About

Welcome to Debt City.
10 Days to Pay. Unlimited Ways to Play.
A retro open world life sim RPG. Explore an open world sandbox city, and do anything you can to pay off a debt to a mob boss.
Will you turn to a life of crime, or play as a normal citizen? The choice is yours.
Debt City is a retro sandbox life sim. After things go horribly wrong on an island vacation, you find yourself indebted to one of the most powerful and notorious crime bosses in the seedy Debt City. Given just 10 days to pay off your debt of $10,000, you'll be given the choice: how do you attempt to repay that debt? Will you stay on the straight and narrow and work different jobs to make a living? How about stocking shelves at a convenience store? Or maybe you can be a school janitor? But if that line of work isn't exciting enough.. You can enter the criminal underworld of Debt City. Take assassination contracts to make citizens disappear, no questions asked. Craft and sell specialty (and highly illegal) substances on the black-market. Or maybe you'll become the monster hunter the city needs after a crazed doctor's failed invention goes haywire. But the best part of Debt City? You can do it all. Or none of it. That choice is up to you.
Debt City is all about freedom. With a limited story and a sandbox world to explore, you are able to live your virtual life. Well, at least for 10 days. Each day in Debt City consists of a limited number of actions you can take. Go over those actions, and you will find yourself passing out and ending up in the hospital. With a large medical bill as well, definitely a setback for someone in your situation. Debt City is also about choice. You'll choose from two different characters to play as, you'll choose your apartment style, and you'll also choose your difficulty level. So those number of actions can grow or lessen depending on how hard you'd like the journey to be. And if you die, you'll start over and get to do it all again. But maybe differently this time?
Aside from taking jobs and teetering between being a criminal or doing the right thing, you can also just live your virtual life. Play a minigame on your retro game console in your apartment. Go to the casino and try to win big in your quest to pay off your debt. Go for drinks at the bar. Or just travel back to the island and have a nice vacation. Just remember, you've got 10 days to pay. And there are 4 possible endings to discover.
The 10 day time frame makes the game strategic if you want it to be. But it's not a stressful game. I definitely want a chill vibe. Multiple endings allow you to play forever. And days only advance via certain actions you do in each in-game day. You can play it exactly the way you as the player chose to.
The tone of the game is dark and mature, after all Debt City is a dangerous place. But there is also humor and different easter eggs to discover throughout. From tongue-in-cheek newspaper headlines, to a crime family that dresses up in football uniforms to conduct their business, to playing a minigame with... Santa Claus? There is a mix of seriousness and adult themes with some humorous elements.
A truly open world modern city game. A sandbox life sim. Debt City has the retro graphics and vibes of an old school game, with jazzy blues, rock, and contemporary music to set the mood. The goal of the game is to explore the city and work to pay off your debt, but how you do that is up to you. I didn't want to limit the player. You can be a criminal. You can be a hard working civilian. Or maybe you're a mix of both.
At the start of the game you can choose which character you will play as, which apartment color scheme you'd prefer, and your difficulty level. You'll also get to name your character.

Debt City? More like Regret City. 💸😂 Cool concept: 10 days to pay off a mob debt however you want, crime, jobs, or chaos. But gameplay vs. price of the game? I’d rather owe the mob. 6/10, fun but overpriced. 🕰️💀 Would benefit from a different game engine. I would like to recommend this game but just feels like far too little content so far for a 10$ price point. 2-5$ feels much more fair for this to me. It looks really nice and exploring the city and the ways to make money were enjoyable but there didn't seem like enough to pour more than a couple hours into this game. I didn't expect a massive game but the way it was advertised made it seem like there would be a lot more meaningful choices in the options available. In reality it seemed like no matter what route you took it would be 1 action point = 100$. I expected much more risk vs reward which would make the choice of choosing a criminal route or normal job much more interesting. There are also some quality of life changes I would love to see, like being able to change controls. Being locked into arrow key controls and not being able to switch to wasd makes it so annoying for me. An overworld map would also be a very nice addition, although that would make the game even shorter by cutting down exploration. I also think having achievements or some kind of 100% checklist would make going around and doing all the different jobs feel more rewarding for some people, but I see no achievements for this game. Last thing is the bus sound was so piercing and annoying it honestly made fast travel feel not worth it to me. To sum it up, if you want a fun little simplistic retro town experience for a couple hours this delivers but dont expect anything more.

I was part of the kickstarter campaign. I dont know what i was expecting. The art style is neat, but pretty boiler plate 8 bit, with some nice world detail. The ideas are there but the game play is super basic and you can play it through in 1-2 hours. Its begging for secrets and more story and a lot of blocked areas to be opened. There could be so much more, but i get the feeling the creator is jumping to the next project. I havent played the other games they have released, but from the reviews it looks like the games could use a good round of community feedback before launching to the next project. This is a good candidate for some expansion and using the early access to add some real layers to it. I am not shaming the creators by any mean, quiet the contrary. great job making a functioning game with no bugs on my quick play through! hats off to you! Now jump back onto the streets of Debt city and add some depth and side quests and unlockables and make this cute little adventure with a swearing santa claus something a bit deeper and flushed out. its could be something way more than it is now. I see that they have made several games in the last few years. Perhaps instead of 5 games, focus on a single titile for that time, really build it out, and see what happens?
I recently completed the game in ~2-2.5 hours and I was a Kickstarter backer. I overall liked the game concept, and it was fun exploring the game. But here are my notes/recommendations: 1. I felt like I didn’t have a reason to change my strategy much after the first 3-4 days, making the later stages of the game and making it become repetitive. 2. I would love to have reasons to come back to the game and play again but there isn’t enough random events or alternate play styles that I was interested in for my personal replay-ability. 3. My favourite sections were helping Santa, making different drugs to sell and being able to assassinate people. 4. I would have liked to have seen my choices and actions impact the game ending. 5. I wanted the ability to steal items within the world rather than only being able to open the treasure boxes. I wanted the fantasy of being able to steal whatever I wanted (and for there to be a consequence if I got caught) 6. The warzone area you can mine in didn’t feel at all dangerous, this felt like a disconnect, if I can die when trying to assassinate someone, why couldn’t I be at risk of dying in the warzone area? 7. The price of the game for the number of hours spent to complete was a bit high, for this price range I would like at minimum 5-6 hours to complete the 10 days and or to replay and try lots of different methods. 8. Another factor in not wanting to replay the game was the lack of steam achievements or other challenge modes. I would still recommend this game as when playing at first release I encountered no bugs, I enjoyed the novel game concept.

fun and good game
Backed it on KS. The game is atrious. Terrible sound, gameplay that looks like its made by some teenager on his parent's computers. This is the first game I support on KS, that if I could request my KS pledge back I would.
