About
Dead ink is a top-down soulslike set inside a single hand-crafted vertical world. You awaken at the summit of a hostile brutalist tower. To escape, you must find a way down. Explore a dense, nonlinear structure of shortcuts, locked routes, hidden drops and dangerous ledges. The tower is not a backdrop: understanding its shape is at the heart of the game.
Enemies yield ink. Printers turn it into your body, weapons and equipment, and form a network of checkpoints throughout the tower. Spend heavily on a powerful loadout, preserve your ink for future attempts, or risk transporting it to another printer.
Every death has a material cost. Die too often or spend too freely and your ink supply can run dry, ending the run.
Deliberate melee combat with blocking, parrying, rolling, and plunge attacks.
A nonlinear entirely hand-crafted tower.
Multiple weapons, enemies, and bosses.
Hidden routes, shortcuts, and blueprint upgrades.
Full controller support.

While the core combat and AI is quite stiff, if you are a fan of exploration focused souls-like games you'll likely find some good here. The aesthetic and level design are quite unique. While there's more I wish they would have done with the experience overall, I'd still recommend this game because there's not really anything else I'm aware of that's like it. And in with the number of games coming out these days, being unique counts a lot for me.
9/10 This game is special. I don't like soul's likes, but this game got it's hooks into me. It's a simple game; no super deep systems or complex mechanics. But the atmosphere is incredible (just LOOK at the screenshots!). There's no deep lore hidden away or anything, and there doesn't need to be. Gameplay consists of fighting through enemies and exploring the tower, and both aspects feel like piecing together a puzzle . . . when the pieces finally click, it's satisfying. The game is so small it has no guides or walkthroughs. And that honestly enhanced the experience for me; I felt truly alone in this strange tower, and each new discovery felt like a personal triumph. I honestly don't have anything to complain about for this game. The main complaint I saw in negative reviews referenced terrible feeling combat, but the combat felt good. Sure, there was some indie jank, but the actual combat I had no problems with. I am playing post combat update, so if there were problems, they must have been solved. One feature I wish the game included was the ability to remap key bindings. That's the biggest negative for me: only other thing is I had to grind enemies to get enough ink to re-spawn a couple of times, but that was less the game's fault and more because I'm a bad player. Dead Ink is a true hidden gem. If you're interested, check it out. And keep an eye on this developer; they're going places.
