Crowborne by DIG Games is a side-scrolling action platformer that tries to stand out by combining multiple movement and combat systems into a single character-driven experience. You control a shapeshifting protagonist capable of switching between a grounded humanoid form and a crow form, with the latter granting limited flight and added mobility. The premise sets up a rescue-driven journey through hostile territory, but the real focus is on how these dual forms interact with traversal, combat, and level design rather than on storytelling itself. The idea of shifting between forms has clear potential. In practice, it creates moments where movement feels more flexible than in a standard platformer, especially when flight is used to bypass hazards or explore vertical space. However, the execution doesn’t always support that promise. Movement can feel slightly imprecise, particularly during jumps or mid-air adjustments, which is a problem for a game that relies on timing and positioning. Switching between forms is conceptually interesting, but the transitions don’t always feel smooth enough to become second nature, and this can interrupt the flow of play rather than enhance it. Combat follows a simple structure built around melee strikes and ranged attacks. Enemies populate most levels, but encounters tend to be straightforward and predictable. There’s little need to adapt tactics beyond basic spacing and attack timing, and enemy variety doesn’t evolve enough to keep fights engaging over time. Early on, the mix of combat and platforming feels serviceable, but as the game progresses, the lack of depth becomes more noticeable. Encounters begin to blur together, and the absence of new mechanics or meaningful escalation reduces the sense of progression. Level design attempts to incorporate both forms and their abilities, but it rarely pushes them in creative ways. Many sections rely on familiar platforming layouts without introducing memorable twists or challenges that make full use of the shapeshifting concept. While there are moments where flight adds a layer of freedom, most levels feel structured in a way that doesn’t fully capitalize on it. This leads to a repetitive rhythm where players move from one obstacle to the next without encountering significant variation or standout set pieces. Visually, the game leans on a retro-inspired 2D style, but the overall presentation feels uneven. Some elements are clear and readable, which helps during gameplay, but others lack detail or cohesion. The environments do their job as functional backdrops, yet they rarely create a strong sense of place or atmosphere. Character design and animation are serviceable, but they don’t carry enough personality to leave a lasting impression. The aesthetic works in a basic sense, but it doesn’t elevate the experience. The audio design is similarly restrained. Sound effects provide necessary feedback for actions and enemy interactions, but the overall soundscape is minimal. Music and ambient audio do little to shape the mood or intensity of the game, leaving much of the experience feeling flat from an audiovisual perspective. It supports the gameplay without adding to it in any meaningful way. Pacing remains consistent throughout, but not in a way that builds momentum. The game moves from level to level without introducing major shifts in structure or tone, which can make the journey feel predictable. There are no significant gameplay changes or surprises that redefine the experience as it unfolds. This steady but unvaried progression makes it easy to understand but difficult to stay fully engaged over longer sessions. One of the more noticeable issues is the lack of polish across several areas. Controls, presentation, and overall responsiveness feel functional rather than refined, and this affects how the game is perceived moment to moment. None of these issues are severe enough to completely break the experience, but together they create a sense that the game’s ideas were not fully developed before release. Crowborne ultimately comes across as a project with a solid concept that never quite reaches its potential. The combination of platforming, combat, and shapeshifting could have created a more dynamic and memorable experience, but the execution remains too basic and inconsistent to fully deliver on that promise. It offers a straightforward playthrough that may appeal to players who enjoy simple platformers and are willing to overlook rough edges, but it struggles to stand out in a genre filled with more polished and inventive titles. Rating: 5/10
