Driftwood takes the DIY approach to physics with the board and wheel system and excels for it. The board selection affects your steering sensitivity and the wheel determines your maximum grip. This is basically a tuning system but the effects are very pronounced and easy to digest. Combine this with a solid underlying physics model that communicates slides and the sense of grip very well and you get a game where both style (points) and grip (time) disciplines feel equally valued, approachable, and present a high skill ceiling. The rarity of this cannot be understated. The challenges are a good difficulty, and the leaderboard system is presented in a way that encouraged me to fight for positions when I usually don't do this in other games. I'm a little sad that all is left for me is leaderboard chasing and daily challenges. It's a big ask but I hope a map editor is down the line, I think it would really give the game legs.
super cool jeu
Driftwood is a chill game with a generally awesome vibe, though it's not without its flaws. There's a real contrast between what it gets right and where it falls short. The music fits the atmosphere well, but it becomes repetitive after a few hours (at least it did for me). The maps are great, and there's even custom-modeled bollards for each country the maps are set in (iykyk). So it's frustrating that many maps have gaps between the road and ground textures that you can clip through. How do you have time to correctly model regional bollards but miss something like that? That said, I still think you should give this game a shot. The challenges mean you'll replay each level a few times, but they never feel too difficult. It also stays fresh thanks to multiple routes per level, and the steering feels great and responsive. Finishing the game took me around 6 hours, and you'll most likely have all achievements by then. There's not much reason to replay afterwards, maybe just a run or two with a friend. For the future, I'd love to see more levels added (for free no paid DLCs), a map/level creator, or expanded trick mechanics.
A hidden gem of a smaller good game. the painterly look is really cool and the music is a bop. But the bugs are insane alot of the time costing you many good runs. I also feel like the controls are a little clunky but that might just be me. 7/10
