I seriously gave it a lot of thought if I should recommend the game or not as I like games by John Wizard. Unfortunately, I just can't get myself to enjoy this at all. This has nothing to do with the story line but rather the game play and concept of fights. If you like rpg maker games and a challenge, you should pick it up as it's not expensive at all. Now to why I can't enjoy it: - Monsters get stronger as well whenever you level up or get more party members. - No healing after level up. - Hard to outrun enemies which makes it nearly impossible to escape the battles. - Attack is mainly focused on one character because of the percentage. Overall, I have to use healing items a lot or I keep dying every second fight. I am a very casual player and want to relax while playing, not getting frustrated. I am not saying that it is a bad game though. It's just not the type of gameplay I enjoy in a rpg maker game. In my opinion it would be better if there was an easy mode that would give the player an edge over the enemies or let you at least heal whenever you level up.
20 hours. 20 hours of hilarious gameplay. John Wizard: YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN! Absolutely great game! The main quest is linear, so it's simple, and the side quests are interesting and easily completed without having to go back again and again. There's no grinding cause enemies are all gone after you defeated them once, so it's not boring. The cap of level 50 as being the max was sad though... The storyline, as usual of any JW game, is twisty and heartwarming. I'm still sad about the death of somebody's brother. Mannnnnnnn... Whatever it is, this game is definitely worth it! And on sale! Goodness! What a steal!!!
I was pleasantly surprised by this game. While the story itself was nothing special, the satire and comedy was great. I found myself enjoying that enough to want to explore the all of the nooks and crannies. I did not find everything, but I was fairly close by the time I hit endgame. I did not particularly enjoy the automatic enemy scaling power to match your level and number of party members, but it did make it feel like you were always challenged. All in all, it was a good RPG maker game that had a fair bit of effort put into it, and it was well worth the price.
This is a fun little game. A bit satirical, it is a blast and deals with some of the usual tropes. A guy goes out to do a good deed, returns to find his friends dead (at what might have been his own assassination), and decides to go off and find the culprits and bring them to justice. Along the way, he has to deal with own insecurities, and the possibility that his brother might be out there... waiting...
Time well spent. I enjoyed the humor of the main characters interactions, as well as the overall feel of the game. There were many side quests and stories that did not just feel like "go here get this item" boom done no other point. Each new area I opened for side quests also had different ways of going about the objectives of the quest. I never felt bored with the game which is hard to say since I have played an incredible amount of rpgs over the years. They had fishing, a battle arena a secret organization to join, different outfits for the characters to unlock a decent story with multiple endings as well as many places to save which I definitely appreciate being a person who saves games excessively. I think the thing I liked most about the game was that it was open to you at all times. You can miss over a side quest but do not lose on the opportunity to go back and get it. I never felt like oh great I can never do everything in this game in one try it was more oh I can explore more and do side things to lead to something better. Thankfully it was true. The more side quests you do the more items you receive, which in turn lead to better items at the end of the game. It helps you quite a bit to beat the last boss so all of your work wasn't for naught. What was nice as well was I did not feel like I was like just doing busy work. I felt like this had more opportunities in it for funny banter, character development as well as a way to further explore the world I was in as well as the people in it. One of the things I would get excited about would be when I would find a letter in the game. You take the letter to the post office and they decipher it for you and tell you to whom the letter is for. Then a map opens to the location of the place and you get to then explore more areas. After entering a dungeon I would make sure to check every area hoping to find a new letter. A lot of the times I would leave the dungeon and start on the letter before even finishing the place because I was so excited to see what would open up from it. The battles are challenging and the monsters level up with you so I ended up resting a lot, but there is a side quest which opens up an island of snow, and once you complete the objective, you can sleep there for 25 gold. Which is the cheapest place to rest in the game. A lot of the time since money was scarce in the beginning in particular, I would keep going back to that island to rest. Another thing that was great was once you killed a monster (except on slime island )they would be gone forever. So you would get the money the xp and not have to deal with them again. By the end areas of the game I was max level of 50 and had enough money to where I didn't need to fight the monsters at all which was a nice reward I thought. This is an incredibly rewarding game especially, one to be had on an rpg maker. I just wished I had played it sooner so I knew to buy Dawn's Light 2. For some reason this game isn't available to buy right now and I have no idea why. I hope that changes in the future with reviews like mine to show that even now people are wanting to buy more of the products created by this developer.
RPG Maker strikes again! Dawn's Light is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel JRPG ripoffs spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club weeaboo fan fiction. Basically, these guys didn't make a game, they filled out a couple of templates in a construction kit then proudly called themselves "developers". Also, like all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. Dawn's Light is a typical JRPG high school fan fiction using asset flips of the basic RPG tilesets, characters and so on. It's developed by John Wizard, who has achieved peak cringe by writing himself into some of these fan fictions along with his fictional anime waifu. And that's fine if people want to do that in their spare time but it's not so great to pay money and publish that on Steam and dump it into cheap nasty game bundles. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. Leave this terrible fan fiction in the shovelware bundles where it belongs.
