Information / Review English
Dungeon of Rikka is a Turn-based Rogue-like game developed by Poorly Drawn Squid. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2326235348
Gameplay / Story
A quiet village in the Middle Ages, which lives in peace, so beautiful to be really true. One day this is on the verge of destruction, because a sealed creature from prophecy has broken the seal and is about to return. The creature still lurks in the depths of the deepest dungeons and is slowly preparing. The exciting thing about the story is that the longer it takes you to get to it, the stronger and more powerful it becomes. But the beast didn't expect you and that's how you come into play. At the beginning you choose from 4 different classes such as berserker, warrior, magician or hunter and distribute 8 attribute points to the 4 areas, as we already know from other games like Knights of Pen and Paper. You are still nobody and nobody has ever seen you, let alone heard of you at all. With the help of the city dwellers like traders and magicians, you are slowly becoming powerful. You gradually fight your way through dangerous dungeons, caves and crypts so that you can unlock and receive the keys from the dungeons to advance. After each level up you can invest new attribute / skill points or buy new equipment or sell items after returning to the village. This is also necessary because if you die then everything was for nothing and you have to start over .. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2326235391
Pro
+ 4 different classes are available + matching graphics and music + tactical battles + Charm is present + nice menu navigation + Challenge + lots of items and equipment + Achievements
Contra
- sometimes really difficult - Playing time could have been a little longer
Conclusion
Dungeon of Rikka offers you an exciting mix of Battles, Levels and Strategy. I liked the game very much and can only recommend it. PS: First of all, many thanks to the developer who provided us with this key for the group.
Information / Review Deutsch
PS: First of all, many thanks to the developer who provided us with this key for the group. Somewhere in darkest times a lonely Village with a deep Dungon with a horrible Beast captured down there, a lonely Hero is going out to save the Day. Welcome to DIABLO….. ehm, no sorry, forget it, forget it. Another try. Welcome to DUNGEONS OF RIKKA. Yeah, thats finer. So what have got here? We have a wonderfull Journey to the Beginning of Role Play Games, short RPG. We have really nice Retro Graphics and the typical Sound for it. Also typical for good old RPGS, we have 4 Classes to Choose from. Warrior, Berserker, Mage and Ranger. Remember HERO QUEST? Right, feels familar, doesn`t it? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2339243745 So, whats next? The Village will help you as good as it can with an Inn, a Trader, an Echantress and a Hermit. And why are they doing that? Because we have one Dungeon 50 Levels down with a bad, baaaaaaaaad Beast. Well our Beast has enough of beeing shackled and soon will break them to get upstairs the 50 Levels to reach the Village and destroy it. Sounds bad, eh? And here comes our Hero into the Game. That Beast Dungeons is sealed. We need two Keys and here we have to enter 2 more Dungeons, the Crypt and the Cave to get that keys. These two Dungeons are our Chance to level our Character from Zero to Hero. Slaying Monsters, avoiding Traps, using Teleports, find better Equipment, upgrading after Leveling Up and much more, all that you have to do in a Classic Based RPG. BUT…. Yes, there is always a „but“, if not, it would be too easy, don`t you think, dear Reader? So, but this Game has Perma Dead. That means, you die, you start again. From the Beginning. At Zero, not Hero. And if this is not mean enough, you should know that you have an invisible Timeline. While you play, you get the message that show you the Beast broke it shackles and also when it reached the next Level. Mean, eh? Okay i put another one on it. Each Level the Beast climb up it will get stronger and stronger. So, the more time you need, the difficulty the Endfight gets. Too mean? Welcome to the 80`s. That was normal for us. You think you are a tough Gamer? Then don`t let yourself blind from Optic of the Game and take on the Challenge. One thing, if you must stop inside Gaming, the Game will save, so you can later continue, but if you die, no save, end of the Line. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2339244720 DUNGEON OF RIKKA is a simple but addicting Hommage to good old school RPG Games. It is a Time Machine. While playing this i have a big smile on my face because it reminds me of some nice C64 and AMIGA500 Games. Feels Good. Thanks to the Developer taking me on this Journey to the Past. Thgis Year i tested somuch nice Games with a Blast from the Past, that makes this horrible Corona Year better. And DUNGEONS OF RIKKA, no joke,is one of the Best for me. Thank you very, very much. And thank YOU for reading. The graphics are fairly simplistic, but that's not always a bad thing. As I told the dev when they mentioned this game on Reddit, the graphic style reminds me of an old roguelike called Castle of the Winds, so it has that nostalgia feel I love. The gameplay is a little awkward, as you either have to get used to using WAXD instead of the normal WASD, or use the number pad of your keyboard (if you have one). Unless I missed something in the controls, I also feel like this game needs a keyboard-only mode for picking up items, such as F to "open" the inventory on the floor, then for instance G to "take all" or F again for the currently highlighted item only, etc. The difficulty of monsters encountered is just right -- not too easy and not too hard.
