Maddmike Steam Curator Look, I’m not here to tell you that Elaria: The Corrupted Throne is secretly excellent. This old school RPG has got problems, half of them you’ve probably spotted in the few seconds of clips you’ve seen. It uses hodge-podged together store-bought assets and ugly fonts. The minimap is just an overhead camera in a box so it gets obstructed by weather effects and clouds. It’s click to move pathfinding can be really awkward sometimes: just clicking on a chest or interactive object won’t walk you over to it, you need to click right next to it first THEN click the object itself. You get the idea: I’ll save myself the trouble of making a list and caution that anyone looking to jump in themselves is best served by filtering the Steam reviews by negative and just looking at whatever is on top: I guarantee you whatever you’ll find there is correct. Yet none of Elaria’s jankiness prevented me from spending a very enjoyable 15 hours with its preview build over the past week. Sure, it’s a playable warning of why individual developers shouldn’t make expansive open world roleplaying games—yet its also a title uncompromised in its vision, and I’m willing to forgive a lot of ancillary stuff if the game ‘does the thing’ well. In Elaria’s case, that ‘thing’ is being a single player version of a pre-World of Warcraft MMO. It’s click heavy and auto attack focused: with your four action bar slots giving you access to some long-cooldown and deliberately cast spells. https://youtu.be/vFCXJhK17CU I think part of the secret-genius in why it works as well as it does; is because that vision itself is inherently janky. Every time I fumbled through my inventory mid combat to click on my health potions I was reminded of all those clunky free-to-play MMOs I played back in 2004 before I got my parents to agree to a WoW sub. All of the weird little idiosyncrasies inherent to a solo dev whose reach exceeds their grasp, ends up just reinforcing the same themes as the ambitious MMO’s of around the turn of the millenium that were learning and discovering their own genre in real time. One of the clearest signals Elaria sends you about the way it wants you to play comes from one of the first quests you’ll stumble across. After waking up as an amnesiac skeleton in a cave, a friendly spirit tells you to visit the nearby town to see if anyone can help you figure out your origins. Naturally, the guard at the gate has a quest for you to complete before he’ll let you in. Killing ten of the Sand Snakes on the nearby beach in itself wouldn’t be all that interesting of a task, but he specifically wants you to kill them on top of this sacrificial circle. Much like every other enemy in the game, the snakes congregate in packs way too large to fight directly. The lesson you’ll need to learn is one that MMO players are all too familiar with: figure out the Aggro range of the mobs so you can isolate one and kite him back to where you need. It is a tactic you will use constantly: despite no other quest in the game demanding this location-specific death, the kiting strategies are essential for most encounters. Once you get your attackspeed high enough, you can even weave some movements in between your auto attacks. Get a quick hit in then click away before your enemy can retaliate: it looks kind of ridiculous when you’re doing it but there’s a hypnotic rhythm to the whole thing, and it’s emblematic of how you ‘get good’ at Elaria. With combat and systems so simple, conquering this game gets a little abstract and more than a little ‘gamey’, and that’s what I love about it. My most memorable moments were taking on bosses whose numbers were higher than mine, and beating them by completely abusing their limitations. Movespeed is pretty easy to come by thanks to the fact that it’s tied to your basic agility stat, so once it's high enough you can outrun the bosses. One of them I beat by just circling the room and only moving in for strikes when all of my cooldowns were available. And for another boss I had a companion helping me out, so I baited the boss back and forth through the dungeon while my partner slowly chipped away at him. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3051934401 It won’t be for everyone and that is the ironic beauty of it: its combat is so simple that it demands you get weirdly technical to master it, and in doing so it creates a system that revels in its nostalgic plainness. Outside of the combat, Elaria relies on clear, repetitive tasks. You can screw off and ignore the main story if you want, but a loose following of the critical path will involve going to a town, grabbing a whole bunch of quests, then completing those quests out in the overworld or within one of the game's many dungeons; and of course that means mobs, loot, and all the experience points you’d expect. Abilities are tied to the weapon your using and can be switched liberally. You’ve got two weapon loadouts you can swap between mid combat: I comfortably fell into a pattern of using one loadout for passive buffs like strength and movespeed boosts, and the other for actual damage and combat utility. Elaria uses a classless system primarily driven by your base stats, you get points to spend every level up but importantly, you also get permanent stat increase from killing dungeon bosses. Each of these instances is home to mobs and dungeon-specific puzzles: they’re never all that deep but they’re also never reused, giving each of these lairs their own gameplay texture. Sometimes you’ll be flipping switches to open gates, and other times you’ll change the water level to create movable paths. The dungeons are repeatable thanks to interactive torches outside of their entrance: pay a fee to respawn everything so you can go increase your numbers some more, that is half the point of the game after all. And it wouldn’t be an old school RPG without a weirdly ubiquitous in universe card game that all the peasants want to play with you , so if you want to ignore the prophesied great conflict between worlds then… you can go play some “Adoh” if you want. