A young man named Katari drives to a cabin in the middle of nowhere to scatter his estranged father's ashes at the top of the mountain where he loved to spend most of his time. But after wasting some time destroying targets with a slingshot, he finds a piece of paper inside one of them containing clues that lead to a hidden place beneath the cabin, explaining his father's absence. His father was obsessed with an ancient civilization that supposedly lived in the mountains. After Katari scatters the ashes, he notices some strange markings on a nearby rock and objects hanging from trees. He investigates and opens a passage that leads him inside. This opening does a good job of telling you what the game is all about, which is mainly puzzle solving. The controls are standard for a first-person game, with the addition of a jump that's needed for only one small platforming challenge and a sprint that can't be used indefinitely because you'll eventually get tired. Stamina isn't displayed anywhere, but you'll start breathing heavily and slow down. Running isn't necessary, though, because nothing is chasing you and none of the puzzles require speed. There's also shooting with your slingshot, which uses different types of projectiles, and you can increase your shot's strength by holding down the fire button for a second or two. Progress is linear and blocked by various puzzles. You solve a few inside the cabin, involving rotating objects to match the correct patterns, entering the right sequences, and finding codes. They start out simple and easy to figure out, but you'll hit a wall near the beginning when trying to open the rock entrance. The solution is found by carefully examining your father's journal. Opening the journal should always be your first step when you encounter a puzzle because it unlocks new pages containing clues. Although you can solve everything on your own, there's a useful hint system that points you in the right direction if you get stuck. The usefulness of the hints depends on how many times you press the button, and each puzzle can have anywhere from two to four hints. They never reveal the solution, so you'll still have to figure it out yourself, but later on they become less useful and don't appear as often. The puzzles are nice and each room introduces something different, involving objects and devices left behind by a highly advanced civilization. You'll rotate mirrors to direct beams, memorize the correct path, rotate pillars, and more. You also obtain a crystal that reveals hidden writing and symbols, along with crystal projectiles that have different uses, such as slowing down time and restoring broken objects. This leads to at least one frustrating section that requires both speed and precision. The bad news is that the game is short, lasting around 2 to 3 hours if you're reasonably good at solving puzzles. It might just be because I became more comfortable with the game's rules and mechanics, but I found the puzzles near the cave entrance and the mirror beam puzzle immediately afterward much harder than anything that came later. The ending provides a satisfying resolution and explains everything properly, but you'll still wish there had been more.
JEJE