Dungeon of Rikka is a ripoff of Rogue/Hack from the early 1980's, but with a Unity based 2D retro pixel/hand drawn art skin slapped on it (as well as a $5 price tag, which shows the developer is not without a rich sense of humour). Gameplay is very similar to NetHack but slightly shallower. While the depth of old school RPGs is lacking in so many games now, rehashing an old, dead format is not the correct way to resurrect it. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. Problematically, the user interface for this game is just a 2D text heavy panel with a few static images... it might as well be a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers. The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. While I understand that's in some ways the point of a "roguelike", when Rogue hit the ancient text displays of last century, there was no competition... gamers didn't have a game with a decent storyline to compare to it. When games with plots came out, they completely blitzed Rogue. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Dungeon of Rikka didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievments, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is just for playing long enough to reach level 5, and only around 17 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game, less than half the players. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. Dungeon of Rikka has an overly optimistic price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. If you really, really want to play Rogue, you can play glHack, which is free and open sourced software, and has better graphics and gameplay than this does.
Super cool little indie RPG game that offers randomized loot, randomized dungeon floor layouts and a unique experience each time you play it. I love that the potion colors and scroll colors and all randomized as well each time you play so you never know what "unidentified" scroll or potion will be exactly until you taste it, drink acid and lose health to discover it and say "OOPS!" lol It's a lot of fun, I admire the hand drawn art style as well. Great little game made from the heart with passion and well worth the asking price!
I like Dungeon of Rikka. I recorded some of my progress in Dungeon of Rikka. Please take a look if you value a more Audio / Visual experience, as I discuss the game as I hack, slash and magic blast my way through it; in some semblance of style perhaps! https://youtu.be/UZS1GgPt9y4 Dungeon of Rikka is an Indie, Traditional Roguelike Dungeon Crawler that feels like a turn based Roguelike take on Diablo! Oh ya!
A Roguelike Take on Diablo?
Like Diablo, Dungeon of Rikka is rocking the Random Dungeon lvls born of Procedural Generation; good. Dungeon of Rikka allows you the increasingly rare honor in RPGs of actually allotting your attribute points at the start, along with allowing you to pick your class, right at the beginning of the adventure. Plus, in Dungeon of Rikka, you can put in a skill point at lvl 1, as you are lvl 1, not lvl 0; thank you! Remember to spend your skill point at the start! Every lvl, you get 5 more attribute points and 1 more skill points, like in Diablo 2; awesome! Equipment slots are the same as in Diablo / Diablo 2 too. Dungeon of Rikka also is rocking the familiar and excellent grid inventory of the old, yet still great Diablo games, focusing on volume, as opposed to tracking weight as some other dungeon crawlers. Equipped items are shown on the character as well; unexpected and nice!
The Dangerous Dungeon World:
You start in town; you can rest at the inn to restore health and energy, but it is pricy. There is an enchantress in town that can enchant your gear for gold if you wish. Then, you pick your dungeon: you can pick either the cave or the crypt; to eventually unlock the main dungeon while the big bad is busting out. So, time is a factor here, as you are alerted as the Big Baddy slowly busts their way out, dungeon layer by dungeon layer, ascending towards the town to destroy it. All while you attempt to descend down the side dungeons to become strong enough and get the keys to unlock the main dungeon in time; intense! Managing and regaining your HP in Dungeon of Rikka is very important, as you do not heal normally in the dungeon, you must use potions, scrolls, or the lucky well to regain your life. Resting in the dangerous dungeon only restores your energy, useful for using your active use abilities, but does not heal you. While regular attacks do not cost energy, your much more powerful attacks and abilities do, so you will often want to keep your energy up in order to use them to save your hp. The Dungeon of Rikka has hidden traps too; spike traps; poison traps, teleportation traps; you can try to disarm them if you wish for exp, or just avoid them, or even used them. There are wells in the dungeon too; one granted energy on drink, another drink from the same well cursed me for 19 turn, while the last sip gave me more energy, another well gave me a permanent stat boost! Wells are good! There are merchants in the dungeon; you can attack these merchants; but it’s best not to; as they’re really strong, but if you do, they drop their stuff; tempting… Unidentified scrolls and potions are present as well; beware! There are 1 way pits you can dive down if you dare, and no damage on using a pit to descend, very generous! You can light wall braziers in the dungeon for exp; fun and immersive! When you kill all monsters on a floor, all lights are auto lighted, and you get the exp; a nice feature!
