Contrary to popular opinion, I'm a big fan of wave shooters. But they have to get the basics right. In my book, SPT is a perfect example of nailing the core mechanics (despite some aggravating bugs), and not much more. Still. it's enough to make me spend countless hours chasing highscores. I could write quite a few paragraphs about where D. Wilde (Steam censors the title lol) drops the ball to various degrees, but there's one single issue that just totally eclipses everything else. You have 1 weapon for an entire level (10 waves). The tactical depth aspect of letting the player change weapons depending on the threat at hand, is absolutely essential to me in a plain wave shooter. I can forgive it in games where locomotion and level geometry plays a role, but not here. Just like with "Blasters of the Universe", the gameplay wears thin way too fast due to this, and achors the verdict in the waters of mediocrity. It's decent fun for a few hours, so if you're a fan of the genre, it's worth checking out on sale. 65%
Context: I'm playing this on a Quest 2 through Oculus Link via a 3rd-party 16' USB-C cable from Amazon. This is a great VR arena shooter! Similar to the light-gun games of yore (Time Crisis, House of the Dead, etc.), enemies pop up in the distance, and it's your job to shoot them before they get to you. Thanks to VR, though, there's a little more to it than that. First of all, you have 2 hands, which will be used either for 2 weapons, a weapon and a shield, or both hands on a single weapon such as a bow. Also, many of the smaller enemies or projectile-based enemies can be dodged if you lean out of the way fast enough, which gives some nice wiggle-room for people who aren't perfectly accurate. It's just complicated enough to be interesting without being overwhelming. The first time you play, you likely won't make it too far, but it won't be long before you're blocking seagull poop with your shield while leaning to dodge swordfish and snipe a gator. The weapons are a lot of fun, and each one has its own strengths/weaknesses (and scoreboard). I'm torn between the shotgun/shield combo (the shotgun switches to a sniper rifle and the shield kills enemies) or the revolvers as to which is my favorite, but they're all fun in their own way. Also, there are various powerups to choose from at the end of each wave. Minigun to shoot enemies, mines to take care of waterborne enemies that get too close, rockets to shoot annoying birds out of the sky, and health to repair damage. They're all useful in different scenarios, and there's a strategy to what order you deploy them in. Games like this are inherently simple, and you probably won't be playing for 6 hours at a time, but they're endlessly fun to pick up and play, and I'm not going to lie, it's a bit of a workout waving your arms all around while leaning back and forth to dodge acid and bird poop. It's bright and colorful, the graphics are beautiful in their simplicity, and it's incredibly easy to jump into while also having enough depth that you can hone your strategy for subsequent runs. Highly recommended. I haven't played the second one yet, but this one is already a lot of fun.
Most realistic Florida Man simulator.
This game seems like it'd be just another cheesy wave shooter, and it kinda is... What sets it apart is the hillbilly/swamp aesthetic and the enemies and attack patterns of those enemies. Also the weapon selection is pretty unique too. For comparison sake I'll use Space Pirate Trainer (SPT) if there's any similarities or differences I feel are worth mentioning. Otherwise this will just be a normal review. Like SPT you fight from a platform that suits the aesthetic. Here you're on some kind of fishing boat (or pier?) with a nearby platform where certain "Assist weapons" will appear. You start out fighting Gators and random fish, and it sorta ramps up from there. I've really only bothered with the Swamp level so far but unlike SPT, there's other levels and other difficulties to try out. Even the first level is kinda challenging until you get used to whatever weapon you've decided to use. So that's another main difference from SPT: You choose a weapon before you start the game and then you are forced to play with that weapon (and whatever alt fire it has) and that's it. No swapping weapons mid game to maybe choose whatever would suit the moment best. This isn't a bad thing per se, it's just another aspect of the challenge. You also don't get a shield with every weapon, so most of the time you're just gonna have to duck incoming projectiles. Thankfully they don't make you dive and roll across the floor to avoid them -- Just duck or move your head a bit to the side and that's enough. So more about those weapons. There's: a pair of pistols... no alt fire for these, but squeezing the grips makes it reload. A bow and arrow (I haven't used this one because I'm kinda sick of Bow and arrow games in VR) A shotgun with shield that does damage to enemies that hit it. The Alt fire is a rifle. A pair of spear guns with alt fire that shoots spinning circular saw blades. Paintball Guns (rapid fire but you have to manage the air pressure level) Nail Guns Grenade/Missile Launcher (with trigger in the other hand to detonate) Are there more? I forget... So you choose your weapon, choose the area and then choose the difficulty level and off you go. Once it loads up, you click the trigger to start and enemies start heading for you. Just like with any game, headshots are crits, and you score more by hitting those. Enemies start at Gators, "Spitter fish", and bonus/score golden carps, and then before long you get electric eels popping out of the water and eventually lunging at you, seagulls and dragonflies that spit/crap on you, swordfish and piranhas, puffer fish that explode for some reason when you shoot them... It's mostly fish/gators and a few flying enemies though. Like SPT, the game saves a separate high score for each weapon, so by all means try them all, but you might want to stick with just one weapon until you actually become