Until the other day, I hadn't played any Touhou photography games since Shoot the Bullet way back before this came out. After trying this game on a whim amid my very large Touhou collection, I remembered the magic. If you're looking for an entry point as a beginner, this is probably not it. It's quite difficult, with no difficulty selection. But if you're experienced or just looking for a grind, this is a phenomenal game.
Same story as StB, so I won't repeat myself. They added angle mechanics to the game, by making the camera rotate AND being able to change between horizontal and vertical view. This add more nuance to survival, but also scoring (with the angle multiplier). Hatate also adds a lot more nuance to the game by having her own gameplay style alongside Aya. Overall an expanded version of StB, with even tougher patterns and deeper mechanics, without losing what made the first game incredibly fun. Also if you aren't aware Hatate is absolutely unhinged. She eats salamanders!

It's pretty good Didn't have as much fun in this one as in Shoot The Bullet due to having to complete each stage twice. There are also couple of spellcards that are too much dependent on luck with just throwing bullets randomly without any patter and hoping there is a path between them for the player, but other than that it's still very solid danmaku photo game. The option to rotate camera view is very welcome addition music is as usual very good and doesn't get tiresome. Overall I would still recommend STB over this one but if you already played that one and want more this should be right up your alley.

I've played the majority of the official Touhou shoot 'em up games, and this one may well be my favourite. Double Spoiler, expanding on its predecessor Shoot the Bullet (which I'm also kind of reviewing here as they're very similar), is a bit of a departure from the series's standard bullet hell gameplay. Instead of playing through longer levels involving stage enemies and a boss, in Double Spoiler each individual attack pattern (typically spell cards) is its own short level. This means progress can be made incrementally, unlike in the mainstream Touhou titles where you are expected to familiarise yourself with the entire run of levels and become consistent across them. This makes it easier to play in small chunks over an extended time, something I enjoy. Of course, the corollary of this is that the spellcards can get extremely individually challenging. I am not very good at bullet hell games, so this may not be reflective of your experience, but in the most difficult cases it took me close to 1000 tries to beat some of these levels. This game does not serve as a good entry point to the genre, so if you're inexperienced you may want to try a different game (if you're looking to get into Touhou Project specifically then Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom is a good starting point). As for the gameplay itself, I find the photography mechanic extremely fun. Taking photos of bullet patterns in order to defeat the enemy is a very clever idea considering danmaku are designed to be beautiful in the first place, and the way its used in the (admittedly bare-bones) narrative is something I enjoy a lot. Also, speaking of bullet patterns, the danmaku in this game is sooooo creative and pretty I love it so much. So many good ideas in this game (and StB), even by the standard of Touhou games. Overall, I'd highly recommend this game, although it should be noted that if frustratingly difficult mechanical challenges for their own sake don't appeal to you then you're unlikely to enjoy it. Also, it might be wise to start with StB before DS, as it is the direct predecessor and slightly easier so you might build up some skills there first (though it's still hard to be clear!!). DS does expand on some mechanics and introduce a second character but overall they play very similarly. And, if you take away nothing else from this review, remember: the pen is mightier than the water