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3051934504 But for me, I found contentment in the simple repetitiveness in its quests and dungeon delving. In many ways, Elaria’s skeleton protagonist is an apt metaphor for the kind of experience it delivers: not necessarily ‘thin’, but devoid of a layer or two you’d expect to be there. But that skeleton is healthy and purposeful. The bones of this adventure are here: complete with simple progression loops, varied dungeons to explore, and throwback MMO combat. In many ways one of its advantages is that it’s self selecting. If your first impression is to wince when you look at it then Elaria probably isn’t for you, but underneath a presentation that can be generously defined as ‘practical’, there is a game with clarity in its purpose and efficiency in its design. Its muse isn’t one particular title, but the aggregate feeling that a particular era of games can evoke. As completely ridiculous as it sounds: when I stepped off the boat to a new continent, with the wind howling in my ears and my eyes feasting on an ugly horizon with crappy view distance and mobs copy pasted unceremoniously as far as the eye can see: I felt this weird nostalgic pang. There’s an intangible, wistful beauty here if you’re willing to squint for it. And though I’d never accuse Elaria of being a well produced game, I do think it’s a good one.
This is a super fun little arpg where you arise as an amnesiac skeleton and have to figure out who you are. The controls are a little different to what i'm used to with other arpgs but i like that as it makes me think. There is lots of dungeon delving with a nice easy to find green lantern outside each dungeon that allows you to reset for 1000 ingame currency and redo for more loot/xp. The developer is easy to contact if any problems arise and quick to correct said problems. If you get bored of dungeon delving there's an ingame card game called Adoh to while away your hours having fun. Adoh is super easy to pick up and collecting all 100 cards will satisfy your completionist brain and then some :) If i had one quibble it would be that there is no overworld map option or quest markers on the minimap in the left corner.
The game is simple and enjoyable, with plenty of things to explore and discover. The gameplay is engaging, with decent visual effects. There are some drawbacks related to UX/UI, but overall, it provides decent entertainment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oab8j62Dw-E

I have had this game on my wishlist for a long time now and was excited to finally play it when i bought the game not long ago. The premise sounds fun and the intro to the game is well organised but there are alot of problems with this game. Most of them are small and honestly dont impact my experience at all, for instance when you go to open a loot chest/ talk to someone you click on the object to interact with it, but your character does not move into range of the object if he cant reach it so even though the prompt is there it does not activate until you manually move your character closer to the entity where it will then activate. There are other small problems but like i said they really wern't enough to dissuade me because i was having fun. But there are three big problems i have encountered which have really ruined the experience for me. First one is that unlocking abilities is not really explained. Each weapon changes the four abilities you have access to and I will admit alot of them sounded really cool and i wanted to try them out. But to start with you only have access to one of the four. I think that is fair enough, you dont want the played to trivialise the game without working for it and i can respect that! However, how do you get access to the other spells? I first thought it would be gated by level, so at the point i stopped i was level 28 i think? which means that you do not unlock them every 25 levels so it feels unlikely thats how you unlock them. Maybe you have to reach a certain stat ammount? for instance for the hammer which give you the physical stat buff maybe you need to have x ammount of might before you get the second skill? If that is how it works how can I tell how much you need? All of this is very confusing and not explained to the player. Second gripe, there is no way to reset your stats. This game throws new weapons and skill sets at you really fast which I like because that would normally mean you can experiment with different builds to find out what you like playing the most. But remember you cant access 3/4 of the skills for unknown reasons. Anyways when i woke up and started the tutorial I saw there was a Magic stat and was thinking HELL YEAH i can be a lil skele magician this is gunna be great! But i was disappointed because there was no starting magic weapon to use and I did not first get access to one until I found it in the south beach dungeon after two hrs of gameplay. This is bad for two reasons. First its bad because After you leave your tomb the game says not to return for a while because it is too dangerous for you at your level ( your too weak). This tells the player not to