Its so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ peak
Αmazing game but very difficult. Not the battles but solving the puzzles and understanding what to do next as well as where to find what you need next. Without help from the internet there was no way I could finish it.
there is almost something here but the save system and health management in this game is unbearable. It has made both attempts at trying to play this game impossible. The only health regen you get in this game is your ability. Saving doesnt heal you. defeating a boss doesnt heal you. and if you want to use the ability you have to get lucky three times with the castlevania candle sticks that it drops the material you need to use your heal. you essentially have to play this game hitless or risk losing all of your progress made. not even this original castlevania titles were this needlessly cruel. the aesthetics almost make this game passable its just completely unplayable.

shorter easier La-Mulana with nice art and innovations in hint tech
Originally posted on Dragon Quill. Comments are enabled there. This is La-Mulana if La-Mulana was fair. The puzzles are simpler, but that also means they’re less reliant on moon logic and one-off “I didn’t know I could do that” mechanics. You also start with the equivalent of the hand scanner, so you can jump straight into the ruins without needing to grind money for half an hour first. About the only thing I felt was unfair was the method to reveal the Armor of Protection, but that’s an optional item. I felt the boss fights were probably the weakest point; your attack range is very limited and most bosses fly all over the place, so often the fight comes down to whether they end up in a convenient position and whether or not their randomly-generated projectiles box you in. I’m also not a fan of the art style and some of the hitboxes are wonky. But overall, this definitely feels like what La-Mulana advertised itself to be, and I had a good time.
The gibberish noise used for people talking is possibly the worst sound I've ever heard in a game. There's also no instant text option or volume slider just for voices, so your only options are to mute all sound effects or suffer through it. I have no idea why the devs thought it was a good idea to put that noise in the game, but it sucks hard enough to ruin what would otherwise be a decent game. I'll note that I typically really like it when devs use gibberish when characters talk in games like this. There's a huge difference between gibberish that sounds good and gibberish that sounds bad, though.
Gonna have to be honest here, this game is godawful. It starts you off with learning that one of the two ways to heal costs in game currency. You think "oh, well that cant be the only way to heal, that would softlock the whole game." So you play for half an hour, dying over and over again, each time restarting you at your last save point. Until you eventually get a spell to heal yourself. The catch? It costs a different material (and soul) that is hardly ever dropped. You keep playing, though, until you find a boss fight with both contact damage and ranged attacks with poor hitboxes. You decide to leave the boss and see what you missed, maybe find a movement upgrade? After exploring, you gain a ranged offensive spell that somehow costs less than the anti-softlock spell. You try to check other rooms, some of which look to require a double jump to finish. But alas, no movement is to be found. "Go back to the boss fight, maybe there I'll gain something of note." So you try and you try, attempting to dodge the acid puddles that have no right to have a hitbox that big, until you finally see its body start to deteriorate. "Oh its finally over, lucky I had one health left," until you see it. The boss has another two sections. It may be immobile now, but that doesn't fix the godawful acid hitbox. You take a hit to it, and you're left at the menu screen. Does one start from the last save, with all frustrations of the fight and the platforming beforehand involved, or quit, knowing you just wasted an hour and a half of your life. I quit. Narrative aside, the game has clunky movement with precise platforming, a health bar that doesn't actually show how many hits you can take, flying enemies that have momentum (for some damned reason), inconsistent enemy drops (and spawns), and limited access to saving, despite how much the player dies. I played for an hour and a half, but my file says 29 minutes played. That means I spent twice as much time dying than actually progressing. TLDR; It's difficult for the same reasons that early retro games are difficult. If bad games for the monetary price of "free" are your style, feel free to sink those hours in.
