About

you got yourself an apartment, and secured a temp data entry job- just to keep you afloat till something better comes along. YOUR OFFICIAL TITLE IS A DATA CONVERSION OPERATOR, but you're really more like a warm body who types up all the junk computers still can't read.

you go to work & process the images displayed on your terminal, and type up whatever random text is in front of you. Whatever can be made out, that is.
Sometimes the mail you receive is a little strange- letters and lost mail, some mangled and twisted, that have travelled from place to place with nowhere else to go.
Sometimes, it feels like it's talking to you directly through the screen...

USE YOUR KEYBOARD to type in various prompts, and attempt to decipher damaged images
MULTIPLE ENDINGS & buried secrets to uncover
NO TWO PLAYTHROUGHS are exactly the same (Estimated playtime: 120min per run)
A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF MAIL to voyeur through, and catch glimpses into other lives
ATMOSPHERIC HORROR MOOD with rich sound designed to crawl under your skin
Key re-binding is available, but a keyboard with Function Keys and Control Keys (Insert, Page Up/Page Down) is strongly recommended.

What started out as interesting manipulations of the system and clever scares turned into a stacking of particularly tedious busywork and eyestraining screen filters. By the end of my 2 and a half hours I didn't care to see the ending, this game burned through my good will and interest so fast.
I can see why this is loved. I really can! But if you have sight issues, like issues with flickering, focusing etc or joint issues in your fingers, then I would say perhaps don't get this game. I managed one playthrough but i had to give it to my boyfriend in the end because it set off my joint issue in my fingers and I ended up in pain. I wish there was a warning for this, but here I am as someone telling you just in case you have this issue. I wont be doing another playthrough, I can't. I would have to have someone else typing for me. The only reason I got the ending I did (withdrawn i think??) was because I couldn't type anymore so failed some timed events, and during this period you can't pause or exit the game, so I just let it ran. So it doesn't even feel like I earned an ending to the game. SO yeah, just a heads up.
I've played a lot of horror games and this is definitely in my top 5. Incredible restraint on the part of the developer, who understands the banal horror of wage labor under capitalism. There's a lot of times this game could have taken a cheap shot for an easy scare but instead it lets the player stew in oppressive atmosphere. I also really appreciate the way the dev prevents the player from learning the "rules" of the game. Highly recommend!
Dead Letter Dept. is an interesting concept and a very creepy game with typing as the core gameplay element. It takes copious inspiration from the PS2 Silent Hill games (4: The Room in particular) in the art style, music and introspective story. It builds atmosphere gradually through developing a story of loneliness and isolation. I have to say the game is decent overall, but lacks cohesion in the story and presentation to be truly good. There is just enough material to make you speculate about the meaning of the story, but it doesn't really invite too much reflection or discussion, as there isn't that much lore in it. In fact, as the core gameplay involves deciphering and typing out the poor handwriting on envelopes and postcards, often with distortions, grain or visual glitches obscuring the words, the game is often a slog. The lore and mystery should be the main driving force for overcoming the tedium, but I found it merely superficial and lacking any real ideas. One of the game's strongest points is the disturbing choice of images and text on some of the postcards. The game has an "immersion gimmick" that just doesn't work, namely the restriction of saving once per playthrough and only loading that save once. To be honest, I almost made Dead Letter Dept. my first Steam refund after it made me start over (I honestly didn't take the game's note on the save system seriously and forgot about it - then after saving wanted to check whether I had gotten some mail). Once I decided to give the game another shot instead of returning it to sender, I put off playing for a while until I was positively sure I could finish it in one sitting (this meant missing opportunities to play it along the way, because I wasn't completely sure I should start it). I think there's no reason for the gimmick: it is an annoyance rather than a challenge or a focus enhancement. Overall, I think it's slightly overenthusiastically rated on Steam for what it is. Expect a creepy typing game with some hidden mysteries and possibilities, but not much flesh.
not super scary but very intense. enjoyed! 7/10
Seriously spooky for me for some reason, and rather relatable. Best enjoyed tired out of your mind.
Hard recommend.
Highly recommended, one of the most Silent Hill inspired titles, mysterious story, tests your typing skills. For anyone who loves horror mysteries this is a banger. One of the weirdest games played since last 5 years at least.
idk seems like a regular office job to me
