About
Cursed Crew is a crew management roguelite where you’re a captain sailing the untamed seas! You’re responsible for giving orders, managing the ship’s resources, keeping your crew happy, fighting pirates and beasts, and taking charge when all hell breaks loose. But you and your crew are cursed, destined to sail endlessly, unless you can find a way to break free!
The following features are already in the current version of the game:
Survival (hunger, sleep and morale needs)
Crafting and cooking
Travelling on a world map
Random events
Boarding and close combat
Ship to ship combat
Dynamic weather
Many weapons, items and cannons
Various creatures and bosses
Various humanoid races you can recruit
Various ships and ship variants
And more will be added in the future!
A ship needs both a captain and a crew. As the captain, you command your crew and stock the ship with supplies and food to keep everyone happy and healthy. You also plunder and spend treasure, plot your ship’s course, and pick story events that lead to battles, treasure, or secrets.
Your crew takes care of the ship with or without orders: they steer, build, repair, go fishing, and prepare meals. In battle, they put out fires, haul supplies, load and man cannons, and defend your ship from beasts and enemy sailors. Your crew is an asset—so long as their morale is high. Positive events like well-fought victories, a good night’s rest, and delicious food and grog boost your crew’s morale, whereas unpleasant situations like lost battles, shipmate deaths, sleep deprivation, and starvation hurt it. A resentful crew member is a problem: they might ignore your orders, throw destructive tantrums, lose all motivation to work, or even start a mutiny against you!
These waters are infested with danger, so do whatever it takes to defend your ship! Order your crew to construct and man the cannons and fire at anything that moves. Batter your enemies with grapeshot and hull-breaching artillery, and use harpoon guns to reel in and board enemy vessels for a proper swashbuckling battle. Clear out those scallywags by arming your crew with daggers, cutlasses, flintlock pistols, muskets, and bombs.
Prepare for many deadly encounters on your journey. The high seas are filled with murderous pirates, skeleton crews, ghosts, rat men, packs of killer sharks, violent winds and storms, ravenous megalodons and more!
Set sail in a vessel that tells the world what kind of captain you really are. There are variants of each ship and they all come with their own starter loadout.
Caravels: Swift and well balanced, these ships are excellent at catching and boarding weaker vessels.
Carracks: Big and made for war, they’re slower than most ships, and they often come with more cannons than men.
Cogs: Sturdy and resilient with a fortified castle, they’re capable of taking a hit and returning the favor with their devastating mortars.
Raiders: Originally built as trading vessels, these medium-sized ships are designed for speed and maneuverability.
Arrange and decorate your ship’s deck and floors just how you like them. A well-designed ship has strategically placed cannons, protected hammocks for sleeping, and stores of food and goods. Don’t forget structures for crafting like a woodworking bench, tailoring bench, smithy, cartography table, and kitchen.
Make a memorable team of buccaneers by customizing your captain and crew! Experiment with fashionable hairstyles, mustaches, expressions, tattoos, hats, attire, and more. Create a flag to match and strike terror into the hearts of the unfortunate sailors who cross you!
🎮 Cursed Crew 🎮
I thought it would be like oxygen not included but on a pirate ship. This should be my dream game...unfortunately the execution isn't there, the controls aren't satisfying, UI is ok, the things to do are very limited, and it's over all just not very fun. Combat is very lacking.
bought this game early on and really hoped they'd put out regular updates. The game has a decent frame work but it's just kinda empty right now. not enough variety, controls are extremely clunky. You have very limited control over your crew and ranged combat is very samey and for the most part easy. But melee combat is a total crapshoot. Ive seen about one update drop since purchase months ago and it seemed to just add a tutorial that is incredibly clunky and breaks over and over. I want to like this game. But it needs a lot of TLC to make this enjoyable. If they were actually updating the game I'd be much more forgiving but it seems like they largely abandoned it at this point.
