I really do enjoy cyclone, it very much takes inspirations from Reeds past works, and gives the player a fun mechanic and style that is very reminisced of both blue portal and the original portal game. The only downside of playing cyclone right now is just how short it is. However knowing it's in early access it's only a matter of time before that's changed. Very much would recommend
I'm about a half hour into this game, and so far it's been really fun! It takes the familiar style of the Portal games and puts a unique twist on it. So it feels familiar, but not like a clone. The puzzles start off pretty forgiving, introducing you to new mechanics as you go, allowing you time to settle in and figure out how the different mechanics can combine to solve each room. Then the difficulty kicks in. At the moment, I'm stuck in a very tall, vertical room that I *know* I'll get through. Eventually. Just gotta coax my brain to figure it out. Anyways, Cyclone is relaxing and challenging in equal measure. A great combo at my advancing age :p
A fun, yet short experience reminiscent of the original Portal. Some people may be put off by this puzzles being more reaction based, something kind of unavoidable when your main mechanic consists of pushing things around, but I quite like it. Realizing what to do to progress and successfully placing your cyclones at the right time is just so satisfying. One complaint I have is how derivative some of the actual chambers are of the original ones from Portal. Though the solutions are of course marginally different due to using the Cyclone Cannon instead, it turns those chambers from puzzlers to just "Oh, this again." I would've like an expansion on some of the game's original mechanics, such as wall-jumping, double bounces, etc. Still, for five dollars, this is a fun experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to have their Portal itch scratched.
Cyclone is a piece of work, and I enjoyed every second of it. From a game as ambitious as this, I was not by any means dissatisfied with the experience. It runs really smoothly on low end hardware, and despite first thoughts, I didn't get any motion sickness from the cyclone itself. The puzzles were well designed, and some were even nods to the original Portal's chambers, which I liked. Using the cyclone feels really nice, especially when climbing walls, with the sound design feeling punchy and making it feel like you're making storms with your hands. I didn't find any ways to cheese the game super badly or mess up the puzzles either. An issue I have with a lot of games is that walking is slow and annoying, but this game didn't have that issue at all, the movement was nice and quick, and the cyclone's launch speed was tuned almost perfectly. Since it's still in early access, I can expect more coming and I look forward to it, this is essentially the next Portal made by fans. It is definitely worth 5 bucks, and it's fun to replay. The only issues I had were with parts/sections of the map popping in about half a second after looking in their direction, and my options resetting on relaunching the game. Either way, it's a great experience and right up your alley if you liked the Portal series. Reepblue and their team know how to make masterpieces.
Although marketed as a Portal clone, this game focuses more on easy puzzles with aspects of 3D Platforming. The timing required for the puzzles sometimes feels a little too tight to me. The new Flag Run mode is a nice 3D platforming diversion that imo could easily be the focus of the entire game. However, it's currently missing leaderboards in its early access state.
OLD PUNT
okay so i don't hate the idea of something being inspired by portal. puzzle platformers are some of my favorite types of games to play and i've had my eyes on this for a while especially knowing it's made by the same person who did blue portals. that's genuinely always been one of my favorite portal mods ever the problem is, from the screenshots it looks like it's just portal but with a slightly different gun mechanic rather than straight up copying the portals. and now that i've actually played through what's called the "crash course" levels, it's just portal. and again, portal inspired games are definitely something i look for. valve struck gold with portal 1 and 2. but in the state it's in, cyclone is JUST a portal clone effectively. the game goes for the style portal 1 had with the more polished, non hl2-based asset look of portal 2 visually. and gameplay wise, the cyclone was an interesting mechanic for like. the first few chapters only. portals in terms of gameplay had something that no other game had done before because it was new. it brought new gameplay opportunities and puzzles because no one had seen anything like it when the first game, and to an extent the second game released. the cyclone as a mechanic is effectively the blue gel from portal 2. it behaves exactly the way you'd expect it to and if it was a big blob of blue on the ground, it'd be the same. the other gameplay elements are exactly how they were in portal / p2. cube and button work how they always do, minus the physics engine. obv havok is outdated but the cube feels weird when being held. almost like it's trying really really hard to stay in front of the player and is almost failing. it's really floaty and not that great. the energy ball / catcher are literally straight up what was in portal 1 except you have to kinda use the cyclone in a clunky manner honestly to redirect them since you don't have a portal gun this time around. the stationary bridges are exactly like how they are in both games as well. it's genuinely just portal without portals half the time down to chambers effectively being taken from portal 1 and put in here with slight modifications. chamber 12 is basically chamber 13 down to the exact puzzle and the solution. it's just that some things are moved around because again, no portals. it's just a lot of take, change slightly, paste. and that's fine except it doesn't make for a fun original thing. and i'm fr not wanting to be negative. i'm really hoping it doesn't come off too negative. i want this to be amazing because blue portals does a lot of sick things and everything reepblue has posted on their YT channel over the years shows they have a lot of creativity when used right, but there's a big big difference between inspiration and copying. and i hate to say that because i want this to be so good. it may honestly be the right type of game for some people, i don't know. but me personally, i want a great game that takes the puzzle foundation of portal (aka the way it plays, the way it feels) and make a new game out of that that obviously takes inspiration but is its own thing. yknow? i didn't buy this wanting a portal 3 and i 100% get that's not what they were going for but it kinda comes off that way. really hoping it grows more into its own thing as it keeps getting updates.
This is a brilliant puzzle game, it gives you the portal feeling for sure and is similar to portal, except you use gravity vortexes with the test elements in unique ways instead. It’s very fun and somewhat entertaining, go check it out!
Amazing concept of a Portal-esque puzzle action game, with something different from Portal.
