https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmgSwI4sKSQ An enjoyable shootemup where you man a helicopter, go on various tasks and fend off zombies. There are plenty of levels in the game where you undertake objectives such as rescuing mission and collecting cargos. The addition of having multiple star points per level where the time it takes to complete a level or completing without casualties also adds some replayability to the game as you try to perfect your game. Along with the different objectives, boss fights with larger zombies also occur from time to time as you progress through the story. Along with this, you also have a team of people with different roles that you level up and grows as you progress. Controls are smooth and also simple enough to play with. The graphics and visuals are also nice with the minimalist design of the characters, enemies and environment gives an arcadey kind of feel to the game. It's also cool to see all the bullets and explosions being fired which causes hectic and mayhem. Overall It's a pretty fun game where you can just have some chaos and zombie fighting.
If you have to choose between cool concepts and great execution, great execution will always win. Dustoff Z is a game with a great concept. A basic helicopter game where you can blast hordes of zombies, rescue people, and then continue zombie blasting. However, when it comes to delivering on that concept, the game falls short in just enough places to make it feel like a waste of time.
Taking Off
Dustoff Z hits the mark in a few areas. The chunky aesthetic works for the silly design of zombies, makeshift helicopters, and over-the-top weaponry. It’s easy to discern everything around you while not requiring much effort to make it run smoothly. The choice in art style is one that I can appreciate and is one of the things that originally sparked my interest in the game. The idea of shooting at zombies from a helicopter is also pretty appealing. On paper, it doesn’t seem like it would be that challenging given the nature of zombies, but the various types of zombies make that more viable. These enemies can leap from the ground and grab onto your vehicle weighing it down and making it sluggish to maneuver so they can bash it up. Others will heave furniture such at you as you fly by. Some variants can fly with bat-like wings or even leap at you to detonate suicide bombs. These aren’t your grandpa’s zombies. I also found the upgrade systems to be solid for the most part. Iterating through a collection of unlocked helicopters with different roles, upgrading them, and adding gunners with different abilities created a solid system. It’s pretty easy to tangibly tell the difference as you upgrade systems and it’s a requirement for being successful as the missions become more complex and deadly.
Losing Altitude
The problem I have with Dustoff Z is that it’s just so sloppy. Every aspect of the gameplay feels like it’s needlessly imprecise. I spent as much time fighting the mechanics as I did fighting the zombies within it. The focus on physics seemed like it would add some entertaining moments, but more often than not it was just a disaster you had to try and overcome in order to progress. The place where this was most obvious was in the item pickups. They are the cornerstone of succeeding in the game but at the same time one of the most common ways I’d lose. Every enemy killed has a chance to drop health, fuel, or ammo. There seemed to be no correlation in the drops relative to what you needed, so if you had only a tiny bit of ammo, you could easily see several fuel drops in a row – even after being full. Then there was the issue that these items would always fall to the ground meaning you had to swoop down and put yourself right in the middle of the zombies to grab them before they blinked out of existence. To make this even worse, they could easily fall into an area extremely close to or underneath terrain debris and you coulnd’t get to them. Even when you could, it was difficult to even determine if or when you picked it up in many cases. Another area the game frustrated was with the limited scope of movement you could work with. I understand it’s necessary to squeeze in close to the ground to make the zombies feel like a threat, but it makes navigating the physical barriers seem ridiculous. Several times I had to strain at the top of the screen to try to get high enough to go over a barrier because the game wouldn’t allow me to fly high enough freely. This made boss fights downright stupid since you couldn’t easily fly over the top of the boss. You just had to fly into this giant creature and hope it allowed you to pass to the other side of the restricted boss fight area – or risk getting pummeled into the side.
Crash and Burn
One reason this disappoints me so much is that a previous game from this developer was much more fun for me. Dustoff Heli Rescue may be simpler, but it feels cohesive and functional. The challenge comes from mastering the controls, not fighting the physics. I get that Dustoff Z is trying to be an arcade-style experience, but it doesn’t excuse the sloppy execution in the bulk of the gameplay. The sad thing is, it seems like there’s some effort there to make the game comedic and they have some fairly solid voice acting for an indie title. If the game could sit at least on par mechanically with similar games of this style, it would definitely be a gem. However, even for the bargain couple of bucks I paid for it, it doesn’t deliver. For me to recommend a game, I have to have fun with it beyond any other requirements, and I couldn’t have fun here. In this new zombie game you do missions with your helicopter. There are some crazy helicopters to unlock. There are also people to unlock with each other weapons. You can hire them to fly with you and shoot at the zombies. The helicopters and shooters could be upgraded with money and other stuff you need to find in the levels. Each level has save points where ammo, health and gasoil could be filled up. Beside zombies, sharks could jump out the water to attack you. The danger is everywhere. There are zombies who jump on your helicopter, zombies who throw stuff at you, big boss zombies. The game has many levels with boss battles included. Enough to get you playing for a couple of hours. Here I got to the first boss: https://youtu.be/Fc1jyK75DO8
Few zombie apocalypse games give you a helicopter, and winching objects along the map to kill zombies is satisfying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0WdGasRj70 If you want to see my first impressions of gameplay as they happened, watch my video above. There's a weird glitch(?) during the tutorial that makes the game feel like it's crashing. I recommend using the keyboard controls through it and holding the relevant WASD keys to move instead of relying on the controller. Dustoff Z is what it says on the box. Helicopters are always a little awkward to control, and this plays to Dustoff Z's credit. Not only are there multiple helicopters, but upgrades will change their appearance, and you get further customization from minor paint differences (I wish there were more), gunners for each seat, and the variety of missions you'd expect: go somewhere, rescue people, kill things, escort, defend, etc. My one complaint is that it's easy to miss winchable objects. The first gif in the description shows a bladed contraption being drug out to the front of the base, but I completely missed that it was possible when playing that mission myself. Some things that you think might be winchable aren't. For me, the winch was what I was most excited about going into this game, and it was probably the part of the game I was most let down by because to how rarely it seemed to be usable. If you're looking for something casual and a little different, Dustoff Z might fit the bill. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, and it's an overall average game, but if you like the charm then you'll have a good time.
Simple but quite enjoyable gameplay! Will definitely keep you occupied for a while, the visuals style is also really nice.
