What makes a game truly *delicious*? A sweet story, lovable characters, and engaging gameplay. Luckily, Delicious - Cooking and Romance provides all of these and more! As the series approaches close to twenty titles, with roughly half being available on Steam, the storytelling and game design remain consistent with the previous installments and offer as satisfying an experience as ever. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3081292302 In this chapter, Emily has her hands full managing her multiple successful restaurants, and in addition, a rom-com movie is to be filmed in town. At the same time, for both her sister Angela and her teenage daughter, love is in the air. The story will have us experience not only Angela’s new romance blooming after a break-up, but also the thrills of first dating for young Paige. The Delicious titles are casual time-management games in which customers walk up to the counter or sit at a table, order food and drinks, and it’s up to you to prepare and deliver those before they lose patience. The staple mechanic of being able to upgrade ingredients and dishes is present here too: each ingredient has an alternate form that provides a small bonus, which is unlocked after completing a certain amount of orders for that item. As you complete levels on your choice of three difficulty levels, you are rewarded with progression towards decorating Emily’s personal kitchen area in various ways. This is a separate cosmetic scene with no effect on gameplay, but for which you can buy and customize various furniture items or cooking accessories. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3081293837 There are no requirements to have previously played the other games from the series to understand the plot and the characters, although knowing their background could potentially increase the immersion. Delicious - Cooking and Romance serves as a standalone story and those who would like more insight into the characters and their relationships can consult a special section of the game that shows a short introduction for each of them. Like other recent SQRT3 games, Delicious - Cooking and Romance is full of pop-culture references, and the writing tries very hard to fit in as many contemporary slang words as possible, such as “FUTAB” (“feet up take a break”), “no cap”, “boo up”. If you feel you can’t understand how kids speak these days, this might just help! To obtain all the achievements, you will need to finish all the levels with three stars (but playing on easy is fine). Unlocking all upgraded dishes requires replaying a few, but replaying levels is necessary anyway due to the rather tedious requirement of replaying already-completed levels 100 times. Most of the other achievements unlock naturally as you progress through the story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3081297350 With 90 levels and addictive gameplay, Delicious - Cooking and Romance is bound to keep you busy for around 12 hours, plus some extra if you want to obtain 100% achievements. The humor-sprinkled, heartwarming story is on par with the other installments in the series, and IMHO the game is worth buying not only for those that have a FOMO on good time management titles but also for new players to the genre because of its casual, uncomplicated gameplay that helps everyone FUTAB. LMK if you think the same, and… DFTBA! I really wanted to like this game, but I can’t. I grew up with the Delicious games and played every one of them, some multiple times. What I liked about the previous games was that every restaurant had its own unique recipes and items (except for Delicious 1 and its winter edition from 2006). The games are timeless. Emily’s Cooking and Romance feels like a complete different game. In Emily’s Miracle of Life, Moms vs Dads and Road Trip the looks of the game where different than the previous ones, and Emily and Patrick didn’t ‘feel’ the same like in the previous games. But I still liked the gameplay. This game however feels rushed. There are some menu-items that are the same in different restaurants and that are literally copied from previous games. There are two restaurants that are almost the same (Emily’s Place), but one is the 'love' variant. These ones and another one (funtime land) are also just copied from previous games but maybe adjusted a bit to make it seem ‘new’. Also some of the music of the game was the same as in previous games. The graphics also seem slower. This wouldn’t be so much of an issue if the story was really good. But even there this one fails me. The intro alone made me question the game; the family is sitting on a couch looking at an I-pad/mobile screen, scrolling through pictures in which Emily, Paige and Grace wear a face mask… Why put that in a game like this? It’s unnecessary and doesn’t make it as timeless as the other games. In game, the story was more about Emily’s sister Angela and Emily’s daughter Paige than about Emily. I was curious about how it would end. But at the end this also felt rushed. It gave me a feeling of ‘wait, was that it?’ This, together with an achievement that you have to replay levels 100 times… just no. I hate to say it, but you have lost a Delicious fan with this one. I’ll stick with the older games.
i haven't played the entire thing yet, but for now i unfortunately will give a negative review. this game feels somehow older than the ones that came before it, in a bad way. animations feel slower/less smooth, and the NPCs look worse imo. i don't really understand the tweaking of the designs with nearly every game. the ''speech'' bubbles that appear when preparing food that has multiple steps sometimes blocks you from picking up food behind it, making you have to wait. that gets annoying sometimes. i don't like the added minigames very much, i'd prefer if they weren't a thing. as a Delicious enjoyer (i have all the games, even the ones not on steam*) i would say buy a different one first, if you want to try the franchise. *PS: why not add some of the even older ones to steam? like, from childhood memories and up maybe? edit after full playthrough: i WILL say the story gets very funny near the end imo
I am still working on this one, but I don't hate this one, not one bit. It gets a little frustrating at times and can get grindy if you're trying to get everything. Note: Some of the achievements are triggering even though I got the "first" part of it, so please keep that in mind. Other times it won't trigger until you've done it a few times. The story is a bit...silly to me, but I still like it. Instead of upgrading your store you buy "items" that help select things. I.E A tray so she can hold more items for that section of map, move faster, ect. I can recommend it at it's sale price (17.99$ USD) but I think it'd be worth the 19.99$ at normal price too.
