About

Don't Get Your Hopes Up is a short interactive comic about housing shortage and horror in architecture.
Based on desperate apartment searches undertaken in 2022 and 2024, and drawing from a half decade of conversations about Amsterdam's housing crisis, the game moves between fiction, documentary, and social commentary.
With disquiet and creeping unease, it dismantles the consoling fictions of abundance, and laments a feeling of home that's always just beyond reach.
Playtime: 40-60 minutes. Dive into a week of apartment hunting through the eyes of Krish and Yan, a couple looking to find an apartment in Amsterdam. Classic visual novel gameplay meets sparse, parallax comic book illustrations, with a few narrative and mechanical twists.
View odd apartments and make tough decisions on renting and overbidding. Experience a moving story about precarity, solidarity, alienation, and the systems that keep us apart.
Immerse yourself in a haunting, propulsive soundscape featuring music by Simon Frank and a special track by Rotterdam band Neighbours Burning Neighbours.

"EVERYTHING HAS TO CHANGE, FOR ANYTHING TO STAY THE SAME."
Learn a wayward history of contemporary Amsterdam that is resonant globally. Play through a carefully constructed bricolage of references, ideas, speculations, and social commentary about the housing crisis that attempts to distill fleeting perceptions of an ambient present into coherent yet unsettling images.
"State-of-the-art maleficence”, with inspirations from Leila Taylor’s Sick Houses, Joshua Comaroff and Ker-Shing Ong’s Horror in Architecture, and Ayşegül Savaş’ The Anthropologists.

This is a short story that is too much true. It's so true that it's depressing. I wish nobody had to go through this. These people are incredibly strong.
Yeah seems about right

You have to admire how enjoyable this is given the topic (I'm currently somewhat urgently looking for a place to live too, I *wish* my search was as colorful as Yen's). Also, the apartments are the stars of the show, not the landlords, THANK GOD. It's clearly well-made, both the writing and the code! Each apartment is unique and the "gameplay" (big word considering it never stops being a visual novel) reflects it nicely.
Moving a flashlight to see differents parts of the screen isn't a novel concept but it's a really nice addition! Someone had to code that and it makes the game more alive. Small formatting differences like that.
The only downside is that you can't get all achievements in one playthrough, which kinda makes sense, but is also kinda frustrating. Not too bad since it's short and skipping works, but it could have been easier.
There's five apartments. Why can't you get accepted into all five instead of only getting two per playthrough?
This is honestly so insightful and relatable. As a young adult living in the US I completely understand what it's like to be living amidst a housing crisis, but I feel like I learned so much about the situation in Amsterdam from this visual novel. It's very abstract and talks about other local issues, like driving out native species for the sake of money and expansion, as well as other things that honestly don't get enough attention. Plus the vibes are cool and it has a good soundtrack. Overall it's pretty well-rounded, plus it's short and free. If you like games of this genre, give it a try.
Wonderfully weird and unsettling in the best way. Incredibly personal and political, thank you for sharing this insight into the world of the Amsterdam Housing Crisis.
im so glad amsterdam isnt real, but it WOULD be sick if the bathroom as we know it represented the crumbling of gender...
