Blond, gay, anxious about money, doesn't want children or a monogamous relationship? if i liked to smoke, i'd be suing you for using my likeness without my permission! (He joked, trying to conceal how deeply De Tres al Cuarto affected him). I haven't tried all the games yet, but it's kind of funny how I initially thought I'd like 3 dimes the least and it ended up being my favorite so far, and will probably stay that way. I do wish some of the games were re-sizable, I want to enjoy substance of kin in full screen, for example. I recently found out eternal home floristry can be. it's so cool how, if you're in a certain frame of mind, in the beginning you're very interested in sort of "min-maxing" and like doing your absolute best and then around the middle, you start to settle for mediocrity, and the game is juuust long enough where the last two or three sets it kind of bottoms out into "it doesn't really matter what i do here, i can't progress or make a meaningful difference." and how you might just have been spinning your wheels the last few nights depending on how well you did mechanically. And then, of course, the proposal happens. This was a lot of rambling, I really liked it lol.
Loved it! It was really cool!
Great game which shows history and struggles of indy development, while allowing to appreciate art pieces of their career. While there's some glitches and junk in the games (especially first one, my God) the rising quality of craft makes games from 5th onward quite emotionally deep experiences and last game, made for this collection, made me reflect on my own relationship and close to tear up. Highly recommending.
I really enjoyed all the different types of stories and game play in this I really loved the behind the scenes of all the games I love hearing how the stories come up and why they decide to make it I will say I did have some favorites among them my top 3 are. 1. Behind Every Great One: I really fell hard for this game I think it's because I can relate to the story and themes talked about in this game I have been in multiple relationships/Friendships were someone can be so full of themselves that it feels suffocating and that person is also more successful to the point where they make you feel less then and how lonely and isolating that could make you feel I also don't know if it was intended but I also like how you can only do so many tasks in a day and if you don't finish some it gets brought up while the husband could of helped but instead he puts you down, I also like the depiction of panic attacks and It kinda caught me off guard at first. This one is my favorite just because how much I can relate to it and i highly playing it. 2. Eternal Home Floristry: I loved the characters I feel like Gordon and Sebastian are really well developed characters and I agree that they should continue or even make a prequel to this game the story is there and I loved the flower arranging mini game it reminded me of the making the bar drinks game in The Red Strings Club instead flowers have a meaning/ feeling associated with them. I feel like some topics should of been elaborated more on specifically the LGBT representation maybe since it wasn't a full game they couldn't add or explain more but I feel like they could of added more about Gordon being an ex hitman and allowing himself to be comfortable with dating someone which could also put that person in harms way due to his line of work I think that would of been a good topic for him to discuss and for Sebastian I really got the feels when he was talking about when you get older it gets lonely and you become someone that people only visit during events but again I really wish they explored more with this and bringing more into his experience in a relationship as an older man and maybe adding more details about their world since he's older he might of been around when the world was still normal and not making plants in labs but growing them naturally. 3. The Bookshelf Limbo: I love cozy games that explore self identity and this is a really good one it's one of the more slower games from the collection but I really enjoyed reading the reviews for every book and talking about identify and how you being yourself might affect people you love or them not understanding how they act make you feel I can relate to that since I never really brought up my identity with my parents because of small things they said or their actions but how I also want them to feel around me. This is one of those games where you can interpret anything about the character and his life and somehow link it to your own which I always feel like more games should because it adds more emotions to said character and adds some realness to the story as well. Overall I think all the games had some kind of uniqueness to them these are just my top 3 and I hope we see some of these stories and characters have their own full game somewhere down the line I really have loved playing games from these developers from Red Strings club to this and whatever is next I'll be there. <3 <3
I desperately need an extended version of "Dear Substance of Kin". Everything about it is perfect - vibes, plot, gameplay. Even the fact that you have no explanations at the start is interesting because you will figure everything out along the way. Long story short, you have powers to see people's lies and make their genuine desires come true (or act on your own will). And your decisions influence the world. Art is cool too. Everything is a bit dark, but as in a fairytail for grown-ups.