I can forgive the weird story time skip between this installment and the last. I can forgive this weird need to fix something that wasn’t broken in an effort to modernize the series. I can forgive how the characters are now animated like puppets on strings, how the mix of sound effects and animation make it so the gameplay doesn’t feel satisfying the way it used to. What I CAN’T forgive is the truly, truly awful writing for Paige and her friends. Without exaggerating, every sentence, one of characters is dropping in some random youth slang like bet, goals, no cap, cringe, bae, etc. I legitimately can’t tell if this is a parody or if the writers truly think kids talk like that. It’s like the writers looked up a list of Gen Z slang and wrote the script without bothering to listen to HOW KIDS ACTUALLY TALK. (Because of course the kids are saying “I want us to boo up” instead of “Will you go out with me?”) It’s jarring, it’s unnatural, and (to borrow a word from the list) it’s cringey as all hell. And because the story focuses so much on Paige, it’s unavoidable. I really want to like this game and be open-minded about this new direction, but with half of the cutscenes focusing on Paige and her friends, playing through the game feels like nails on chalkboard.

My favorite type of time management games are those where you complete orders and GameHouse has great games in that genre. There is a continuous story through most of the game, but they do it in such a way that you can hop in at every game. I'm more familiar with Angela, Emily's sister, but I know Emily from one previous Delicious game I played and she played a role in the Angela games and also in the games that are in the hospital. It is awesome to see familiar characters and also see Angela's story make some progression through a different game, but as mentioned you can hop on at any point without missing the clues and understanding the dilemmas. GameHouse games feel like a soap series, in a very good way. The story starts a bit weird and unbelievable, but I always get invested in the story at one point and want to see where they go with the story and how it will end. I have no idea how they always do this, but it is great. I would already play the games for the game mechanics as it is just a lot of fun to complete orders, finish bonus objectives, and find the hidden mouse in each level, but a good story makes it even better. Another great thing about this game is that it has no missable achievements. You can replay the levels to finish a missed bonus objective or to get that star you missed. And the level overviews clearly show you where you're missing something. I would recommend going back and doing them while you didn't move on to the next area as at that point you still remember where every item in the level can be found. So what kind of achievements does Delicious - Cooking and Romance have? They are kinda for completing everything. Getting 3 stars on each level, doing the bonus objective on each level, finding the mouse in each level that is hidden, and pop-ups every now and then (a sound will tell you when it pops up). There are also achievements for upgrading every item in all the levels and buying upgrades. You also have to watch every cutscene but there is a menu that will show you which one you missed if you did miss any and you can watch it from there. For me, the most boring and horrible achievements in this game were the amount of replays of levels needed for 3 achievements. In earlier games, this was like 10 or maybe even 25 replays, which was already so long in my opinion. However, this game lets you replay 100 levels for an achievement. You'll have to replay because you missed something in a level, or can't upgrade an item yet, but that are only a few replays. 100 Replays is more than double the game. As the main game has 60 levels + like 4/5 bonus level every 10 levels. So around 90 levels or so in total. And don't get me wrong, you don't have to replay every level, you can just replay 1 level over and over, but it is so much. I enjoyed Delicious - Cooking and Romance a lot and loved the story. However, at this moment, I wouldn't recommend hunting down all the achievements so that the game stays fun and does not get ruined by the grind that is needed for those last 3 achievements.
