About
Medieval Japan. An evil daimyo lord has stolen the treasures of Imperial family and hidden them in his castle in an attempt to seize power. As a young Shinobi apprentice, you have decided to sneak into the castle, recover the treasures and return them to their rightful owners to bring prominence to your clan. However, a member of a competing clan has also discovered daimyo's scheme and is on the same mission as you. Do whatever it takes to be the first to recover stolen items and bring honour to your clan.
Please check out the game manual in the sidebar for full explanation of all game mechanics!

if necessary, challenge your opponent in a direct fight
Use all of your shinobi training to accomplish the mission:
ninja's tools: locks and smoke bombs
powerful spirits you can summon to guard items and passages
defensive countermeasures to break tricks set up by your opponent
martial arts if a direct confrontation becomes inevitable
Play against the CPU or another player, over split-screen or network.

An awesome game inspired by old Spy vs Spy! And free. Highly recommended!
I would have gladly paid $15 for this. The fact it's free is even better. Online has no matchmaking, but you can just bother folks on your Steam friends list to download it; and the CPU puts up quite a fight as well. On the hardest difficulty it was barely even letting me glance at the lock combinations it would set, I'd have to be on top of my game in order to take it down (and I'm not there yet!)

It's great! I'll start with the art - detailed, expressive, and it perfectly captures the feeling of a Japanese castle. It also looks amazing in 3D. The game is a lot of fun to play - I played this morning against the computer and found it challenging enough (on easy... for now!). Great game!
Probably it´s a good game, but I can´t really find any enjoyment in it, with the two main problems probably being that the controls are scattered all over the keyboard, while you cant change them and the fact that the text is way too pixulated, so that I just didn´t end up reading how you should actually play the game and just ended up doing some random mess. Decide for yourself.

"Escape From Castle Matsumoto" is a 2D retro pixel game (I know, I know) with a few big differences from the rest of the amateur spam... this one has much higher production values, and most importantly it's a very faithful homage to the old Commodore 64 era of gaming. That authenticity is what most pixelcrap games lack, because in almost all cases, pixel "art" is just used as an excuse. It still looks bad, remember, it's the year 2025, nobody is paying $5000 on a gaming rig to play Commodore 64 games, but at least it's authentic. Gameplay is almost reminscient of the old Mad Magazine Spy vs Spy games where you fight an opponent in splitscreen... the Spy vs Spy traps here are replaced with an equally authentic 1980's The Last Ninja style ninja combat game. The problem chiefly aside from the pixel "art" are locked controls and a bit of incoherent and genuinely unsmooth gameplay feeling. While I said they're authentic, this features really godawful, lazy pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad (but authentic!) because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this. Yes, I really gave a "maybe" to a pixelcrap game. Certainly I hope the developer goes on to bigger and better things.
cool game.