Cant recommend it in current state. first off, bugs. in no particular order; Beds cannot be placed together touching each other or no crew will use them. not sure if this is a bug or a "feature" because there is zero indication where the interact point is and this chooses to work at seemingly random. only solution is to space them out on all sides. Crew members get stuck on the stairs of your ship with zero way to reset them. happened in about 1 in every 5 or 6 runs. Loading points will randomly get stuck, meaning you can't go to the next zone. this is only fixed by Alt+f4 and then choosing a different event for the prompt, effectively randomly locking you out of an option. If there are wisps on the map when you get into combat, and the wisps become aggro'd, you will never be able to go to the after screen because "all threats have not been resolved", unless you kill all the wisps(not gonna happen). Gameplay elements that are underbaked/don't make sense; crew will regularly avoid using their ranged weapons if they have a melee weapon, regardless of if they can't use them. You cannot choose your currency when you click "repair ship" option(important because certain currency denominations are used in crafting recipes) there is no dedicated button to prioritize extinguishing fires or dealing with leaks. you just have to hope the crew does it, or use the manual controlling which is extremely clumsy. Trying to right click anything on a ship that sways back and forth is abysmal. the hitboxes for picking up items or doing actions is also abysmally small, with the aformentioned fires being the worst offender. Ship to ship combat boils down to either spamming between F2, F3, and F4. that's it, really. no option to target specific areas, no indications on cannons for max range or effective range unless you hover over each cannon specifically while also using the spyglass, and it still doesnt show effective range, no way to know what chance you have to hit or where besides one large cone, nothing. There is also no stated reason to use any specific cannons. Does the sniper cannon do more damage? is range on cannons really important(Spoiler; no)? does the mortar cannon hitting the deck more often matter(spoiler, it doesn't and also the mortar cannon almost always misses)? anything to indicate why you should use one cannon over the other. not enough events to make every playthrough feel different. there's always repeats in every game. double the price of FTL, which is what this games trying to emulate with this system. Boarding combat is kind of fun, but once again suffers from the inability of crew to properly use ranged weapons. Although they melee and board pretty effectively and it is fun boarding. No indication of what repairing your ship for money is for and for why. letting your crew patch it up with boards seems infinitely more effective. also, repair price seems to be completely arbitrary, with me having almost full health on a ship and it costing more than when my ship is on deaths door. Health being a system where you will almost never go above 75% because you regenerate super slow and your only source of fast healing in the game heals you to 75% only. The variety of melee weapons isnt very good for the early game. it consists of three weapons, and generally only the starting dagger is seen for most of the first two maps, maybe the club here and there. the other later game weapons are equally sparse when you start encountering them, but it kind of makes sense considering they are stronger. the club has a critical strike where you knock someone down. this is completely useless as knocking someone down makes them invincible. Lastly, you are going in completely blind. there is no wiki, and almost zero videos on this game. you have to just hope its good and dive in. with 68 reviews at time of writing, you are not going to find out anything about this game, besides the reviews, which most of them are just talking about the mods these guys developed for rimworld. yeah, the mods are pretty good, but that has nothing to do with this game. I really like the developers, I just don't think it's worth 20 bucks in it's current state. I would say around 10 would be more fair, but even then it's a "get it if you really like the concept and developers." just some small gripes that come together into a big reason that make the game a no from me.