Note: A copy of this game was gifted to me by an awesome friend. ^^ Delicious - Cooking and Romance is a time management game developed by SQRT3 and GameHouse and published by GameHouse. It is the latest installment in the Delicious series. (I believe it is the 9th game on Steam although there are earlier Delicious games.) Some years have passed since we last saw Emily, Patrick and the kids in Delicious - Moms vs Dads, and upon first starting up the game, we get to witness what has happened to our lovable family. Emily is still the successful owner of Emily's Place along with Napoli's, a family-themed Italian restaurant. Meanwhile, Patrick now runs an automobile repair shop. Finally, Paige is now in junior high, while the twins Emmy and Vito are now in elementary school. Emily and her family are all going about their business when Francois, Emily's best friend, notices a couple of strangers acting suspiciously in Snuggford. Thinking that these strangers are planning on opening their own restaurant and drive Emily's restaurant business into bankruptcy, Francois confronts them. However, it turns out that the strangers are in town because they're thinking of filming a movie in Snuggford, but they're on the fence. Of course, there are the usual other antics going on, with a cute love drama involving Paige and Angela going through her own love woes. However, I'll end my synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. XD As for the gameplay, you can choose from among the usual three difficulty levels: easy, normal, or advanced/expert. (For review purposes, I played this game on normal mode.) There are a total of 60 story levels along with 30 bonus levels. In each level, Emily has to serve customers in a timely manner as well as clean up after them (if they choose to dine in). Depending on how quickly Emily can do so, you can earn up to 3 stars per level. Also, there's an additional task where you can earn diamonds, and of course, Carl the mouse returns, where finding him earns you diamonds, too. In addition, there are plenty of various mini-games, such as making latte art and folding up pizza boxes. Thus, in each level, you can earn diamonds as well as coins (depending on your score). Coins are used to purchase restaurant upgrades as well as to customize Emily's restaurant (once items are unlocked), while diamonds are used to unlock items in Emily's restaurant. There are plenty of Steam achievements/in-game trophies. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. I've been a major fan of the Delicious series for a long time now (really, ever since the first game came out years ago), and as the series was on a hiatus, it made me wonder if we would ever get another game. Thankfully, the devs have presented us with Delicious - Cooking and Romance. It was great to see Emily and Patrick again, along with Paige, Emmy, and Vito. While Emily looks the same as always (I guess she has that eternal youth vibe going on. lol), everyone else looks appropriately aged up. It's wonderful to see how everyone is doing, and of course, we get a new adventure. Emily's family and pretty much, everyone in Snuggford are really excited at the prospect of a movie being made in town. However, no venture goes off without a hitch. Problems and antics occur, and it's up to Emily, our hero, to save the day, which she does. Emily is still that cooking genius who's savvy with running the restaurant business, and she knows how to resolve major problems. As I mentioned earlier, there are other antics going on. For example, Paige's best friend has a crush on a boy, and Paige wants to help her find a way to get them together. Thus, she enlists Francois' help. Then, there's Angela, who is now helping Emily with her restaurant business. I have to admit that this part made me a bit sad since I really wanted
to see Angela as a successful fashion designer and maybe married to the love of her life
. Still, there's plenty going on, and all of the stories get resolved. As for the gameplay, it's just as fun as in the previous installments. The levels are all doable to complete with 3 stars, along with completing additional objectives. All the Steam achievements unlocked for me as well. If I have to voice a complaint, though, I'm not a fan of the replay levels achievements. There's a specific achievement for replaying levels 100 times, and that one can be extremely tedious and tiresome. Of course, you can choose to skip obtaining certain achievements, but if you want to get 100% achievement completion, there's not much choice but to endure these annoying ones. Suffice it to say that it is impossible to obtain all of the achievements on one playthrough. In regards to the art, I like that the style is the same as ever. It has that cartoony, colorful style that I expect from games published by GameHouse. The sprites and backgrounds are well drawn and colored. As for the music, the tracks feel familiar to other tracks from previous installments, but I don't think this is a negative. The tracks are appropriately placed, like the Italian theme for Napoli's. There are a couple of new tracks, too, which is a welcome change. Overall, would I recommend Delicious - Cooking and Romance? Before I give my final opinion, I do want to comment about the price point. Compared to the previous installments, this game is about twice as much. Now, that made me wonder as to why, and after completing the game and obtaining all of the achievements, I think I know. The replay levels achievements do take some grinding and hours to complete. If those achievements hadn't been present, my total gameplay time probably would have been closer to 10 hours. However, because of those particular achievements, it ended up being closer to 18 hours. I feel like this padding is unnecessary, and I would have personally preferred to have the usual price point but no padding. Anyway, I would say that if you enjoy time management games and especially enjoy the ones in the Delicious series, then this is worth getting. However, I would recommend holding off for a sale, especially since this is currently not bundled at the time of this review. I would have held off on getting this myself, if an awesome friend hadn't gifted me a copy. Still, I do hope that we get more Delicious games in the series. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
I love these games, they're so cute, chill, and relaxing. Some of the dialogue is cringe but the play is very satisfying.
SQRT3 really out here saving the time management genre and even giving us a new Delicious game. You cannot picture how happy I was to see this pop up and then playing it, seeing it's still as enjoyable as ever, wholesome in story and characters. It's actually kinda challenging meaning you will need upgrades to 3-star everything but for fans of the genre it's an absolute gem!
