DEEP SPACE is a permadeath platformer that uses procedural generation for a high-score gameplay; I hesitate to call it a traditional roguelite, even though it has some of its elements. The game supports leaderboards, but you will have to grind the upgrades before you have a fair chance, it only takes about 1 hour to do so. Otherwise, it is a fun game despite not being particularly original. Your run can end very suddenly do to combination of enemy effects, which is a good thing because it keeps the player on the edge. There are several different weapons although I find that balancing could be a little better; the default weapon feels somewhat superior because you don't need many bullets to kill an enemy. You can also increase some passive stats such as health or shield duration. I find it odd that game keeps the upgrades, not something that you would expect in a high-score format. Having a direct power progression gives you advantage over a new player, I probably would prefer a luck based system that would reset upon death, that way every run would be different (like picking between 3 upgrades every few stages). You would have a hard time competing without unlocking the health upgrades for example. The movement feels tight but the game does not have a full controller support. I thought the pixel art and music were just decent for the price.
Pros:
+ tight gameplay and challenging difficulty + nice variety of enemies with unique powers + several weapons and upgrades + decent pixel art and music + supports leaderboards
Cons:
- you can't rebind controls - not enough variety for more than few hours - I think the high-score system and upgrades could have been handled better Final Thoughts 6/10 It is a decent roguelite(ish) platformer for the price as long as you not expecting something original. If you like grinding high-scores you might enjoy it for a couple of hours; I am looking forward to giving it another 100 attempts or so. Fun but pretty average. Early enemy can disrupt the control of your character, and the other avoid your attacks. After Zone 40+, the majority of opponents and obstacle can 1 hit-KO your character even if your character is full-upgraded. This game difficulty scale is increased by power, not from 1➝2➝3➝4➝5 but 1➝4➝9➝16➝25. Unless you're Hardcore gamer, Acv. Hunter, or Collector/Generous (for less than 1$), don't even bother to buy this game. This isnt a negative review per se, but more of a neutral. You shoot stuff, collect coins, die, use coins to upgrade stuff, and do it all over again. And over. And over. Its fun at first, but after upgrading my health, shield, and two guns to the max, i felt like the game hit a wall and it stopped being fun. Plus, there's some stuff that i feel could use some improvements. -Every time you shoot the screen shakes just a little bit. -I wish the camera would just move left to right and *not* move up and down. -Cant remap buttons- On a controller you shoot with R trigger and jump with A. Would rather shoot with X. -Upgrades (besides health) dont really feel like a huge upgrade from the last, as well as maxed out. -There are some things that pop up from the ground but theres nothing to signify where they are. -Theres an enemy that once you kill it, it explodes green sticky goo. You have to jump three times quickly to get out of it, but in later levels its so chaotic you'll most likely jump into another enemy and take damage. -If an human type enemy comes at me it seems like its programmed to jump over the first bullet i shoot. Every. Single. Time. -Toward the later levels there's just so much crap on screen at once its extremely difficult to see what is going on.
I bought this game in a bundle with 10 other games for $1.50, so I wasn't expecting much. I ended up being surprised at how good this game was, and I'm excited to check out some of the company's future releases. I had a couple of hours of fun with this game, and the difficulty gets pretty hard in the later levels. Unfortunately the game just had too many issues for me to recommend it. To start, the controls are okay, but the could be better. It's more the game design doesn't take the controls, and their limitations, into account. You'll end up spending a bit more time than is fun jumping in the air trying to shoot the bullet at the exact time you need to in order to hit an enemy on the ceiling. Secondly the power-up system doesn't really work as it is. You collect money as you play the game that you can spend on leveling up guns, buying new guns, and getting a bigger life bar and those carry on into future play throughs. So far, so good. Except you don't get to start the level with the guns you bought. Buying a gun just means you might find it somewhere in the level. Say you spend a ton of money leveling up a gun. There's no guarantee that gun will even show up on next run, or your next several runs. That's not the worst part though. The worst part is there's no way to switch guns. There are about half a dozen guns available, in addition to the default starting gun, and you can only use one at a time. When you pick up the next gun powerup, even if you have ammo left, you switch over to the new gun. You can't even put the gun away and use your default gun to save it for later, Once you pick up a gun powerup your only options are to continue to shoot that gun until it runs out of ammo, or pick up a different gun powerup. And it's a shame, because in addition to having some really cool and fun gun designs, some of the guns were obviously meant to be better in certain situations. For instance the bubble gun works really well against exploding enemies since it floats them away, where every other gun will make them explode. Too bad I can't use it only when I need it, and it pretty much comes down to dumb luck if I end up with the right gun for the situation. It's even worse because sometimes the default gun is preferable to some of the special guns in certain situations. A couple guns fire really slow, meaning you'll probably get damaged if you have several enemies rushing you at once. The default gun is fast enough for that situation, but your only option is to keep firing the slow gun you have until it runs out of ammo, and take some hits in the process. The other issue with the guns is they're mostly wasted on the level design. The level designs are mostly tunnels, and there are only a handful of different enemies and traps. While the guns do some cool things, most of those things aren't stuff that often comes in handy in a tunnel. Speaking of level design, I know it's procedurally generated, but it's often not done well. Too often you end up in a situation where you have to take some damage or even die because the level was impssible to get through otherwise. One other thing, that is just one of the most BS enemy AI things I've ever seen, some of the zombies have the ability to jump dodge bullets. Pretty much they will always jump dodge unless you hit them right as they're jumping up to get over a ledge, or you fire a second shot right after they've jump dodged. That would suck in any game, but it's so much worse in this one because of how the guns work. You have limited ammo on the special guns, very limited when they're low level, and you'll end up wasting a bullet on the zombie dodge just so you can hit him. If it's a slow gun and the zombies too close, you're pretty much going to have to take a hit because you won't be able to get off two shots in time. Anyways, despite the many issues I had with the game, I'd still think it's okay, and definitely worth what I paid for it. I mostly buy these cheap bundles hoping to find a hidden gem or an indie company that's worth watching, and I at least got the later with this game. If you can get this game in a bundle of for $.50 give it a try, but even $.99 seems like a bit too much for this game.
i don't like it,looks like one of that games that you can create for FREE online by google "Create 2D games online",there is no storytelling,no planets to explore ecc. You walk in a tunneL,grab goins, shoot little quantity of enemies, jump (or double jump) for avoid traps and buy some weapons. My Gameplay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQwdJZLUoGI
ENG: You can't call this game a full-fledged platformer, it's rather an endless runner with obstacles. No matter that you don't have to run here but passing it quietly so not to fall for the trap, while shooting off in deft opponents. In the game there are procedural generation of levels, but it didn't bring diversity. We just go to a certain point, lose all lives, improve weapons and the number of lives, start all over again. And so until you get bored. From my own experience I can say that I was enough for a little less than an hour. Opponents and traps don't change, so the goal is only in the maximum improving and the desire to go as far as possible. And the farther we pass the more coins we will get, which can be spent on improving weapons. A vicious circle is obtained. Gameplay: 5 Graphics: 5 Sound and Music: 5 Interface and management: 6 Novelty: 6 Rating: 5 Verdict - an unremarkable game that is hardly worth your attention.
This would be a decent browser or free mobile game perhaps, but at this price I simply can't find it worth it. It's a very simple "runner" game with basic upgrades. You run, collect coins, buy an upgrade, repeat forever. From what I played it seems like you'll pretty much see all of the game in about 5 minutes. Again, not a _bad game_, but not just worth any money to me.
You can click on your character and drag him through the levels, clipping through everything.
