We have gathered here today not to find comfort, but to share the torment and sing together. So open the red book in front of you to page 666 and let us sing balefully: "I did my time and I want out So effusive, fade, it doesn't cut The soul is not so vibrant The reckoning, the sickening Packaging subversion Pseudo-sacrosanct perversion Go drill your deserts Go dig your graves Then fill your mouth with all the money you will save Sinking in, getting smaller again I'm done, it has begun I'm not the only one And the rain will kill us all We throw ourselves against the wall But no one else can see The preservation of the martyr in me..."
Not sure why this currently has mixed reviews, as I think this is one of the better games in the Survivors/Bullet Heaven genre. Nice visuals, great music, a lot of fun to play.
TLDR; Charming Survivors-like/Hades clone with a lot of good ideas, but most of them fall short. Needs work before being worth your time. Looking at Devil Jam, all the ingredients are there. Hades-style upgrades, interesting story about a band selling their souls to the Devil, unique gameplay, great designs on the Sins (they give you your upgrades), and lots to do with the challenges. But, you can use all the best ingredients and still have your dish come out messy. That's what happened here. Good stuff, the gamplay is unique as hell. You get up to three Sin types for weapons and upgrades, either adding a passive to your one of six empty slots or adding a weapon/buff to your grid. You have a 4x3 grid to fill, buffs often effecting other weapons on the grid. The characters reflect their sins very well and the Devil bounces off your player character in an entertaining way. Speaking of, you can unlock two other characters for a total of three. You can also unlock challenge maps and other maps to play as you advance through the game. And, well, that's all the nice things I found. Time for the criticism. For the builds, I never felt strong. Of the 50+ runs, maybe three or four of them saw me completing the builds to their apex. I'm not sure if it's in the coding, but it was like the game knew what would benefit me and actively tried to prevent me from getting those options. Even if that's not the case, the feeling is discouraging enough to effect the experience. Speaking of feeling, the enemy hit detection feels off. There were times where the mobs would just close the gap way too quickly before hitting me, like they were magneting to my character. The challenges are a nice addition, but they don't effect progression, effectively making the only playable stages the 20 minute ones where you face off with Death. Even then, you'll only be playing one stage if you're a completionist, the Overgrow. You have a mission where you need to kill 5000 imps, an enemy that rarely spawns and in small numbers. You'll get about 300 kills if you're lucky, needing you to grind Overgrow roughly 17 times. And if you're unfortunate enough to be a completionist, like myself, you'll be grinding A LOT. It's mind numbing, if I didn't have my friends in Discord, I would have gone mad grinding these out. So, at the end of this game, what do you get? Nothing. You don't even get a conclusion to the story between the player characters and the Devil. You get your last Steam achievement and the game ends on a wet fart. It's a shame because I think I like this game. Devil Jam is like your girlfailure gamer GF, she's messy, could be hotter if she just took a little care of herself, and kinda stinks, but you can't help but love her. But just like having a girlfailure GF, I think there's something wrong with me for enjoying it as much as I did, most normal people will drop this game quickly. But if Devil Jam can use some of the sales to fix the product, I think there's something special here. It's close, but still has a ways to go.
This game came as a pleasant surprise. A mix between Hades and vampire survivors, two of my favourite games. The visuals and voice acting are on point. Mechanics can be a bit unbalanced, with some slight bugs (eg. suddenly losing a bunch of power on buffs after acquiring a devils deal). However for the price it's a great time filler and quite fun. I hope it continues to get updated and further improves over time.
Fun Survivors game. Feels like a mix of Vampire Survivors with some Hades mixed in built on a music theme.
This game is fun and flawed which is exactly what you'd expect from its pricepoint. Definitely recommend picking it up if you enjoy survivor-likes. There isn't enough content or meaningful variety (builds, enemies, maps) to put in hundreds of hours here, but there's plenty to enjoy for a while. Nicely animated, fully-voiced characters, good music, and a fun energy from start to finish. Runs are relatively short at 20 minutes or so. If the developer gives a bit more player agency when it comes to builds or re-arranging your inventory, the experience would be even better. It's already RNG-heavy enough as it is by simply being a roguelike, but not being able to adjust your grid to get the most out of what you're being offered upon level up feels bad. Not every game needs to be a masterpiece to be fun and worth your time or money. This game is worth your time and money, for sure.

The vibe (survivors game with Hades aesthetic and great rock music) along with a unique build system really appealed to me, and the main gameplay loop is fun for the first maybe 45 minutes... until you realize any power progression is PAINFULLY slow, because they give you no real clues on how you might organize a build. So you go to the forums, and of course some people give some guides on what you probably want to do, but I've never had to do that in a survivors game before. So 2 hours in, I am not even close to being able to clear a boss. Purchasable stat upgrades give no feeling of progression. It's just boring. Well, no amount of cool music or mechanics is going to get those two hours back. Great idea, poor balance. I'll come back and try again in a year and see if they've improved it, but as it is now, I cannot recommend this game.
I am really enjoying the game so far. It is fun and exciting, has good music and awesome artwork. It offers many hours of entertainment for a fair price.
