Cuban Missile Crisis

This game basically combines everything that I like. Nice retro visuals, alternative history, postapocalyptic setting after WW3 and dynamic campaign with tactical map where you can decide what you want to do next. Also units gaining experience and being able to take them into next missions if you keep them alive. But beware that this game can be very tough and unforgiving. Be prepared to use quick save/quick load quite a lot. Little bit like in Commandos series where everything could go wrong in every second. If enemy notice you and they have artillery avalible within range, you can bet your helmet that they will use it, just like in real war. So be ready to reposition your units quicky. Especially your own artillery cause enemy can pinpoint your location when you use it (you can do the same to them via minimap). So your first interest should be to get rid of the enemy artillery. And second most important thing you should remember - NEVER send your units somewhere without scouting the location first. Most of the times enemy is dug in and waiting for you so sending your army somewhere without scouting the location first is mostly a suicide. This ain't the Command & Conquer type of strategy. Game has pretty deep lore if you don't mind reading and I was pleasantly surprised to see pretty cool, almost documentary-like intro that also introduce you nicely into the world. It's quite tought especially at the beginning but it gets easier soor after you learn game mechanics plus you will be able to gain more units. If you ever played classic rts called Blitzkrieg you already know what to expect, since this game works on the same engine and has very similar gameplay. Sudden Strike was very close to this as well. Game works fine for me without any modding (win10). So if you searching for hardcore but cool oldschool rts without base building where you actually need to use tactics to win, give this one a chance! When on sale it's under 1 buck (1,5 of you want to buy stand alone dlc as well) and for this price it's absolute steal.
Very underrated game imo. In Cuban Missile Crisis you can choose 4 factions; USSR, China, USA-UK aIliance and France-German EU alliance. You can "buy" units if you have resources. Each chapter you have "tactical" map where you can move your units around and choose where to strike. Units require fuel, ammo and spare parts for repairs. I specially like the turned based singleplayer component and unit logistics in this game. Thumbs up
This game is simple yet complex. I love taking out the enemy defenses before going full siege on the enemy base. Cuban missile crisis is honestly an under rated yet goated game it offer a great selection of units(Variety for every type except infantry) and the sound track goes hard primarily campaign themes in game music is generally chill. It offers a variety of theatres not just US vs USSR so bonus points for that. I got it for a good price i'd say it's worth it only complaint unit AI can be a bit mischievous at sometimes but that doesn't bother me.
Cuban Missile Crisis, developed by G5 Software and published by Fulqrum Publishing, is a real-time strategy and grand strategy hybrid that explores one of the darkest “what if” scenarios of the Cold War era. Set in an alternate history where the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 escalates into full-scale nuclear war, it envisions a world devastated by atomic conflict, forcing the surviving superpowers and their allies to fight for dwindling resources in a radioactive wasteland. The game blends the tension of its historical premise with deep tactical and logistical mechanics, offering a grim yet fascinating vision of a world on the brink of extinction. It’s not simply about commanding armies—it’s about survival in a shattered world where supply chains and strategy are as vital as military might. At its core, Cuban Missile Crisis combines two distinct gameplay layers: a turn-based global strategy map and a real-time tactical battlefield. On the strategic map, players move their divisions, secure territories, manage supply depots, and make high-level decisions that determine the fate of their faction. There are four playable sides—the United States, the USSR, the Euro Alliance, and China—each with unique units and technological approaches to warfare. Every move you make on this map matters: fuel, ammunition, and spare parts are scarce, and overextending your forces can lead to disastrous consequences. When opposing armies clash, the game transitions seamlessly into real-time combat, where the focus shifts from planning to execution. In battle, players must control units directly, exploiting terrain, line of sight, and environmental hazards. These battles emphasize positioning and conservation rather than brute force; losing even a few vehicles or troops can cripple your campaign due to the difficulty of replacing resources. One of the game’s defining features is its emphasis on logistics and survival. Unlike many traditional RTS