go into ANY dunegon until you are packing major heat! SO i get to the first encampment and search all the vendors inventories and sadly no magic weapons there either, if i had to guess it seems the vendors shops might rotate their stock randomly , as there were hodge podge pieces of gear from different sets I'd never seen before in there. INCLUDING MAGIC BUFFING ARMOUR but no weapon to go with it. So i give up and spend all my banked skill points because as the game tells you the enemies grow in strength quickly and that means you should too! Or you will struggle. Then i take some quests and one leads me to the south beach in search of someone, all i could find was a dungeon so in i go because i needed some excitement after the letdown of no access to magic. This brings me to the main problem with no stat resets, as I said before i found a couple magic weapons in this dungeon including a wand and the damage it does scales with intellect. BUT i have just dumped all my stats into physical so that i could even reach the chest it was in and with no way to reset my stats I would have to waste alot of levels pivoting into magic damage at this point. Very frustrating. Why was this wee wand not somewhere in the starting dungeon? Or if not that why is there not some sort of novice mage in the starting town who you could buy one from? Now then third gripe, I'm not going to lie this one might just be a me problem. In the afore mentioned dungeon. To gain access to an elevator which i can only guess takes you to the boss room, you must light up three braziers by doing three objectives in the dungeon. The first one i found was a wee mini boss, after defeating him One of the braziers lit up red. Now i have a goal which is to find the other two. So i back track and find a maze puzzle where by activating switches you changes which hallways are blocked and unblocked eventually gaining access to where the next brazier is hidden. I have a problem with this puzzle as well. When you activate a switch it moves a wall. Simple. But you cant tell which wall it is because it is never one connected to your tunnel. So you must move backwards and forwards through every hallway each time to even tell which one moved, sometimes you even work against yourself and have to go back to the same lever to untrap yourself. this is frustrating because of how slow your character moves and even with the dodge roll afforded to me by wielding a sword it was annoying. But along the way there are tons of chests so even if you are going in the wrong direction you gain access to new weapons! which you cant use 3/4 of the skills for... and some scale with stats you are not currently using... but moving on. at the end of the maze theres the brazier. interact with it and away the light goes back to the centre room! Now you must make your way back using the unintuitive lever puzzel again. For convinience sake it would have been better if by activating the brazier all of the walls of the maze lifted so you can make it back to the start again, or even just some of the walls so you have a straight path back? But i continue on because i think the boss might be fun to check out. So i return to the centre room after exploring the whole dungeon, every side room and every lever and every chest has been interacted with. Every enemy has been killed but the third brazier remains missing? The only thing i found were two levers which do not activate when you interact with them? They would normally move when you activate them accompanied by the sound of stone on stone grinding to tell you it is active and something has moved but nothing happened when i activated either??? So it is entirely possible i just missed something but the elevator to the boss was still inaccessible. I was locked into playing a melee build as physical was my dump stat. The game does not explain things clearly and even misses telling you some of the controls. Like that tab switches between your two equiped weapons giving you access to two hotbars of skills that you can only access 1/4 of and it is never said how to get the others. There are other problems but this is when i gave up as the game became twice as frustrating as it is enjoyable. I cannot recommend it in its current state and I am left letdown and dissapointed as this game has the potential to be tons of fun!!
What a piece of ****! Intro has no sense of direction, no tutorial, controls suck, keep dieing... then die more at the resurrection spot. Steaming pile of ****.
Reminds me of the old school ARPG's. Weapons determine your abilities, but you can also boost stat to effect things like HP, Regen, Dmg and Speed. Standard quests and puzzles for a ARPG, so if you into hack and slash, or spells with AOE effects give it a try!
Elaria is a fun little-ARPG-that-could with an addictive gameplay cycle that is perfect to play while listening to a podcast or watching a movie. I have ADHD so I'm constantly looking for games like these that encourage multitasking. it's not without its issues, which is understandable considering it's a debut game by a solo developer. And SO. MANY. assets are a god awful shade of dehydrated pee pee yellow... But you definitely get a ton of hours of playtime for your buck. Simple, addictive, fun. Which is all an ARPG really needs to be
Elaria: The Corrupted Throne is a fun old school rpg game that is fun to play. i see if you get this game you will get at less 15 hours of fun out of the game even more. there are alot of build's to run off the top of my head there's probably like 300+ builds you can do in the game with armor sets and weapon's you use.