❗ For the English version, please scroll down. Behind Every Great One Dear Substance of Kin Supercontinent LTD и Zen and the Art of Transhumanism эмоций не вызывают вообще: это просто прототипы, концепции из которых авторы позже куда лучше раскрыли в своем главном хите The Red Strings Club. 10 ___ Buying a collection of anything is always a gamble, and Essays on Empathy is no exception. It is a compilation of bite-sized games created by Deconstructeam during time-constrained game jams, making it hard to evaluate as a single, cohesive experience. Depending on the specific game, your reactions will likely swing anywhere from genuine awe to sheer bafflement. The collection's value rests heavily on the standout titles that actually justify the purchase. Eternal Home Floristry is a masterclass in narrative design: you arrange bouquets for people, thereby influencing their fates, as each flower represents a specific emotion. The core metaphor is baked right into the mechanics: you physically do not have enough positive feelings for everyone who needs them. You have to consciously weave negative emotions into the arrangements, deciding which characters deserve comfort the most. De Tres Al Cuatro comes very close to this level of brilliance — half of the game is a simple deckbuilder about a pair of failing comedians, but in the second half, the developers implemented an excellent dialogue system. You literally see the disconnect between what the characters actually think, what they finally decide to say out loud, and what will ultimately happen to them in the future. Then come the projects that operate on a more subtle level and require a specific mood. Behind Every Great One builds palpable suspense and tells a powerful story about the devaluation of a loved one's labor, but it is emotionally exhausting to play — it is essentially a simulator for anxiety and repressed resentment. 11:45 A Vivid Life boasts a brilliant core concept where the player constructs the narrative by determining the origins of foreign objects inside the protagonist's body; unfortunately, the game does not offer much beyond this idea. The Bookshelf Limbo is a charming little greeting card of a game that perfectly captures the universally relatable experience of picking out a gift, but it lacks actual gameplay — it functions purely as a visual novel. Some games clearly suffer from the pitfalls of their experimental format. Dear Substance of Kin has a dark charm and a fairly deep premise, but its purely immersive storytelling is hard to read: if you don't pay close attention to the details, you will have no idea what is going on in the plot. In Engolasters, the mesmerizing unreality of the setting is paired with a survival mechanic where you have to keep the protagonist alive. These mechanics end up distracting from the story rather than complementing it (if you've played Gods Will Be Watching by the same studio, it is somewhat similar, just in real-time). Supercontinent LTD and Zen and the Art of Transhumanism fail to evoke any emotion at all. They are merely prototypes, featuring concepts that the developers later fleshed out much better in their smash hit, The Red Strings Club. Taken out of that context, they feel disjointed. Finally, the platformer Underground Hangovers feels like a completely random inclusion, entirely devoid of the studio's signature narrative DNA — but what else would you expect from the chronologically oldest game in the collection? Ultimately, you are essentially paying for two outstanding games that leave a lasting impression and push the titular theme of empathy to its absolute limit. There is a chance you might "click" with a couple of the bolder, more challenging experiments, too. The rest, however, feel like marginal doodles thrown into the collection just to pad out the runtime. Go in knowing that half the games in Essays on Empathy will literally be, as the Spanish say, de tres al cuatro — cheap, a dime a dozen — and just enjoy the ones that actually hit the mark. 8/10
Siempre adorando Deconstructeam <3
The Gods Will Be Watching,
I mostly only watched the documentary that was also presented alongside the games and the art involved to make said games, but so far I enjoyed it. I can't easily pinpoint why I would recommend it (although I will try), especially since I can believe people think this is too much to pay for a collection of games that are (mostly) free elsewhere. I guess, in the end, the simplest way to explain why is to say that the documentary pulled at my heartstrings. The conversations the devs have together aren't very structured (there is a structure, somewhere, but it's loose to say the least lmao), but they're real. I kinda sat there, listening, wondering why I was so touched. Why I kept playing the videos, one after the other, within one day, knowing that I could have spread it out, or rather, tried maybe experiencing the games they were talking about more than just opening them for a few seconds for the achievements. But I think it's probably because the stories themselves show me that there are people out there that create games and live off of it despite everything else around them. There's people out there - people who are willing to put their own stories forward in such a collection. I don't know. It's like 4 am as I am writing this. I don't have many concrete thoughts to say, if I am being honest. I just enjoyed seeing and geeting to know vignettes of the lives that made the games. And personally, even if 9/10 games are found elsewhere, even if you couldn't really care less about buying it exactly for that reason, I'd say the added documentary itself is worth the money I spent on this (especially since I bought it on sale in a bundle). The value lies in supporting this dev team, and in watching the videos where they all speak about the games they have made, and how, and their craft. Maybe those, in and of themselves, are the essays on empathy that are showcased. (Which the games sometimes fit, and sometimes don't, depending on the title.)