Dungeon Combat:
Walk into enemies to melee attack them. Hotbar abilities cost energy, and have cooldowns. You can skip a turn by pressing “X” for rest, restoring energy, but not health. Many monsters you find in groups, like groups of giant spiders or rats; this makes the little monsters much more threatening; good. You can magic enemies around corners as long as they are in range if you know where they are; handy. Remember: Energy does not recover by default; you have to rest to get it back. You completely restores your hp and energy when you lvl; very generous! Drinking potions and using scrolls costs no action / time; very generous. Can swap items at no cost in combat Arrows are not tracked; so assume you character has a bunch, and pulls em them out of pincushioned enemies; ok. While I did enjoy my time with Dungeon of Rikka, I did come across some areas where it could be better. Please let me know if anyone thinks I’m off base here, or if any of this is out of line. I’ll try and keep this organized. Tech Issues: / Minor Asks
1: Minor Bug: Seems to be a limit to the amount of stuff you can loot in a square, vs. what can be dropped there by killed enemies.
Removing some stuff caused the items to display and become lootable.
2: The Nameless One…
Cannot name your character; odd…
3: Teleport Too Slow!
The teleport animation is way too slow; it must be faster! Bigger Suggestions:
4: An Ability to Throw Potions!
This provides both a use for the flaming and acid potions, as well as allowing a fun way to test them. Take that midboss!
5: Dungeons Don’t Feel Lived In :(
Where are the monster nests? The camp sites for the wayward adventures? The doors? An absence of doors here removes the means of blocking or locking doors, both for resting in the dungeon more safely, as well as barricading / blocking doors with spikes / pitons to slow monsters down. Maybe much fewer doors in the Caves, but some in the Crypts could fit, even if they are steel grate doors, or there is a portcullis present that monsters and you can shoot, fire and poke through. That would feel much more interesting.
6: Stupid, Stupid Monsters!
Some enemies should be able to follow you up stairs; at least the smarter ones the humanoids. It is a bit silly that other adventurers refuse to follow the beaten up mage they just were pounding down a moment ago, only to let them rest up and come down and blast them away. They’re adventurers too! They know this trick!
7: Friend or Foe?
Please add a red outline around hostiles, or some other means of clearly communicating to the player that this entity views them with ill intent. As I was killing humanoid adventurers for a while, when a merchant popped up, I took a shot at him, as they all look so similar! It led to my death. :(
8: Inspection Needed!
An ability to inspect enemies to see if they are at less than 50% hp would be very helpful here. To better identify and reinforce to that player that yes, your attacks are making an impact and at some point, that you are visually damaging your foe. This is important for player motivation, to keep them engaged in the battle, and reduce the odds they just give up. Anyway, my hopefully helpful suggestions aside, I enjoyed my time with Dungeon of Rikka. Dungeon of Rikka is a fun traditional Roguelike Dungeon Crawler with a strong Diablo influence, and is well worth a wishlist and a watch. Watch?
Fun and addictive game .. just one more turn / try. Sometimes a bit frustrating when you make a mistake, dies and you need to start over as a new nobody (and make some tweeaks to your setup to hopfully do better)
An affordable roguelike with some cool mechanics. I'm just reviewing for visibility. :) Will update eventually!
Was kill by a snake. 10/10
Simple and good at what It does, nice to pass time, the only complaint I have is the loud and repetitive step sound and the graphics are very unpleasant, but I understand that some people like this type of graphics.
