Absolutely charming through and through, if difficult and...more than a little buggy, at least on Windows. (Apparently the Linux version is A-OK, so if you can do that, do that!) Fortunately, the crashes that do happen, which can occur whenever an animation in battle tries to play, are all mitigated by the fact the game autosaves before every single battle. That way, you can get right back where you were, even in a dungeon...which is good, as manual saves are overworld-only. But boy, there are a ton of dragons in this! Almost too much, but is there such a thing? There are even nagas! Yes, there are recolors of enemies, but it's part of the old NES RPG charm. Another part of that charm is the fact that this is a TRICKY game. There's not exactly much story to it, it's more just a world kind of thing...again, NES RPG stuff. (The first Final Fantasy barely had a story to it, after all!) The next game, still in development, seems to have more story to it, though, and there's also a side story being written in the same universe. This game is one in what will be a trilogy, and it's a lovely look into this world inspired by those garden sculptures of dragons with reflective spheres. (Yes, that's one of the inspirations!) My only real complaint, apart from the frustrating crashes, is that the choice of music is a little small. The same melodic theme is recycled for dungeons and battles, and while it's not a bad one, it's still noticeable. But, hey, I'm a music nerd, so I notice this stuff more than others. This also fits the NES aesthetic, since those games didn't exactly have a wide variety of tunes. Overall, check this out! At only $6 US, it's worth a look :)

An RPG which heavily references where the genre came from, this is pretty old-school but it has a lot of charm! There are plenty of hidden secrets to find which make further playthroughs interesting to try. All the character and enemy designs are wonderful, and it's a joy to wander and work your way towards the final goal!. This is a lovely game to see the sorts of quality of life interaction that modern games have, by seeing a more user-friendly version of what it feels like when they're missing. Older games were much worse for that, and this pays homage to what we evolved from. Took about 8 hours on first playthough and 3 on a subsequent one, there's plenty of replayability here, especially with the randomizer mode! A charming little romp through a world full of dragons!
Charming little game, clearly inspired by dragon warrior and with a few similar clunky aspects to its inspiration while still having some quality of life features of a more modern game. Definitely worth a play through.
Dragons! What more is there to say. I love it.
I'll admit I wasn't sure if this game would be for me, but the more I played the more I found myself enjoying it and wanting to see it through to the end, which was well worth it! Exploration is done very old school, as there are no quest markers so figuring out where to go and what to do is done by exploring, finding items, and even paying characters to help hint at progression or secrets. While I was worried this would make it easy to get lost or forget where to go I never once found myself frustrated. More than anything it made exploring the world, seeing the sights, and figuring out secrets a lot of fun to the point it reminded just how much I've missed exploration without constant quest markers! Funny enough, I even enjoyed the process of buying gold bars to store my money rather than a money bank as it really added to that feeling of being a dragon hoarding all these gold bars, even if it could feel a tad tedious it added an undeniable charm for me...! Speaking of, I also absolutely loved the art style of the characters and enemies, their designs are fantastic as the whole world is inhabited by dragons which is not only incredibly cool as it's way better to be a dragon than some human, but it also lets those varied and unique designs take center stage! All in all, just a real gem that reminded me of nostalgic NES RPG adventures, and I'm happy to have played it!
This game is one of those games that is exactly what is advertised. A turn based, NES-style/inspired 1-v-1 JRPG with dragon characters. It is challenging, a bit grindy, sometimes a little cryptic, and it does all of this very intentionally. As somebody who grew up playing tons of NES rpgs, this game has the feeling down perfectly. However, I do feel it was designed to avoid some of the trappings that made many of those JRPGs hard to return to in modern day. It's rpg mechanics have a lot of depth, with the ability to build your character in different ways, a ton of different types of equipment, much of which can remain relevant if you combine it with the right accessories, and built in speed running and randomizer settings if that is your thing. There are ways to 'break the game' and create crazy min-max builds, though that is not needed. Items and status ailments are actually important, and nearly mandatory to beat some bosses. Honestly? I may be biased as a random cartoon dragon on the internet, but as a person who's favorite franchise growing up was Dragon Quest, a fan of dragons, animated/cartoon-esque stuff, a game design nerd, and a general rpg nerd, this game feels like it was designed specifically for me.
