I liked it when I was a kid, but it didn't age well. I like the horror though.

ES HELMOZO
I never got the opportunity to play base Doom 3 or its expansion around its release, nor did I play the BFG Edition around its release. Much later, I played Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission from BFG Edition back to back. Playing Doom 3 was an enjoyable, but rather different experience compared to Doom or Doom II. The darkness and the lack of an integrated flashlight forces you to have a careful and slow approach to progression, since you can either have the flashlight or a weapon in your hand but not both (unlike the BFG Edition). Most enemies spawn out of thin air and it is frustrating initially, but you get used to it. Also the frequent jump scares/ambushes immediately after opening a door can be maddening as well. The re-imaginings of the Doom/Doom II monsters are nice for the most part, except the Pinky is not very recognizable. The game gets better around and after the Hell level as the story and action ramps up. The hellish atmosphere really takes hold of the environment and briefly even the mind of the space marine. The weapons are OK for the most part. The shotgun is maybe a little weak, but the chain gun makes up for this for being very memorable. The Soul Cube is a nice addition to the weaponry. The essence of Doom 3 is to be constantly on alert for what might lie in the darkness or what thing might spawn behind you. I recommend the original Doom 3 over the BFG Edition, since the lack of lighting and the terror of darkness is a core gameplay element. When the BFG Edition introduced the option of a permanent flashlight, it took away some of the fear and angst you feel when progressing.

An absolute masterpiece. Some people hate it, but to me it has to be one of my all time favorites games.
