Dire Vengeance is a heavy metal 2D action platformer with very challenging boss fights, I sometimes had an act-raiser impression, but in the end it can be compared more with stable classics of this genre such as Castlevania with the horror-gore in the middle of bloody and hellish surroundings. Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPsORFgtb3I Players will face many monstrosities and 8 unique bosses, the '8 Generals of damnation'. Throughout this hack & slash journey you will start with an upgradeable sword but there are also 18 extra weapons on top that you can find throughout the game if you watch carefully or by beating the generals. Dire Vengeance also has a great power-up system that rewards players after slaying enemies, a bit like in the game 'Gradius' where you can take the souls of defeated enemies to use their abilities.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? No, but it is a fine time-waster for anyone who likes the genre. It plays fast and satisfying, the visual presentation is good and magic spells and bossfights require a bit of thought during the mayhem. It is a platformer on speed. You play a heroine with a long reaching sword which she can use very skilled (and fast), slicing through weak enemies like pudding while guitar riffs provide the musical background. There is no stamina bar, so you can slash as much as you want. You can also use a magic weapon (only one of the 20 that can be found can be equipped), as long as you still have magical energy (which regenerates over time). Killing enemies and destroying the picturesque environements (hanging corpses, gloomy lightsources) often yields you pickups. The sword can be used fast and has a far reach, so it is not too difficult to defeat your foes, also you can (double, later triple) jump rather far, which makes the platforming a joy. So, with a little bit of training, you slice through the levels quite fast - until you reach the boss at the end, where a little more concentration is necessary. With enough pickups, you can upgrade your heroine's powers, when you die (you start with only one life but quite a few health points) you restart at the last checkpoint (without the upgrades). Game progress is saved when you complete one of the eight stages. Conclusion: Fluid hack and slash platformer - kill scores of foes with your sword or magic spells.
Metroidvania + rocking music/art + plenty of action = True to classic Castlevania style with Dire's own theme and music. Collect gems to power up for various buffs and triple jump. Highly recommended.
Follow our curator for similar games
This game is pretty awesome! It's a lot like classic Castlevania with its platforming, satisfying difficulty and bosses, but it also has a unique Upgrade System and TONS of secrets to distinguish it from classic Castlevania. The art style is also pretty incredible, and the fact that it was made mostly by 2 people is mind boggling. There's a Castlevania style sub weapon system, where you can pick different weapons based on the situation. Depending on the enemy/boss/area you can benefit from using one weapon over another. There are even secret sub weapons in some areas that you can unlock by exploring. They're usually pretty strong with upsides and downsides. It's fun to find them. What sets Dire Vengeance apart is the Upgrade system. The Upgrades adds a decent amount of depth to the gameplay. You get Magical orbs on defeating certain enemies. With those orbs you: You can choose between upgrading your Power (damage), Speed(Movement), Jump (Gives you an Extra Jump), Magic(heals your magic), Life(Auto Heal), and Mana. Strategy comes into play this way: Speed and power require less upgrade materials than Jump so they can be desirable to kill enemies and bosses quickly. However you can sometimes save up for Jump to allow you more strategic movement, and sometimes it can even give you access to certain secrets! It's really well crafted in an intentional way. There are a LOT of levels, and each one has its own unique boss, secret areas, and weapons. A lot are similar to classic Castlevania Bosses where you have to learn the pattern and take advantage of it. There are also secret bosses and minibosses here and there. They can be challenging too, but they always have a fun reward paired with them as well. I know I keep mentioning secrets but there seriously are a lot of them. This game really rewards you for testing things out, giving into your imagination and exploring around. While the stages themselves are linear in progression (Stage 1, Stage 2, etc) they feel more like a Metroidvania at times due to the extensive number of secrets included. Overall I think it's a really good game and totally worth the price. There's a lot of replay value too due to how many secrets there are. Also I cant stress how crazy it is only two people made this. Give it a shot!

Linear, classic Castlevania-inspired arcade action platformer with a heavy metal motif and a Gradius-style power-up system. Challenging, but fair and with plenty of room for experimentation.
Metroid-vania game with a unique upgrade system. Will be punishing if you're not familiar with these sorts of games.
Fantastic classic platformer with a lot of replayability.
Pros

Tight controls. Pandora moves exactly where you want her to and you'll rarely find the controls ever give you a hard time
Sub-weapons are genuinely useful and each one works better in specific stages and levels
Level designs are well thought-out and never get repetitive
Fantastic enemy designs with loads of variety
Unique system to level up abilities that allows for customization and adds a nice risk/reward element to the gameplay.
Secrets to find in each stage
Enjoyable & Diverse Boss Fights
Checkpoints at bosses are a godsend
Level select is a nice addition allowing easy replays for each stage
A solid amount of content from the 90+ achievements and Boss Rush mode.

Neutral

The sub-weapons can be a little too easy to spam. Your mana bar is quite high and although it refills at a slow rate from killing enemies, some stages were very easy to beat just by using my sub-weapons.
The soundtrack's heavy metal feel may appeal to some players, but not everyone. A nice variety in the tracks would have helped further differentiate each stage
There's not much in the way of being able to adjust the difficulty in Dire Vengeance. However, I'm hesitant to call this a negative aspect because, the developers goal in mind was to create a tough platformer inspired by older titles.

Cons

Spikes that instantly kill you if touched are a somewhat archaic obstacle designs
A few technical issues, mainly the game freezing after attempting to select a game mode on the menu screen. This happened to me a total of 4 times during my playthrough.
Stiff enemy animations. Many of the enemies particularly in the first 3 levels have some stiff designs with not much animation to them.
Dire Vengeance absolutely nails what it's trying to accomplish and goes above and beyond its predecessors in many ways. It replicates the entertaining and tough gameplay of older action platformers while introducing some QOL improvements that make it even better. The unique upgrade system is probably going to be what Dire Vengeance is remembered for the most and I think that's a fantastic legacy to leave. In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of games that try to replicate the older NES & SNES feeling, because I didn't grow up then and they have never been my cup of tea. That being said, I'm happy I played Dire Vengeance and I hope true fans of the genre see this review and get to play Dire Vengeance as well. Yes, there are a few issues with the game, it's not perfect, but remember this love letter of a game was developed by 2 people. Halloween is fast approaching so if you want to play a game with tons of monsters & ghouls then give Dire Vengeance a shot.
