Alright. Cubic Light is done and dusted. This is a pretty simple puzzle game overall, so let's dive right in. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3253849693 Your goal is to match colored cubes to their corresponding cubes/rows on the puzzle. When they don't have a number attached, they will light up the entire row they are placed on, in the direction the arrow(s) points. When they do have a number, they will light up the corresponding amount of cube slots in the direction the number arrow is facing. When a cube is colorless, you have the option to change its color to be used on the location of the puzzle you believe it belongs. When you light up the entire puzzle, you have completed the level. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3253849642 There are seventy five levels in total. The majority of these are incredibly easy and will take you exactly as long as it takes to move the cubes into position. So, a minute or two tops. Until you get to level seventy. That difficulty spikes pretty high for the remaining puzzles, and there is no ramp up in difficulty before that, so level seventy in particular will probably take you a little while as you sort out the new style of puzzle offered, wherein it becomes a bit of a Tetris affair. If you really mess up though, you can also just restart the puzzle. It's funny in a way. For the puzzle enthusiast, the extremely casual nature of the first sixty nine puzzles will probably be a negative, whereas for the casual puzzle fan or gamer who just has a few minutes at hand to play something, the final six puzzles will probably be the negative. I think more balanced difficulty scaling throughout would have been a better way to handle things. This is a game seemingly ported to Steam with achievement hunters in mind, so that might have factored into the design decision. Dunno. I am only guessing as to the developer's motivation. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3253849610 I note that this is a very pretty game. The way the colors are presented is quite striking in my opinion. The music is probably royalty free, but it has a cool, kind of Harry Potter meets The Room type of vibe. It plays on repeat but somehow avoids being annoying. This is a mobile port as mentioned earlier, and you can definitely use the touchscreen on the Steam Deck or simply use a controller. That will make each puzzle take longer though due to the slow down in clicking and placing the appropriate cubes. Simple mouse control is the ideal way to play this. I received this license via my Robilar's Reviews curator program. I think if you're looking for a pick up and play game that doesn't particularly challenge you, but can keep you occupied for a few minutes here and there, this is a game worth looking at. If you like a challenge, this won't offer that outside of the final six levels. All told, Cubic Light took about three hours to complete with a bit of extra time spent idling while I was going through the very limited options and taking a look at the game's background. Is it worth $2.99? I think that depends on which category of gamer I listed above you think you fall into. It will certainly be on sale at some point, so if you're not sure, just wait for that. Personally, I thought it was fun enough and wouldn't have been upset by the price tag. 5/10 Place shapes on the grid to light up all the squares. What is it: Something like the Blocks puzzle, or Tangrams, or even Jigsaws. You have to cover up a grid of colored cells with the available shaped blocks. The first levels have a few blocks that extend infinitely in any combination of the four directions, like vertical or horizontal beams, Ls, Ts, or crosses. Later levels add numbered blocks, which extend only a fixed number of cells. Every 5 levels you get a more complicated level in which you start with uncolored blocks, you must both find the right place and choose the right color for each block. Overall, the game is very easy. Even with the blank blocks there’s almost no challenge, since the grid is split into areas that require only one or two obvious blocks. Out of the 75 levels, only 5 are non-trivial, and only one of those is actually challenging. This puts the game in the “relaxing” category, but the sharp turn up in difficulty near the end means that players looking for a challenge will get bored long before the end, and the casual players looking for a relaxing game will get seriously frustrated at level 70. The controls are a bit problematic. On a PC the hint for switching colors is unintuitive, it seems to suggest that the middle mouse button is supposed to be used, but it’s actually: click to pick up a piece, scroll up or down to switch the color, click to put down. On the Steam Deck or when a controller is plugged in the mouse is disabled, which makes it slow to move a piece, and frustrating to select a piece since clicking right to select the piece to the right often goes up-right and selects a different piece, so depending on the arrangement of the pieces I would sometimes have to move a different piece close to the piece I really wanted to pick up just to be able to select it. Overall? A relaxing puzzle that could use more levels, a more gradual ramp up in difficulty, and a few other QoL improvements. Only recommended as a relaxing easy puzzle. How hard is it: Mostly trivial with a few challenging levels. How long is it: 75 levels, unlocked one at a time. Can be finished in 2-3 hours, more if playing with a controller due to the slower movement. Level design: Simple easy levels with obvious solutions, I would have liked more proper images instead of abstract splatter art. Quality: Poor. Cloud saving and a decent level select. Spammy achievements, barely any settings, fuzzy graphics and hard to read text on a small screen like the Steam Deck. Worth the price: I’d wait for a discount. Most positive aspect for me: Nothing in particular. Most negative aspect for me: Too easy. What would make it better: More levels. Harder levels, with a gradual ramp up in difficulty. Fewer and more meaningful achievements. Don’t disable the mouse/trackpad when a controller is detected. White mode. Better support for the Steam Deck screen size. Better directional block selection with the thumbstick. Multiple (or all) levels unlocked at once, or a Skip Level option. A hint system. Random and Daily levels. Also consider: Shatris, grid covering with tiles of different shapes, many many more levels for the same price. Tangrams Deluxe, decent Tangrams game. Pixsaw, similar grid covering game with trivial levels. its a puzzle game with most of the work cut out for you with all the colors given, honestly it could use a bit more level and maybe a leveling system to play around with. As a sandbox game it gives me a few ideas and is pretty fun on its own. The only challenge is level 70 and maybe the color switching ones. All in all just an achievement game. Try it out if you wanna just chill out and have youre fun.
Recommend for puzzle enthusiast as it has a slight "jigsaw" twist style to the game. The instructions were a little vague on the color change ability. Once it was understood, the mechanics of this game are simple. The levels were increasing with difficult at a good pace that you won't get frustrated easily.
