Cheap Fun But A Little Dull.

Gameplay Info

Platform: Steam/PC Viewing: 4k fullscreen Language: English Audio: N/A

TL;DR
"Dungeon Core Master" is an average H VN that lacks depth or long term replay value. It is short, with okay art, a story felt like it had some real promise, and some basic dialogue. There is no voice acting. Overall it is completely average and if you can pick it up for under a couple bucks it might be enjoyable.
Rating
65/100 Maybe give it a try.
The good:
- Cheap. The price being under 3$ made it easy to buy. - Story. There is a negative for story too, but it was worth mentioning as a positive. The story really setup a world that I started to get invested in. It felt like there was a lead up that could have gone many directions. - Art is pretty good. Nothing awe inspiring or noteworthy, but its nice. Not fancy and not elaborate. Simple and likeable. - English version was pretty good. I did not see any blatant grammar errors or syntax issues. Made for a nice read where no extra thought was required. - No observable network connections made during game play. When playing ecchi or H games like this, I like to watch my network traffic and see if the game is attempting to connect to the internet. No observed connections with this one!
The bad:
- Short. It is really short. Full play through in less than an hour. After the way the story seemed to be building I got my hopes up. Lots of potential. - No VA. It is easier to get invested with a good VA to uplift what would otherwise be an average or underwhelming story. - Story is good but choked out by short game play. This was my biggest letdown. Unlike other titles I've tried thus far, this one had a story I felt could have gone much further and deeper. Despite being so short, I felt there was a lot of promise here, but it just got cut short. Not just a little it was quite abrupt. The 'H' scenes felt rushed and placed awkwardly in a story that had more promise. - Dialogue didn't seem to matter. Like a previous game I tried from this developer, there are lots of dialogue choices, but they don't seem to matter or adjust the flow of the game. They just let you play out a fantasy without impact.
Summary:
Dungeon Core Master is pretty average in just about every way. The characters were pretty nice, art and cgs were okay. The biggest pro was also the biggest negative. A story that felt like it could have gone places, had a premise that I could get invested in, and could have been more. Unfortunately it was cut short. If I could give it a sideways or neutral review I would. I'll give it a thumbs up as it was cheap (under 3$) and hope we see more from this story in the future.

short and bad
Dungeon Core Master is a small-scale indie narrative game developed and published by artoonu that places its entire focus on branching storytelling rather than mechanical complexity. Framed as a fantasy-themed visual novel, the game positions the player as a central figure whose choices directly influence the direction, tone, and conclusion of the story. Rather than attempting to blend action systems, management mechanics, or traditional dungeon gameplay into the experience, it commits fully to decision-making, dialogue, and narrative variation as its primary form of interaction. The core structure of the game revolves around reading story segments and making frequent choices that alter how events unfold. These decisions range from dialogue responses to larger narrative forks that determine alliances, outcomes, and eventual endings. The game is designed with replayability in mind, offering a large number of branching paths that can lead to significantly different conclusions depending on how consistently the player commits to certain choices. This structure encourages experimentation, as seeing one ending often reveals only a fraction of the overall narrative possibilities. Tonally, Dungeon Core Master embraces mature fantasy themes and presents them without subtlety, clearly aiming at an adult audience. These elements are woven directly into the story rather than treated as optional side content, shaping both character interactions and narrative stakes. For players comfortable with this focus, the game functions as an interactive piece of adult-oriented fiction where player agency determines how relationships evolve and how the broader fantasy scenario resolves. For others, this emphasis may limit its appeal, as the adult content often takes precedence over deeper worldbuilding or long-form character development. Visually, the presentation follows familiar visual novel conventions. Static backgrounds and character illustrations are used to convey scenes and emotions, with limited animation and a clean interface designed to keep attention on the text and choices. The art style is consistent and readable, though not especially elaborate, reflecting the game’s modest scope. Audio design plays a supporting role, with background music and sound effects providing atmosphere without becoming a central feature of the experience. One of the game’s defining characteristics is its brevity. Individual playthroughs can be completed quickly, especially once players become familiar with the structure and begin skipping previously read text. This short runtime works in tandem with the branching narrative design, making it easy to replay the game multiple times to explore alternate outcomes without a significant time commitment. However, this also means that players expecting a lengthy or deeply layered story may find the experience lighter than anticipated. Narratively, the writing focuses on immediacy and choice impact rather than subtle buildup. Story beats tend to arrive quickly, and consequences are often felt within the same playthrough rather than over an extended arc. This approach keeps pacing brisk and ensures that decisions feel meaningful, but it can also result in characters and settings feeling underdeveloped compared to longer visual novels that spend more time establishing context and emotional depth. Community reception reflects the game’s niche positioning. Players who approach Dungeon Core Master as a short, replayable adult visual novel tend to appreciate the number of choices and endings available, while those seeking stronger writing, longer narratives, or more complex systems often express disappointment. The experience largely succeeds or fails based on whether the player’s expectations align with its scope and design goals. Ultimately, Dungeon Core Master is a focused interactive story that prioritizes branching narrative paths and replayability over mechanical depth or production scale. It is best suited for players who enjoy experimenting with choices, exploring multiple endings, and engaging with adult-themed fantasy storytelling in a compact format. While it lacks the polish, length, and narrative richness of larger visual novels, it delivers a clear and intentional experience within its niche, offering a concise example of choice-driven interactive fiction built around replay rather than endurance.