titles where resources are plentiful and units are easily replaced, Cuban Missile Crisis enforces a scarcity that adds a sobering layer of realism. Fuel convoys can be ambushed, supply lines can be severed, and units stranded without ammunition are virtually useless. Even environmental conditions—radiation zones, damaged terrain, or contaminated areas—affect gameplay, forcing you to adapt or risk attrition. This creates an atmosphere of constant tension, where every decision carries weight and every victory feels hard-earned. It’s a slower, more methodical type of strategy that rewards patience and foresight over speed. Fans of games like Sudden Strike or Blitzkrieg will recognize its tactical foundation but will find a deeper, more unforgiving layer beneath it. Visually, the game reflects its mid-2000s roots but still carries a distinct tone. The battlefields are bleak and desolate, filled with ruins, scorched forests, and crumbling cities that effectively convey the devastation of nuclear war. The muted color palette, combined with weather effects and environmental destruction, enhances the post-apocalyptic mood. Vehicles and infantry are rendered with solid attention to detail for their time, and the engine supports destructible environments, adding a tactile sense of realism to the battlefield. Watching tanks grind through radiation zones or infantry retreat from toxic clouds reinforces the theme that this is not just another war—it’s the aftermath of humanity’s greatest failure. The sound design complements the setting with distant explosions, mechanical clanks, and eerie silence between engagements, giving the battles an oppressive, war-torn authenticity. Cuban Missile Crisis is also notable for its ambition in merging two complex strategy systems, though this ambition occasionally outpaces its execution. The strategic layer, while conceptually deep, can feel cumbersome due to its minimalist interface and lack of clear feedback. The real-time battles, on the other hand, sometimes suffer from clunky pathfinding and inconsistent AI behavior, especially when commanding large groups of units. Micromanagement can become overwhelming, particularly in longer missions where maintaining your supply lines and keeping your units alive requires constant attention. These design quirks can frustrate newcomers, especially those expecting a more streamlined experience. Yet for players who appreciate old-school military simulations and are willing to learn its systems, these rough edges contribute to the game’s depth and authenticity. The campaign structure reinforces the game’s emphasis on strategy over spectacle. Each mission has long-term consequences, and success often depends on how efficiently you preserve your resources rather than how many enemies you destroy. There’s a sense of progression and permanence—units that survive one battle can carry over to the next, often gaining experience and value. This continuity gives players a personal investment in their armies, making every loss sting. The branching campaign also allows for different approaches depending on the faction chosen. Whether commanding NATO forces trying to maintain control of Europe or Soviet remnants struggling to rebuild their influence, each playthrough feels distinct, thanks to unique starting positions and strategic challenges. While the game’s realism and ambition make it stand out, it is not without its limitations. The user interface is dense and dated, and the learning curve is steep. There’s little handholding, and the tutorial offers only a basic understanding of the mechanics. Modern players may find the pacing slow compared to contemporary RTS games, and the visuals, while atmospheric, have aged considerably. However, beneath its dated presentation lies a rewarding system that rewards strategic thinking and careful planning. Its unique post-apocalyptic Cold War setting also sets it apart from the usual World War II or futuristic military simulations, offering a fresh yet sobering look at how fragile civilization can be. Cuban Missile Crisis ultimately succeeds because it dares to do something different. It challenges players to think like a commander managing the last remnants of civilization rather than a general leading endless waves of troops. Its mix of global strategy, real-time tactics, and resource management creates a uniquely tense and immersive experience. While its rough edges and steep difficulty may deter casual players, those who persist will discover a game of surprising depth and atmosphere. It’s not just a war game—it’s a meditation on desperation and survival in a world undone by human hubris, a grim but fascinating “what if” that lingers long after the final bomb has fallen. Rating: 7/10

Interesting rework of original Blitzkrieg campaign with dynamic elements and mechanics, but the lack of unit types and map diversity is quite serious after few hours in, especially with the amount of secondary tasks and battles one has to go through. Nice try anyway.
good game
