Dark Erosion: Endless Siege, created and published by LaoLiang, is an indie roguelike action title that attempts to merge several familiar systems—survivor-style combat, gear crafting, and incremental progression—into a single, loop-driven experience. At a glance, it fits comfortably within the wave-based survival genre that has grown increasingly popular in recent years, but it distinguishes itself by leaning more heavily into long-term character building rather than purely run-based upgrades. The result is a game that feels less like a quick, disposable arcade experience and more like a slow-burn progression grind, where each attempt contributes meaningfully to future success. The core gameplay revolves around surviving escalating waves of enemies in contained arenas, where positioning, timing, and awareness become essential to staying alive. Combat unfolds from a top-down perspective, with the player constantly moving to avoid dense clusters of enemies and projectile patterns that grow more aggressive over time. Early encounters are manageable and serve as an introduction to the mechanics, but the difficulty curve rises steadily, eventually demanding careful build planning and mechanical precision. Boss encounters, in particular, highlight the game’s intensity, often requiring players to balance offense and survival while navigating chaotic attack patterns. When the systems click, the combat feels satisfying and deliberate, but there are moments where inconsistent responsiveness or unclear hit detection can make failure feel less deserved than it should. One of the more notable aspects of Dark Erosion: Endless Siege is its layered progression structure. Unlike many games in the genre that rely primarily on temporary power-ups within a run, this title builds a broader framework of permanent upgrades and customization systems. Players gather resources during gameplay and use them to craft equipment of varying quality, each piece contributing to their overall strength and playstyle. Runes add another layer of enhancement, allowing for stat boosts and fine-tuning, while collectible cards provide temporary modifiers that shape the direction of each run. This combination of systems creates a satisfying sense of forward momentum, as even failed attempts feed into a larger progression arc. However, the complexity of these overlapping systems can also feel slightly overwhelming, especially since the game doesn’t always do a strong job of clearly explaining how everything interacts. In terms of content, the game offers a reasonable amount of variety for its scale. Multiple difficulty levels introduce tougher enemies and higher rewards, while additional modes—such as endurance-focused challenges—encourage players to push their builds further. Unlockable areas and higher-risk encounters provide incentives for continued play, particularly for those who enjoy chasing optimization and efficiency. That said, the fundamental gameplay loop doesn’t evolve dramatically over time, and repetition can begin to set in once players have experienced the core mechanics across different variations. The enjoyment largely depends on how invested one is in refining builds and experimenting with different combinations of gear and upgrades. Visually, Dark Erosion: Endless Siege adopts a dark, somewhat somber aesthetic that aligns with its theme of a world overtaken by corruption. The environments are functional and serve their purpose as combat arenas, though they lack distinct visual identity or memorable landmarks. Character and enemy designs are simple but readable, which is important in maintaining clarity during hectic encounters. Effects tied to abilities and attacks add some visual energy, but the presentation overall remains modest. It’s not a game that impresses through visuals alone, but it maintains enough consistency to support the gameplay without becoming distracting. Where the game struggles most is in its level of polish. There are noticeable rough edges in areas such as UI design, control responsiveness, and balance tuning. Certain mechanics feel underdeveloped or insufficiently explained, which can lead to confusion or frustration, particularly for new players trying to understand the depth of its systems. Occasional bugs or inconsistencies further contribute to a sense that the game is still in a formative stage. While none of these issues completely undermine the experience, they do hold it back from feeling as refined as it could be, especially when compared to more established titles in the genre. Despite these shortcomings, there is a clear sense of ambition behind Dark Erosion: Endless Siege. It strives to offer more than a simple survival loop by integrating deeper progression and customization, and for players who enjoy methodically improving their builds over time, it can be quite engaging. The game rewards persistence, experimentation, and a willingness to adapt, which gives it a certain staying power for those who connect with its systems. However, its niche appeal and lack of broader polish mean it may struggle to maintain interest among players looking for a more immediately satisfying or highly refined experience. In the end, Dark Erosion: Endless Siege is a solid but uneven indie effort that succeeds in delivering a rewarding progression loop while falling short in execution and presentation. It’s a game that shows promise and dedication, offering moments of genuine satisfaction when its systems align, but it also demands patience from its players to overlook its flaws. For those who enjoy grind-heavy roguelike experiences with layered customization, it’s worth exploring; for others, it may feel repetitive and rough around the edges. Rating: 7/10
it's a good game, UI and menus are a little wonky but the gameplay is fun!