We need chinese shuan Q
In my opinion this game absolutely bangs. It's like a Rimworld colony in the background as you advance through a roguelite style mission with a Slay the Spiresque map. The combat plays very similarly to Don't Starve in crew to crew combat when boarding while ship to ship combat is more like a top down Sea of Thieves where you or your crew members are bringing ammo from storage to canons then firing them when the enemy ship is in your line of fire/range. The game has a system where you can optionally take a one minute break to simply sail and play colony management after every map event or just go right to the next one, it allows you to finish a run in around 30 minutes or spend two hours on a run which I really enjoy. I had a ton of fun in this game so far, there's a lot of different events with choice trees similar to Slay the Spire or FTL and the different tactics or playstyles of the crew weapons and ship canons was a lot of fun to play with, but I wouldn't say that this game has reached infinite replayability yet. I think you could easily get one hour out of every dollar you could put into Cursed Crew at the point it's currently at though, and with more stuff I could see myself sinking thousands of hours into this game. I'm currently playing past the point of unlocking anything just for fun. Also the people who made this have made really high work quality in the past. I've gotten hundreds of hours for free out of mods they made, as soon as I heard they had made a standalone game I was opening up the steam store to buy it and man, they are really cookin over there in the Netherlands. All in all 9/10 game, probably 10/10 when they add more content. Insane more people don't play this I hope it blows up Edit, as of now there have been very few updates for this game. I have a lot of trust in the people who made this game from their previous work however the only patch in the past like 6 months was a minor bug fix and nothing new has been added since I originally wrote this review. If the price tag is a problem for you at all I would wait to purchase this game until the developer proves they are not going to simply abandon this game. Edit #2, the developer has put out an update today explaining his situation and the reason for a lack of updates. His response and re-commitment to developing this game has swayed me back in favor of a positive review. Of course indie games have less resources and staff to post frequent updates and his honesty as well as his willingness to communicate these issues are, in my opinion, a sign of a good developer. I will state again that his previous works, which were made without appropriate compensation, were always an obvious labor of love to me and were never short of incredible. I would also note that while these infrequent updates may be a turn off to some people I have been able to get more than 70 hours of incredibly fun gameplay from the current alpha version of the game, which to me would more than justify the current $20 price, and I will certainly be playing a lot more when the upcoming update launches, because of that I will once again change my stance to recommending you purchase this game if it interests you. Again, due to my experiences with content from this developer I have much more trust in them than I do in any other developer and I wholeheartedly expect this game to be another incredible piece of work from them.
Writing a completely different review as the Devs have swiftly acted upon the communities complaints. This game is great. A nice pirate themed roguelike adventure management game with really good sound and gameplay. Managing your crew through the 7 seas, fighting other ships, creatures, and bosses is extremely fun. Hoarding all the resources, money, and weaponry you can get your dirty pirate hands on is very satisfying. Pros: -Very fun gameplay -Satisfying combat -LOOT -CRAB ARMY -good music/sounds -decent replay-ability Cons: -Crew member AI is a little dumb at some things -Ship battles can be kind of annoying with how slow ships can turn at times -DEAR GOD THE FRAMES DIE WHEN YOU HAVE 10 CREW MEMBERS, 13 CRABS IN YOUR CRAB ARMY, AND ALL THE LOOT IN THE WORLD ON YOUR SHIP (entity lag especially when in a ship fight needs to be optimized like crazy) -Some RNG can ruin your day Over all I fully recommend getting this game. It is very enjoyable and the devs are very attentive to the community and have some really cool features lined up (I just hope they can optimize the entity lag more first) Also, COOP WOULD BE SO GOOD PLEASE ADD IT
This is a game with the potential to push the frontier of "choose your adventure" event-style roguelike/lites like FTL and Slay the Spire. It's a perfect blend of colony manager, ship battler, and roguelike. You are not the ship, you are the captain; if you die, you lose. And that makes it so much better. After playing 3 runs, I can safely say that WHEN FINISHED, I will be adding this game to my "forever games" list that I always return to. However, I strongly urge people to come back later and check the progress before buying, unless you want to buy to support the dev. I was constantly being blocked by invisible barriers and hauling around fake resources at 25% speed that I couldn't get rid of. My last run was ended by an unfixable leak that everyone stood around mopping up forever, while the resources to repair it sat a few paces away. I put my money on this game being legendary someday; just not today.
I love the Concept and Art in Cursed Crew. The art reminds me of "Don't Starve" or "Oxygen Not Included". While CC does not reflect those games in any way, it is still fun and wacky to say the least. CC is in early access and filled with minor issues(bugs), however the developers are attentive and caring. With any game in early access you will always find unpleasantries, however my biggest one would have to be the price point! Like always, i point out that games should always be under 20, but that is just me. If you are looking for some Roguelike/strategy then try the DEMO! Blockhead APPROVED!!!
