Super-Pets, But Not Super Fun
I've played a lot of games meant for young kids due to my love for licensed games but this one might take the cake for worse one I've played in a while. This game feels like it was thrown together in about 2 weeks and dropped on the Steam store to make a quick buck with absolutely no love or care put into it at all. It does the bare minimum in terms of gameplay and presentation and has clunky controls that don't work half the time. I don't see young kids being able to sit through this, or older players like myself being able to find any enjoyment in it at all.
Presentation
At first glance, the game does indeed look quite nice. The graphics are good and perfectly fine for a game like this. Unfortunately that's where the positives end as the rest is quite lazy. Each playable character only has about 3 voice lines so you will hear the same few voice lines over and over and over again within the same level even. The voice actors form the movie are also not present here either. On top of that every level looks exactly the same and there are no cutscenes. Just dialogue between still images over the level select. This was a massive let down as it made going through the game a slog.
Gameplay
The gameplay of DC League of Super-Pets is average at best and terrible for the other 90% of the game. The levels are far longer than they should be, and each of the 15 levels look and play exactly the same. The dodge mechanic is clunky and you're lucky if you can get it to work 50% of the time. There's little enemy variety and despite having the whole screen, you're limited to aiming in only the center calf of it. It's also hard to see enemy fire at times due to your character taking up a large amount of the movable space so you will frequently get hit my things you can't even see. All this creates a frustratingly poor experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, avoid this game. Younger gamers will get too frustrated and bored despite the very short hour and a half worth of content, and older gamers will have nothing to keep them interested either. For $40, avoid it like the plague. Even on sale, I can't recommend spending your time or money on this pile of lazily developed crap. 40€ for a game that resembles a free-to-play mobile game? You're crazy. Regardless of the DC licence, that doesn't justify the exaggeratedly high price.
No, with the caveat that if you can get it for like $3 or less or included in a subscription/bundle (as I did) then it's not completely terrible. That said, I don't recommend it because the idea of actually buying this, especially for $39.99 the default price is offensive to me. This game has no content. Every level is basically the same city. They didn't even include cutscenes. It's just dialog boxes with portraits. I'm surprised they even had voiced lines. Remember when licensed games at least shoved in movie footage? This could've used that. It wouldn't save it, but it would make more sense than what is there. They tacked on some superfluous features that don't do much at all, because the adoption one you max out before you even finish the game so you just have no reason to even bother to go back into there since you got all the skill points it adds. You collect homeless pets in the levels, then you match them with people which gives XP toward a meter to get some Skill Points. It's just an extra barrier to upgrading your abilities. And Krypto and Ace aren't that different in terms of gameplay. You can get everything done in about 2 hours and change. I didn't bother to do the Wonder Woman section of side missions because in order to do that you have to decrease the 'safety' meter before they even appear, and there are three. So you'd have to play 6 additional levels to make them all appear. No thanks. And the side missions are super boring. The game makes it a bit difficult to aim and dodge at the same time due to the button layout on controller. Not sure why they didn't go with using the shoulder buttons for firing
"DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace" is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. But there's more to this. Let me try to explain what this is by explaining what happened here. What is this product with an eye watering AAA $40 price tag? Well, it's got a Warner Brothers/DC license for the Justice League universe, from the Super-Pets animated motion picture. Surely they wouldn't pay all that money for a license, and voice actors, just to push out garbage, would they?? I've reviewed well over 11,000 games on Steam and most of the time I'm reviewing games by people who don't know anything about game development, and they also lack the skill to produce high quality game assets, visuals and so on. When people who can't do that decide to try make a game anyway, you either get an amateur made game with bad graphics, or you get an asset flip. Neither is particularly valuable to gamers. But here, this is something quite rare and unusual. Here, we have someone who has no idea how to do game design matched with a really high budget set of game designers who made really great game assets that look just like the characters from the film they've licensed. Now, when I say they have no idea how to do game design, I mean it. This is a rear view shoot 'em up designed for the Nintendo Switch. You start off, fly around, shoot enemies. You can move up, down, left or right as you see the enemies coming at you from along the street. And you'd better like that street, because it seems they only hired the artists enough for one lousy map... and the whole game is just a repeat of the same assets. It doesn't go anywhere! You play this for 5 minutes and that's the whole game!! This is just a weird attempt to see what gamers are willing to pay for zero substance with a licensed property stapled onto it less convincingly that the pinup girl in the Shawshank Redemption. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. "DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace" didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing a level with 85% health or more, trivial to get, but less than 36 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? "DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace" has the laughable, eye-watering price of $40 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $40 asking price for this game could get you games like "Mass Effect Trilogy Pack", "Subnautica" or "Frostpunk". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. The price point here for a game with less depth than Space Invaders is simply an insult to gamers everywhere.
Game is pretty fun. If you're a fan of Star Fox/ On rails shooters, I highly recommend this game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj_AaJj8-pU&t=201s
Low budget and low effort rail shooter game with flying superhero dogs. No cinematics to speak of between levels, just dialogue panels with static portraits. Repetitive and shallow gameplay that doesn't even control that well. Repetitive and very limited number of sound clips for the dogs, maybe 4 or 5. Navigating the menus is a chore if you have a gamepad because the cursor drifts and the interface seems to be made for a mouse. Yet for actual flying and shooting, I wouldn't play this without a gamepad. The levels, all in Metropolis, always look the same in each of the three city sections. In the first city section, you'll constantly see the same 3 or 4 lame billboards as if they couldn't afford to do more. Paltry selection of uninspired enemies, just green and purple bots, maybe 5 or 6, not counting the boring bosses. The members of the League that aren't the dogs, Krypto and Ace, are not controllable and are like afterthoughts with one bonus given by each (useless for the turtle). There's an adoption game tacked on that initially seemed like a nice distraction, but it once again repeats graphics and lines way too much, which is a problem especially when you see people looking the same adopting. Plus even if you suck at finding compatible matches, you'll have maxed this up long before the game is over. I was intially attracted by the colorful graphics and the fact I didn't hate the movie, but this overpriced licensed cash grab was a disappointment. I doubt even kids would be interested in this one for long. Speaking of which, expect 1.5 hours to 3 hours of game length depending on how much you waste time in the adoption centre and if you play the side missions (which should have been part of the main game as they at least change the perspective and gameplay a bit).
One of the most boring, monotonous and mindless games I've ever played, but still more enjoyable than Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
This was a very short on rails shooter. Its pretty basic. If you're getting it for a young child, its a great game, pretty easy. As an adult... wow it was like the easiest on rails shooter i've ever played. I didn't die once. Anyway. I didn't watch the DC League of Superpets movie this was based off of, so I don't know much about the characters, but from what I gather you can play as Batman's dog or Krypto, Superman's dog. (Don't remember the bat-dog's name, honestly don't care). You also get power ups based on the other superheroes, a squirrel that is a Green Lantern somehow, Flash's pet turtle (wat), and Wonder Woman's PIG!? I only played the whole game as Batman's dog with the Green Lantern powerup because i thought Kryptos laser eyes weren't as good as the dog's batarangs, and the Green Lantern's ability to hit everything on screen far outweighed Flash Turtle's speed buff or Wonder Pig's damage shield. The plot also was almost non existent. Lex Luthor was building robots to fight the pets for some reason, I guess he doesn't have anything better to do with his billions of dollars. Just realized its in the title of the game... The bat-dog's name is Ace. I'm dumb.