proficient with it. Switching back and forth may make it hard for you to get accustomed to how to aim. For example, the paintballs and harpoons all suffer from some bullet drop, the shotgun is worthless at long range (but the alt fire works wonders), and the saw blade alt fire can skip off the surface of the water so you can sorta aim in front of something that's submerged and the blades will bounce up and hit it. Once you finish a wave you get to choose a powerup/assist to help you through the next level. Either you get a chain gun turret that runs out of ammo rather quickly, mines that can persist from level to level until you shoot them or something runs into them, rockets that really only seem to work well on gulls, or you can choose to be healed if you've taken a lot of damage. If you have ammo left over and choose the same assist weapon next level it'll just add to the ammo. I'm not sure if it converts the ammo if you switch weapons. I tend to stay with the same one or else I swap between mines and rockets since the mines stay in the water until they're detonated. You're also rated on each level by how much of the wave you managed to kill: 50% = 1 star, 75% = 2 stars, 90% = 3 stars. You should get something extra for 100% but nope, just manage 90% or higher for a 3 star rating. There's a lot going on so you really have to keep your wits about you and dodge like you mean it, or else you'll find your health low, and your vision blurred as the spit/crap hits your face. Oh and if you see the eel lunge at you, don't let THAT hit or it'll stun you. Gators will also take a huge chunk of your health so there's another reason to attack them before they get too close. All in all, it gets a bit repetitive (but don't all wave shooters?) but the weapon selection helps keep it fresh for a while longer. Still, for being as old a game as it is, it looks decent and it's fun enough. The worst thing about this game is that the difficulty is pretty high. This could help keep it interesting for you if you like a challenge or it could be a turn-off if you're looking to just have some fun.
♥♥♥♥ Wilde - Probably the most redneck VR game out there, but man, did I have a ton of fun with a bunch of friends inviting them over for BBQ and some VR after. Party mode in this game just made it that much more fun, passing the Vr headset and controllers from person to person and trying to beat each other's scores. Once you "get gud", this game is still a challenge keeping you on your toes, but definitely a great game to play. Recommended!
Ein Wave-Shooter, aber dafür ein sehr spaßiger mit ulkigen Waffen und Tieren. Hier ist Dauer-Action angesagt, die gut zur Geltung kommt. VR-Umsetzung ist gut gelungen. Preis grenzwertig aber noch ok. the best game named ♥♥♥♥ wilde you will ever play
The only remarkable thing about this game is that it has the lewdest name of a non-adult game in my library. Early VR was completely overrun by rail shooters and this game wasn't helping the situation. The real problem though is this isn't even a rail shooter but a light gun game; I'm pretty sure someone already had this game built for an arcade then ported it to VR because it's definitely missing something to make it palatable for any audience. Either way, it's just another boring VR shooter that misses the mark and isn't worth playing. If this was designed for arcades, where is the continue system? The difficulty seems scaled around using a light gun and not a VR controller because you need to land consecutive headshots in order to survive the walls of enemies the game throws at you (even on the easiest difficulty). Even with good aim this is difficult because flying enemies only have hitboxes on their bodies (and not their wings) and all weapons use slow projectiles (except for the shotgun). Enemies do different amounts of damage but generally speaking you can only take 3-4 hits before a game over, with the only way to heal by selecting a heal reward at the end of the wave. Even then, this only heals for about half of your health. The end of wave rewards also include three options for support fire, including a proximity mine thrower, an anti-air rocket launcher, and a close-range minigun. The problem with these is you can only have one at a time and your ammo isn't carried over if you decide to switch. There's also no wave number or difficulty scaling for the amount of ammo you get, making them all pretty niche compared to the healing. They should really just have infinite ammo considering the amount of enemies that spawn because the weapons present simply aren't effective without some kind of backup. Wilde's arsenal has some cool ideas, like the the harpoon gun/sawblade combo that feels like it was ripped from Painkiller, but almost all of them feel intentionally underpowered. The nailguns for example have such insane recoil (and unusable spread) on rapid-fire mode that they feel like they're trying to rattle out of your hands. Yet the laser sight mode's rate of fire just isn't fast enough to deal with the number of targets coming at you with how little damage per nail that they do. The only weapon I was able to get to a boss with was the shotgun because it comes with a shield that blocks everything, it's the only hitscan gun, and the secondary firing mode turns it into a rifle. With the amount of birds and fish pooping and spitting on you (which blocks your vision for a good five seconds), this shield is the only way to really survive above easy difficulty since you can only physically dodge so much. There's really no reason to purchase this over the more popular VR shooters available. I wasn't a fan of Space Pirate Trainer but even that was better than this because at least it lets you switch weapons during a run. This is yet another VR game that feels like it was made for arcades and was simply dumped on Steam to generate more sales. Minimal effort games like this make me just want to sell my VR setup already because my VR backlog has been mostly miserable filler like this. Not recommended, don't bother, do not play.
