The designer of this game had been playing MTG a lot, and got sick of its annoying flaws. He got tired of mana screw and mana flood, he got tired from gay blue decks full of Cancel cards, he got tired from cheesy mill strats. He understood, that fixing the worst mana system in card game history (based on lands) is almost impossible, because it is deeply tied to many lands-related cards released in MTG. So he just decided to creare a new game that will be MTG but without those flaws. Pros: 1, One of the best resource systems so far. Each turn you get 1 gold coind, meaning both players are always equal in how many cards they can play each turn. All powerfull cards cost 1 gold, and weaker ones cost 0. You can play as many weak cards as you want. but there are restrictions of how many you can have in the deck. No more mana flood or mana screw, hoooray! 2. This game does not have the worst mechanics in the game - milling your opponent's deck to win. I play games to see epic games where creatures fighting each and mages cast powerfull spells burning each other's face! I do not want to watch how my opponents just take cards from one pile and moving them to another pile without even looking at them to win the game! In this game, you your deck somehow gets milled, you win the game instead of losing! 3. In MTG blue cancel cards that cost 2 mana can cancel you 10 mana cards you play - very balanced (not). This game does not have unbalanced "Cancel" cards. You can always play your cards and your opponent has to deal with them afterwards. 4. This games does not have the "heat-up" time as in other games do. You do not have to wait many turns and accumulate mana to cast your powerful cards, Here you can cast your best spells and champions from the very first turn. I like this pace a lot. 5. In magic only Blue cards have easy access to card draw, while other colors have such access quite limited. In Epic Card Game, each color has a lot of card draw. Many cards are duel-purposed, and you can play them for their main effect or instead you can play them do draw more cards. 6. Each color has access to removals and mass removals. The balance in this game is awesome - you can see 18-18 creature on the very first turn, but you may not care since you can remove it. And even having 0 cards on the field vs 10 monsters does not mean you lost, because there are so many removals that can reset the board. 7. The art on the cards is beautiful. One of the best art on fantasy-style card games. 8. You have access to all cards in the game and do no have to grind at all. No annoying daily and weekly qusts, no season pass that forces you to launch the game whether you want it or not. You can play whenever you want, and you always play and never grind. 9. The game is completely free. Cons: 1, All the pros refer to both digital and physical game. But the digital client itself is not fancy and modern like some other games out there. MTG Arena and Heartstone feel more "expensive", have better animations etc. This digital game client is mostly made to completent physical copy of the cards, so that you can try out decks before building them in real life. Or to have some duels when you can't play with your friend or can't viist your local game club. 2. The development of the game is fully completed - no more new content, bug fixing etc. However I haven't encountered any major bugs yet. 3. The AI opponent is not the smartest I've ever seen (but not the dumbest either). It mostly plays okay, but there are some flaws in its behavior that you can exploit one you learn it enough. But you definitely can test your decks against AI. 4. The most frustrating part in this game I had was during a campaign. It has a lot of voiced story text that you read before and after each mission. The story is about a betrayed demigod regaining his power. But after the very last mission there is no text, no description how the story ended, just a splash sceen "Congratulations, you won". Reading all that story to end like this was... unpleasantly surprising. But the campaign is like a tiny bonus part of the game you play once to learn the game and forget, so in general it's not a bad deal.

probably a nice CCG but overshadowed by a crapping engine and tutorial.
One of my favorite card games of all time!
The card art is cool, but overall the game is a bad mix of Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! mechanics implemented on a poor and often confusing virtual tabletop. I had written most of a wall of text to elaborate on why this isn't a great card game, but honestly I don't think the average Steam user cares enough, nor do I think the designers can fix the underlying card game. Rather than doing the deep dive I was going to do, I'll just highlight a few of the decisions that make this, in my view, a bad card game. 1) Board wipes/monster removal are everywhere, and most can be played on your opponent's turn. 2) Token summoners are everywhere, and many can be played on your opponent's turn. 3) Because you get 1 mana per turn, use or lose, cards can only ever cost 0 or 1. Therefore, many cards are nearly always worse than some other cards because the other cards do their job better in most situations. 4) Negate cards don't exist (at least for the 2 hours I played), so you just have to suck it up and deal with your opponent playing their turn on your turn and accept whatever effects they lay down - Even board wipes. 5) If your OPPONENT decks out, THEY win. This completely removes the risk/reward dynamic for turbo decks. It's just reward/more reward.
I've played all kinds of TCG for more than 23 years, especially MTG, which was my first. I'm going to brag a bit, and say that I performed quite well on a national level quite a few times (around early 2010), so I believe my expertise as a player has some level of legitimacy. Epic is the best card game I ever played. Period. And it's a damn shame how underrated it is.
Interface and user experience is very poor. Bad fonts, janky menus and animations, everything feels very poorly put together. Hopefully they've learned something about UI/UX for Hero Realms because I'd love to play that and spend money on it, but not if HR is in the same state.
Unintuitive, complicated, chaotic, clunky, and tries to be the jack of all trades which as we know excels in nothing...
The only other card game I have played it Pokemon and this one is way more fun. The verbiage can be confusing sometimes but it's fine once you learn it. I also have this game on my phone as an app so that's sick.
