Introduction
The following review should be taken as that of an opinion and as such any comments made herein are that of myself alone. Deidthraw is a singleplayer endless shooter that has been solely developed by one person since it's inception. With that in mind I want to write this review for those who are considering purchasing and want to learn a little bit more about the game before committing to purchasing. I should note that at the price point that it is being marketed as, the game posseses significantly more charm than I have seen from other titles that have the backing of both large groups of developers and budget.
Gameplay
Immediately once you enter the world of Deidthraw, you are immediately exposed to the different features and intricacies each level attempt brings. The game feels fluid with movement and particularly jumping and crouching mechanics being responsive and fun to manoeuvrer around the trailing horde of enemies. Each weapon that you encounter or purchase has its own distinct charm and custom-made sound effects that overall contribute to a level of polish and charm that leaves you wanting to try out each weapon. Present within the game as it stands currently is a comprehensive upgrade system that allows you to select upgrades based on character level and weapon experience gained in the current play-through attempt. What this means is that each attempt remains unique and allows the exploration of different playstyles and "builds" that keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting.
Graphics
Each texture and asset included within Deidthraw is of a high-quality and leads to the level feeling immersive and atmospheric. Ambient lighting is incredibly impressive thanks to the use of CPU based Ray-Tracing that allows for the creation of fantastic lighting even for those that do not possess the relevant NVIDEA GPUs. This obviously must come at a cost to performance and I suggest those that are planning on purchasing to read the relevant recommend specifications before picking up the game. For myself running on an RTX 3080 I enjoy a constant 120 frames-per-second when altering the graphics settings accordingly.
Difficulty and Gameplay Considerations
As discussed gameplay is fluid and the presence of a skills based system promotes further playing through the need to try and experience different build archetypes. Deidthraw is a difficult game as it was envisioned and therefore multiple attempts are required to really get the full experience the developed intended. The presence of multipliers and upgrades however make the game fair despite such a steep-learning curve. For those that have played similar endless-shooters before Deidthraw will provide a new challenge that brings back memories of original titles such as that of the original Killing Floor etc...
Future Outlook
Deidthraw was and continues to be a sole developer project. As such the amount of continued work that can be provided depends fully upon the success of the game in the current and future states. I can state for a fact that the developer has a fantastic roadmap of features to be added that I wholeheartedly believe will make it into the final release. These include upgrades to the playable characters, weapons and more. I think for the price that is being charged, Deidthraw is a fantastic title that really provides something new that is not commonly seen in the industry of late. I recommend all that read this to pick it up for yourself and see how far you can survive !
Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Is there anything good in this game?
The game is working so you can play it. You have a gun and you can buy more guns and more ammo to shoot skeletons and there are options to get a currency that will let you to improve your stats forever and also you can improve your stats for a current level when you level up. And well there is also magic in this game. I got a spell called deidsomething that was more powerful then any weapons I had and made it super easy to play by just throwing ammo at enemies and destroying whole groups of enemies every second.
Well there is plenty of bad things in it.
The first strange thing I noticed is that the Polish language option has letters from Polish alphabet that are unique to our alphabet missing and even when I did change the game language to English the game was still using Polish language in settings tab. Another strange thing was that when I started the game it was already set to minimal graphic settings and all the sound effects in the menu were turned down to 0 so I had to change all the settings just so I could play the game the way it was intended to look and sound and run. And even when I change my keys settings some of them reset back and some of them even are completely removed and now have no keyboard key assigned to an action like interact etc. and I have to set them again when I play the level. It is also strange how just having that game lunched and opened on menu screen makes it use 1GB of ram and 10% of CPU but 100% of GPU. I would have to dig deeper to see if that is just because of bad game source and bad codding or is there some king of cryptocurrency mining program running in the background when we run the game. And it is strange because the graphic effects are not really anything great or groundbreaking – just some basic assets. If I set graphic on max I see what I saw in much better games where I did put the graphic on low/medium but the GPU goes to crazy temperatures and still sits at 100% usage. But I think to be able to put a cryptocurrency mining program inside the game you have to have some skills and by how the game looks and works I would guess it is more because of incompetent developer. I sadly don’t have time now to dig deep to see if there is any cryptocurrency mining program inside the game. I can’t be 100% sure that it is just bad source code and game codding and incompetency and not a malicious program trying to dig some crypto but I did not see anything suspicious in task manager while the game was on. No matter the graphic settings you will set the game will use 100% of GPU at all times and that is strange. Probably just badly coded game engine is at fault here. The funny thing is the game even pretend that it has 2 levels but these are the same levels – just the second one has snow outside and some Christmas lights in the pub making it easier to see everything in the game while the first level is all about being dark. While most of the assets used in the pub exists