Introduction
Dash Fleet is a casual 2D game that has been ported onto Steam, after spending nearly one year on Android terminals. Its developer specializes in this hybrid genre of retro-style casuals, has sufficient experience on the PC platform and from what I’ve seen of its previous releases, they seem quite decent and definitely not the low-effort excuses for games that have kept popping up on Steam, in the past couple of years.
Story
No exact storyline per se. There is no formal introduction either, instead once you start the game, you are presented with the static page about the in-game controls. You maneuver flying creatures through obstacle courses. Would you need a plotline to this? My thoughts exactly.
Graphics
The visuals (courtesy of Unity Engine) are a throwback to far simpler times. 2D, large pixels, colorful backgrounds and assets. I like the incorporation of that arcade cabinet/machine around the edges of the screen. It strengthens the retro feel to Dash Fleet and controlling the characters, actually moves the border “joystick” as well. A nice touch from the devs which clearly cater to a certain group of gamers that are increasingly nostalgic about their hobby’s humble beginnings. Before marketing ploys such as DLC or expensive fads like Virtual Reality headsets represented the present and uncertain future of the gaming industry.
Audio
Repetition is the keyword here. The sounds are few and far in-between. Given the genre though, I wasn’t expecting an award-winning soundtrack. Perhaps the diversity of several tunes, but you can’t have them all for its price tag.
Gameplay
It seems easy enough. Instead of the “patented” Up/Down of Flappy Bird and its clones, you can dash further to the right or left and behind. The endless runner-like backgrounds and deadly traps, ensure that constant need to redress the flight pattern of your creature of choice. We’re talking of parrots, bats, bees and unicorns for now, since the developer promises more. They all fly at the same speed and feature the same maneuverability. Only the sounds they make and the effects trail they leave behind (such as rainbow, for the unicorn), really set them apart from each other. Besides the more common crushing traps in the form of giant totems, some levels feature ballistas shooting large arrows, swinging hammers or the occasional fireballs. All these obstacles need to be avoided since they spell “Game Over” as soon as they touch you. Your ultimate goal in Dash Fleet, is to attain the highest score you can, by intersecting mid-flight with floating coins. This action does get repetitive eventually and visual diversity will only get you so far. Just play in short sessions and you should be able to reach the game’s Achievements sooner rather than later.
Verdict
I wouldn’t have agreed to review this title if I would have considered it another useless cash grab on Steam. It’s very true that the Android version of Dash Fleet is free of charge, yet I can’t bring myself to drain my smartphone battery on gaming since I’m always within reach of my desktop or laptop. What you get for those 2 dollars/euros, is fully worth even the initial asking price. Steam Cards and Achievements, not to mention another title to your total games count. Dash Fleet is most certainly gonna get bundled at some point or get discounted even more during a Steam Sale. If you like 2D casuals, you have no reason not to purchase and play it.
Strong Points
+ Affordable. + Simple to learn, hard to master. + Steam Trading Cards & Achievements.
Weak Points
- Fairly repetitive gameplay. - Lacks sound variety.
Basic Info
Genre: Non-combat Arcade Side-scroller Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Gameplay
Rating: 5/10 Achievements for this game are broken and will NOT unlock You play one of a small fleet of flying creatures: a flying unicorn, a parrot, a bat and a bee. Your objective is to get through as many "gates" as possible on the procedurally generated map. A gate is any obstacles on the map. At first those are totem poles that tries to crush you from top and bottom, but soon arrows are introduced. Other obstacles are meteor showers, blade saws and a lot other obstacles. Any obstacle will kill you in once touch. The further you get, the more obstacles gets introduced. On your way, you are able to collect gold coins. Those gold coins act as a way to continue, should you be killed by any obstacle. At the first death you can continue for 50 coins and the more continues you use the more expensive each continue becomes. Fortunately the price of the continues reset back to 50 once you decide to no longer use any continue. Luckily for you, you are able to dash left and right to time the collection of gold coins and getting through the gates. You can also do a power move by pressing left dash and right dash, which will propel you further to the right than a regular dash. You compete against yourself and the leader boards to see who can get pasts the most gates.
Narrative
Rating: 0/10 The game has no narrative. I would have personally liked to know why those totem poles and arrows are trying to kill us, why we are collecting coins and why we are dashing through those "gates".
Visual Presentation
Rating: 7/10 Dash Fleet has a simple 16-bit 2D retro cartoon pixel art-style. It uses the unity engine and will run smoothly on most machines.
Audio Presentation
Rating: 4/10 The game has a very limited chip-tune sound track. The sound effects are top quality and fits the theme really well, unfortunately they are also very limited and gets repetitive very quickly.
Final Score
Rating: 4/10 Dash Fleet is a game you can easily spend 5-10 minutes casually on or spend several hours trying to beat your own high-score. While I have given this game a sub-par score, it does not mean it is a bad game. With some improvements this game could easily be a great game.
Dash Fleet is a casual/dash-reflex game with no ups to talk about. Pros: + None Cons: - Everything is meh. - It is an overused genre with zero value for pc gamers. 2/10 Uninspiring little reflex game with nothing to care about. Get cards, uninstall. It should have been a free game.
Update: I'm updating my review to not recommended. I originally figured the game was in its early stages and bugs may be worked out in the future. Alas, this was not to be. A number of players have complained, but the dev is completely unresponsive and no updates have been posted since my original review. The game is fun, but mediocre. Fine if you want a little arcade action, but I don't feel that others should reward this lack of development with a purchase. Original: Simple, basic game with easy controls, but somewhat difficult long-term gameplay. It reminds me of flappy bird in style, but it's not really the same. Comparatively, this causes much less rage quitting! The chiptune music is nice but a little repetitive after a while. (Might be nice to offer options for BGM?) The game has a few different character options, but as far as I could tell, it's for show only and doesn't affect game play. At the time of this review (with a record run of 77), achievements appear to be broken, which is unfortunate. Hopefully that will be resolved soon. Overall, it is a fun game with a good arcade challenge and is worth playing!
This is a very broken game. Not only is it impossible to unlock achievements due to them being broken, but after you die you can infinitely control your character in the background and get infinite points and coins. If these two items are fixed I'll write a more in depth review but at this point this game is completely broken. Not to mention the gameplay is that of a mobile app, and the Unicorn's and Bee's "death" animation is parrot feathers flying everywhere, instead of a custom one like the Bat has.
Gra nie warta zakupu. -Osiągnięcia są zabugowane, nie da sie ich zdobyć -Po śmierci nadal możemy kontrolować lot ptaka przez co można bez końca poprawiać wynik i zbierać monety
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
Don't bother. I'm not sure why these sorts of games interests people who play them on their phones. And there are literally thousands of more engaging titles for your PC. If you want to try a phone game that is a blast on Steam, try Shooty Skies.
