I had a lot of fun playing this vn! It's a whodunit set on a campus for magical girls (the best setting) where you play as Sidney, a student thrust into a situation where you must solve a murder case. There are five other characters in the game, which helps keep the story nice and focused. Of these five, there are two pairs of friends (with an odd character then left out) that tend to stick together and spend a lot of time with one another. There is still lots of interplay between both pairs, but a lot of the interactions between Sidney and the other characters are internally within these pairs. I really liked the contrast this creates as you play around with the game choosing different routes and seeing how the story unfolds from the different perspectives of these characters. This game begs to be played through to each of the many endings (even the ones where you
get turned into a crystal statue
or
get trapped in Wonderland
). Each playthrough offers you new insights into the events that have transpired as well as the motivations and personalities of the various characters (whom I should remind you, are all murder suspects!). By the time you reach the conclusion of the journey, having played through all the endings and learning everything that you can, you'll realize just how much your own understanding and perception has changed since the very beginning. It's definitely not the outcome you would have expected when you began the game! Do check this one out!
I honestly did not expect this game to be as good as it was, but it really surprised me! It is evidently clear Quill Game Studios really took the time to put together a thoughtful story with nuanced and imperfect characters. The story isn't as simple as it seems, and you have several opportunities to work through this game and understand each character's motivations and personality. Who will you get close to? Who will you side with? Who will betray you? There are a whopping 13 different endings, and I highly recommend getting through them all as it gives you the best overview of the cast. Don't worry though, the skip button will be your best friend, so you won't have to revisit any scenes. You may want to grab a pen and paper though to track what paths you've been down on. What impressed me the most about this game is that every character is flawed and every character has likeable traits. The more time you spend with someone, the more you get to know their struggles, but also their redeeming qualities. Even the protagonist has likeable and unlikeable qualities - she's more than an empty vessel like you'll see in other visual novels. The art style can be a bit jarring sometimes, but you get used to it really quickly... except for the eyes. Just don't look at the eyes and you'll be fine. If you're a fan of the visual novel genre, then I highly recommend this game. If you're inexperienced or a newcomer, then this is still a great introduction. The murder mystery aspect of the game really pushes you to find the truth, and you quickly find yourself engrossed to explore this world. Note: An awesome friend gifted me a copy of this game. ^^ Death Becomes You is a yuri, mystery visual novel developed by Quill Game Studios and published by Quill Game Studios and Quill Yuri. You take on the role of Sidney (whose name can be changed), a first year student at a magical university. Sidney has been estranged from Lyra, her former mentor and closest friend, due to some rumors, and she wants to rectify it, wanting to meet up with Lyra to talk things out. Lyra agrees, but when Sidney arrives at the scene, she is shocked to witness Lyra being killed. Unable to stop it, Sidney can only stand there in shock, but soon after, four female students arrive at the scene, and Daniella, a third-year student and mentor, accuses Sidney of murdering Lyra. Of course, Sidney vehemently denies this, and as she finds it highly suspicious that these four students, who seem to have conflicting feelings towards Lyra to the point that they may have had motive, Sidney vows to find Lyra's murderer. That's the basic story premise, so I'll end my synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. XD As for the gameplay, it primarily consists of choices. Once Sidney starts her investigation, questions will occasionally pop up as to whom she should investigate, the top suspects being the four students. As to the choices, they are Daniella, Apolline (a third year student and substitute mentor), Alice (a second year student specializing in elemental magic), and Sophie ( a second year student specializing in psychokinesis). Early choices determine which one of two routes that Sidney will go on - Daniella and Apolline's or Sophie and Alice's. Choices after that determine whether Sidney will get a bad ending or the true ending, which is basically the good ending in which Sidney finds out
the truth about Lyra
. There are a few CGs present as well as a varied soundtrack and bonus art and a scene. Bonus art is unlocked once you get one true ending, and the bonus scene is unlocked once you get both true endings. The true endings involve
Alice and Sophie vs. Apolline and Daniella