as a solid objects some of them don’t and you can just walk thru middle of them like they are not there and skeletons can walk thru middle of them also. There are even places where if you stand skeletons don’t know how to reach you so they just walk in circles or from one spawn point to the other or they get stuck thinking you are in a space between two floors so they stand behind the wall close to you and your special holy aura kills them every few seconds. The skeletons pathfinding makes them even more stupid then the worst zombies you can find in games and other media. I found 5 places where you can just stand and shoot all the skeletons moving past you without problems as they will not attack you in any way. This game is like many other games where you fight against waves of enemies but worse in every possible way imaginable. Like even completely free games where you fight against hordes of enemies are better than this game. Even leveling up is broken as choices you get are just a random number generator of a few things that you can improve so you get to choose from 3 options and they will have from +2,5% to +75% increase for that stat making you always pick the highest % and not really care what you pick or think about it as there is no point of planing any build with % that jump from useless unnoticeable increase to a game winner increase randomly. The most funny thing is there is a bunch of positive fake reviews on the store page made by probably developer alt accounts or his friends as all these accounts only reviewed this one game and of course they reviewed it positively while many of the accounts are showing that they have been 10+ years on Steam – some of them were public only for a while when they posted review to change to a private mode later. Still many of these accounts have 50+ free games and this game and these accounts are mostly used to play CS:GO and sell skins. One of the account was just freshly created and got only this game and post a positive review and that was all the activity on that account for days. It looks like all the accounts posting positive review for this game are his friends from UK. It is also funny how these reviews were created after 0.2-0.3 hour of gameplay. Thankfully Steam did let me to flag them as false and they will check these reviews and accounts.
Conclusion
This game is not worth your time or money. There are better games where you can shoot at horde of enemies. Overall score 1.5/10
A surprisingly addictive game that had kept me hooked for well over an hour in one sitting. The user interface is slick and easy to navigate. Love the dark and spooky atmosphere. Those skeletons casually chilling at the tables tricked me good a couple of times haha. The graphics are really decent for an indie game, the details in the environment are impressive and I like the wide variety of weapons too. The inclusion of a snow map gave the game a seasonal charm as well. For this price the game delivered a solid gaming experience so far!
Despite not being someone who often plays this form of game, this one will stay in the library. My lack of skill is evident due to minimal practice, however, that does not impact my enjoyability. In the short time that I played, I encountered monsters and a final boss, with the game increasing in difficulty. This kept it engaging and encouraged me to continue. Not only is the game thrilling, but it integrates a slight Scottish feel which is not often seen in games and is much appreciated. This is a game that my laptop sometimes struggles with, causing a slight lag, but that does not affect my recommendation. Great game from a new developer!
This game is not something i usually play. However, this was worth the buy because of the fast paced shooting that keeps you engaged in the action. The upgrade process is fairly simple as far as i have seen and the rounds get harder if you manage to make it. There is also a boss that you fight after a certain amount of rounds but I personally am not very good at shooters so it is slightly difficult for me but i am sure that whoever is reading this is better than i am. There is no story line in this game but i do not mind as it is quite clear that it is not that type of game. Currently i have not found any obvious bugs or issues, the game did load slowly and lag when first opened but after lowering the graphics settings it was good to go (My computer is also quite old). The Christmas update is also very nice, the detail is amazing. On a side note, some people who prefer the daytime version ( as the game normally cycles through daytime and nighttime randomly ) may find it useful to play on the Christmas mode as it is always bright. On a final note, this game is fantastic for an early access game and a solo developer. I am excited to see future updates and features in years to come.
Pretty good
A thoroughly addictive game and never has lasting 5 minutes in a game brought such a sense of achievement. It certainly is challenging. Each game something new is learned about how to survive, where the keys could be, where the safe spot is to take a breather ( and where not to go!) - all help the strategy for the next game. Upgrades are essential, get points or crowns and use the various machines to get weapons or other artefacts ( not quite sure what they are for yet ). Can also upgrade the character from the main menu to give a starting boost. The skeleton hordes get progressively harder to deal with so getting upgrades are essential. The exploding skeletons that eventually appear are quite annoying and not quite worked out best strategy to deal with them - especially as the pulse weapon, which usually helps give you cover, sets off ones that are creeping up behind you. Overall graphics are fantastic, the weapons are very detailed, as is the map - small but extremely authentic. The two locations offer something slightly different - I am mainly playing the Christmas location as it is generally brighter for my ageing eyes and loving the Christmas hats. So much still to discover and want to get to the big boss just to say that I survived the 20 minutes. Did not expect this quality for this price.
A CoD-Zombies like with a celshaded-esque artstyle, which shows some real promise. Only downside is the performance, owing to the fully raytraced lighting which cannot be turned off - this is by the developer's choice, as they claim they cannot otherwise replicate their chosen visual style. This is fixable using Lossless Scaling's frame generation mode, however.
