-existent.
Esse Proxy is a cyberpunk action shooter developed and published by FromSouthGames that blends fast-paced combat, narrative-driven storytelling, and a grim futuristic setting into a surprisingly ambitious indie experience. Set within a dystopian world plagued by corruption, criminal organizations, and social collapse, the game places players in the middle of a dangerous conflict where survival depends on quick reflexes and careful planning. Rather than relying solely on its futuristic aesthetic, the game uses its setting to support a story filled with conspiracies, personal struggles, and intersecting character arcs that gradually reveal the larger picture behind the chaos. The most striking aspect of Esse Proxy is its lethal combat system. Encounters are designed around the idea that both the player and enemies can be taken down in moments, creating an atmosphere where every decision matters. Success comes from learning enemy patterns, positioning effectively, and reacting quickly under pressure. This approach makes firefights feel intense and rewarding, especially when overcoming sections that initially seem impossible. The game demands concentration and patience, encouraging players to improve through practice rather than relying on upgrades or overwhelming firepower. Adding variety to the experience are three distinct protagonists, each bringing their own abilities and perspective to the narrative. Their stories intertwine throughout the campaign, giving players different viewpoints on the events unfolding within the city. These character changes are more than a storytelling device; they also affect gameplay, as each protagonist approaches combat situations differently. This structure helps maintain momentum throughout the adventure and gives the campaign a broader scope than many indie shooters of a similar size. The cyberpunk setting is one of the game's greatest strengths. Neon lights, industrial architecture, criminal syndicates, religious cults, and powerful institutions all contribute to a world that feels oppressive yet fascinating. The environments successfully communicate a sense of decay beneath technological advancement, capturing many of the themes associated with classic cyberpunk fiction. Exploring these locations reveals a city filled with secrets and hidden details that add depth to the overall narrative. Players willing to investigate beyond the main path will uncover additional lore and background information that enrich the story. Visually, Esse Proxy delivers a stylish presentation despite its independent origins. The top-down perspective provides a clear view of the action while still allowing the environments to showcase their atmosphere and design. Combined with a fitting soundtrack and energetic pacing, the audiovisual presentation helps maintain immersion during both combat-heavy moments and quieter story sequences. The game's artistic direction consistently reinforces the bleak tone of its world, making it memorable long after individual missions are completed. The demanding difficulty may not appeal to everyone. Players who enjoy challenging action games will likely appreciate the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering the mechanics and overcoming difficult encounters. Others may find the repeated failures frustrating, especially during sections that require near-perfect execution. The game rarely compromises its challenge, which strengthens its identity but may limit its accessibility for more casual audiences. While some elements occasionally reveal the limitations of a smaller production, such as minor rough edges in certain mechanics or pacing issues in a few sections, these shortcomings do little to undermine the overall experience. The combination of high-stakes combat, multiple playable characters, engaging worldbuilding, and a distinctive cyberpunk atmosphere allows the game to stand out among independent action titles. Esse Proxy succeeds because it remains focused on delivering a tense, skill-based experience while supporting that gameplay with a compelling setting and interconnected narrative. It is a game that rewards persistence, curiosity, and mastery, offering a satisfying challenge for players who enjoy intense shooters with a strong sense of style. Though not without flaws, it demonstrates impressive ambition and creativity from its developers and provides a memorable journey through a dark futuristic world. Rating: 7/10
I've played for only 27 minutes in total and already have an achievement that only 30% of people have... This is an extremely difficult game (playing on normal) You die in one shot (granted your enemies die the same way) ...but its to the point in that its not even fun.
Despite being visually appealing, this game is riddled with silly bugs to the point of being unplayable. The last drop for me was the level which apparently spawns you without being able to use weapon. You clearly see a gun (a specific model) in the HUD but you can neither use it nor do melee attacks. I then restarted the level and it respawned me with another character. But still without being able to shoot. I was unable to do any further progress in the game. Filed for a refund. This game clearly lacks some actual play testing and bug fixes. In many places I could just go out of bounds. Some floor panels were not tightly positioned and I could see the skybox behind it. Many places allow you to go out of bounds. One more thing I wanted to highlight was inconsistency with the keybindings. I am left handed so I always need to remap standard WASD keys. I was surprised that level select screen still showed WASD keys to pick level to load. The most annoying was that level restart action was linked to R key and there was no option to rebind it.
Cool Drawbacks: • Camera is too zoomed in, you have to manually zoom out quite frequently. Aiming cross-hair has a fixed radius and it doesn't track/follow your mouse.