. There are lots of Steam achievements although they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited". Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. As it's probably no surprise by now, I do enjoy a good murder mystery, and Death Becomes You delivers on that, plus it takes place in a magical setting. Starting off with the story, I like Sidney, the main character. She can come off as a bit of a clean slate, but she's definitely passionate when it comes to her friendship with Lyra, wanting to defend her, despite the rumors about her. She's a strong person with some emotional vulnerability, the latter especially becoming apparent during the true routes. As for the other characters, they each have their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. It's apparent that Daniella and Sophie are more of the hard-working, studious characters who supported Lyra, while Apolline and Alice are more laid-back and are glad that Lyra is gone. Although it isn't that obvious, Daniella and Apolline are a couple, while Sophie and Alice are, too. Thus, there is a bit of yuri romance although the story is mostly a murder mystery and Sidney can't be romantically paired with anyone. Anyway, I like how the story, especially the investigation, progresses, and there are plenty of bad endings. When Sidney does get on one of the true routes, I like how it's revealed that
Lyra isn't this saint that Sidney thought she was and that this isn't a simple murder case
. As for the writing, I thought that the pacing was fine. I only noticed one grammatical error, where there was an extra "the" in one of the sentences. (Of course, I'm nitpicking. XD) However, I enjoyed the story overall and definitely the conclusions in the true routes along with their respective epilogues. In regards to the art, I found it to be beautiful. I like how well drawn and colored the sprites and backgrounds are, and of course, the CGs are especially done well. The only minor thing that I noticed was that in one of the CGs, during the true route, Sidney's hair color looks way different from her sprite. Not sure if this is the result of magic since I know that a magic user's hair color can change if certain spells are used, but I thought I'd point it out. Regarding the music, I enjoyed listening to the various tracks. They vary from the more light-hearted, carefree tone to the mysterious, magical one. The tracks feel very appropriately placed in their respective scenes and fit well with the story. Overall, would I recommend Death Becomes You? If you are a visual novel fan, are looking for an enjoyable murder mystery, and don't mind the lack of romance (I'd say it leans more on the minimum side), then this is worth taking a look. I enjoyed the story very much, especially getting to the true endings. For the asking price, I'd say that it's worth it although you can wait to get it on sale, and it's in a Steam bundle. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
I really enjoyed this game! So much so that I ended up getting all of the CGs, backgrounds, and 11/13 of the endings. The story, the world that it's about, and the characters that inhabit it are all really interesting. After my first play-through I found myself wanting to play the other routes in order to find out more details about Lyra and the mystery around her. I also really enjoyed the game's art and the UI. I'd definitely recommend this game if you're looking for a mystery visual novel that takes place in a world filled with magic.
A really nice game. The intriguing mystery kept me going and it was surprisingly darker than I imagined. I beat the whole game and got all the endings. I'm quite excited for the next games of Quill Game Studios. Many players might pick their favorite girl, but definetly the main character, Sidney, was the one to catch my eye -- and my heart.
A fun mystery to unravel, lots of ways to die, and a colorful and charming cast. Good gayme!
I've been enjoying reading through this so far, its got a pretty good story to it and the designs of the backdrops and characters are all well done.
Sophie best, you can't beat a short hair glasses girl <3
Might be a tad short depending on reading speed and what route you're on, but its got a pretty good story as I mentioned and
i believe like 13 different endings. I have 5 so far as of writing
so you definitely have the replay value there. You can also name your character which was nice as well. definitely recommended! Quill game studios did a fantastic job! video review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hoj8baqd54
I am currently aiming for a complete playthrough with all endings before I write an extended review for another outlet. It's an intriguing tale that dances in that moral grey area, at least that's where I'm at right now.
I really enjoyed this a lot. It's a nice little mystery with interesting characters and good endings. Really liked how more of the story unravelled with each one.
A very great game! It got me more and more hooked as I progressed through the story. It's a murder mystery that focus on the relationship of the characters and you can keep discovering their depths and how different they are. The routes have distinct vibes allowing me to get attached to each character's personalities while also showing the different sides of Lyra, and how strong her presence is for better of for worse. It deals with magic in a interesting way, in a dark tone that shows the multiple possibilities and the dangers of magic in thsi world. Sidney is also a good main character as her dynamic with Lyra is a very clear contrast with everyone else's, and her arc through the routes makes for a satisfying conclusion at the true end. Plus all of the endings keep adding more layers to better comprehend the whole story so it feels worth to hunt for each one. I also really like how the UI is displayed, it makes easier to know at what point in the story is each save, and the indicator of "last save" is also very helpful. The character design and the CGs are very cute, my only wish is that it had more CGs with each character. I had lots of fun with the game, definitely would recommend!
