Reviews
fast-paced, top-down retro-style arcade shooter where you pilot a spaceship, shoot at hordes of enemies and collect power-ups whilst dodging missiles and bosses ✅Fast, dynamic pace, plenty of shooting, explosions and chaos ✅The game features loads of weapon bonuses, bombs, rockets, extra lives, etc. ✅Great nostalgia (I played a very similar game on the console at CJ’s house in GTA San Andreas XD) ✅18 levels ✅The price is good ✅It gets harder from level to level; there are more enemies and they shoot faster ✅Wide variety of enemies ❌If you die, all your bonuses are lost
If you'd like to see more of my reviews, you can find them on my curator page: CuratorKingViking and on my group: GroupKingViking If you have any questions about my reviews, feel free to ask. DemonStar - Original Missions, developed and published by Scott Host, is a meticulous revival of a classic PC shoot ’em up that understands exactly why the original resonated so strongly with players in the late 1990s. Rather than reimagining its identity or layering on unnecessary modern systems, this release focuses on preservation, polish, and accessibility, delivering the original campaign in a form that feels both authentic and refreshed. It is a game built around precision, pattern recognition, and relentless forward momentum, and it proudly embraces the fundamentals of the vertical shooter genre. At its core, DemonStar is a traditional top-down vertical scrolling shooter where players pilot a lone starfighter against overwhelming alien forces. The screen scrolls upward at a steady pace, demanding constant movement, quick reactions, and careful positioning as enemies flood in from every direction. Waves are structured to teach patterns and punish complacency, while mid-stage encounters and screen-filling bosses push players to manage space intelligently. The gameplay loop is simple—shoot, dodge, collect power-ups—but the execution is tight enough that every mistake feels earned and every success satisfying. One of the most impressive aspects of DemonStar - Original Missions is how it bridges generations of players. The game offers multiple presentation modes that cater to different tastes without compromising the core experience. Legacy Mode preserves the original visual style and soundtrack, capturing the exact feel of the classic release with crisp responsiveness that honors its roots. Enhanced Mode, by contrast, introduces modern visual effects, smoother animations, and an updated soundtrack, making the experience feel cleaner and more fluid on contemporary displays. Switching between these modes highlights how strong the underlying design is, as the gameplay remains compelling regardless of presentation. Level design across the campaign shows a strong understanding of pacing and escalation. Early stages ease players into movement and weapon mechanics, while later levels demand mastery of positioning and threat prioritization. Enemy placement is deliberate, often forcing players to choose between aggressive power-up collection and safe maneuvering. Boss encounters are a particular highlight, featuring distinct attack patterns and multi-phase designs that feel intimidating without becoming unfair. These battles test pattern recognition more than raw reflexes, reinforcing the genre’s emphasis on learning through repetition. Power-up systems are straightforward but effective. Weapons grow stronger through sustained collection, rewarding players who can stay alive and maintain momentum. Losing power after taking damage creates meaningful tension, as recovery becomes a secondary objective alongside survival. This risk-reward structure encourages confident play while still punishing recklessness, keeping the difficulty curve engaging without becoming overwhelming. Modern quality-of-life improvements elevate the experience without diluting its retro identity. Performance is smooth and consistent, supporting higher frame rates and modern resolutions that make movement and bullet patterns easier to read. Optional display modes, including vertical orientation support, show a clear respect for genre enthusiasts who prefer arcade-accurate setups. Local cooperative play adds another layer of enjoyment, allowing two players to tackle the campaign together and turning already chaotic battles into exhilarating shared challenges. Audio design plays a surprisingly important role in reinforcing the game’s momentum. Whether using the classic soundtrack or the updated score, the music drives the action forward with an energetic rhythm that complements the constant motion on screen. Sound effects are crisp and punchy, providing immediate feedback for hits, power-ups, and enemy destruction. Together, these elements help maintain immersion even during the most intense encounters. While DemonStar - Original Missions does not attempt to reinvent the vertical shooter genre, it doesn’t need to. Its strength lies in clarity of purpose and execution. It understands that the appeal of classic shooters comes from clean mechanics, consistent rules, and the satisfaction of improvement through practice. The absence of bloated systems or excessive customization keeps the focus squarely on skill, reflexes, and pattern mastery. Ultimately, DemonStar - Original Missions stands as both a preservation of gaming history and a genuinely enjoyable action game in the present. For players who grew up with PC shareware shooters, it offers a faithful return to a formative experience, polished just enough to feel comfortable on modern hardware. For newcomers, it serves as an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of vertical shoot ’em ups, demonstrating why the genre remains relevant decades later. By respecting its origins while embracing thoughtful modern enhancements, DemonStar proves that great arcade design is timeless. Rating: 8/10
