A retro shooter inspired by classics like Wolfenstein and Doom. Think of it as a tribute, a love letter to the games that defined a generation, with a few modern touches of my own. It’s tough, fast, and demands skill, just the way those old-school shooters did.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. Copies below reflect the player base, not paid sales.

About
Step into the chaos of Darkenstein 3D, a bullet-dodging retro FPS set deep behind enemy lines.
Inspired by the brutal pace of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory days of late 90s shooters, this game blends secrets, explosive physics, and a story driven by desperation… and a dog.
You play as the Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and pure vengeance. It’s 1940s Germany, and though you’re outnumbered and outgunned, you won’t back down. This isn’t about justice, it’s personal!
Gunther, your loyal companion, was taken during a Nazi raid. Now he’s locked away deep inside enemy fortresses. To get him back, you’ll need to push your limits through an uphill battle against the Axis forces. Along the way, you’ll uncover alien secrets, strange powers, and hidden horrors in a world crumbling under war.
Fast, brutal, skill-based. Darkenstein 3D doesn’t hold your hand. Enemy projectiles can be dodged, but survival requires sharp movement, precise aim, and quick thinking. Every battle is a deadly dance of strafes and corners. No cover mechanics, no aim assist, just raw gunplay.
Take on 13 handcrafted levels that steadily raise the stakes. Explore castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns. Unlock doors with hidden keys, discover secrets, hunt for treasure, and push your score higher and higher.
You won’t fight alone. A vicious rat companion joins the bloodbath, lunging at enemies and sowing chaos in close quarters. Combine him with grenades and mines for maximum destruction. He’s small, angry, and always hungry.
Explosive gore, ragdoll physics, and debris-filled firefights: every shot feels heavy, and every kill looks painful. Enemies fly, gib, and collapse in glorious carnage as the battlefield crumbles around you.
No microtransactions. No battle passes. No currencies. Just one complete, standalone retro FPS the way it used to be.
Built over four years by a single developer, Darkenstein 3D is a passion project turned full campaign. It’s hard, it’s funny, it’s handcrafted, and it’s packed with hours of replayable carnage.

A funny game influenced by Wolfenstein.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749340447

If you loved Wolfenstein 3D and you were there, you are certainly going to love this game! I play with my controller and that goes fine. The levels of this game are incredibily well crafted. For me, even on easy mode the game is pretty difficult. And when you're a bit of a bum like me, you will sure love that the main character is an angry hobo, looking for his dog! If you rescue a loyal rat along the way, you can throw this rat on the faces of your enemies. Cool weapon! My verdict is: I LOVE THIS GAME!!
No map Repetitive labyrinth
The best free game I think I have ever played. Think of a combo of Wolfenstein/Duke/Serious Sam and you will get the idea here. Nothing complicated, just run and gun. If you like those games you will find this fun. It's much better than many games I have paid for, but it is entirely free! The mechanics are very good. The voice acting is funny ( for the most part ). Yes, there are a few bugs. For the most part, it ran fine for me. I did have a problem loading the final act but I was able to get around it and complete the game. If this game looks interesting to you at all, just load it up and try it. You literally have nothing to lose.
Darkenstein 3D, 2.5 Stars, B-Tier. A good game to shoot and chill, nothing much going on regarding plot. Side characters offer nothing, and the game itself is quite buggy. Hitler fight was quite boring.
👍
Great game!! Never get tired of killing Nazi. Nice story and graphics. Very stable. A few slow downs, but it ran great overall.
:)
Good Game the pixelation is annoying... plays like the newer wolfenstein, looks like the original 2.5d wolfenstein... overall pretty dang good.
