A nice little homage to Space Invaders. Feels great, plays great, a whole lot of fun to be had if you're a fan of retro bullet hell-style arcade shooters such as this. Plus, it's free, you can't really go wrong there. It's got me interested to see how their upcoming game Super Crome: Bullet Purgatory pans out. If this game is anything to go by, it's bound to be great. The only issues I ran into are bugs involving my 360 controller but these concerns have been reported to the developer, so I've yet to try the game with controller but hopefully I'll get to soon. It works great with a standard keyboard though. The soundtrack is pretty decent if you're into Chiptune music. Although, that being said, I had to turn the game volume down to 20% via Windows upon first starting the game as I was nearly deafened with how loud it was through my headset. All in all, it's a well made, fun and addictive game that's well worth the low low price of FREE!
This game ROCKS! For free, you can't beat it.. and it now has me super hyped for their upcoming title SUPER CROME! Woot Woot! Watch Me Play and Get Hyped for "Super Crome" HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOaGq2la0a0 Great controls, addictive gameplay, amazing job dev. Solid 9 out of 10... for free! Love it! =)
Introduction
Crome: Before Purgatory brings back the old school endless waves, with a competitive global leaderboard as well as that arcade feel of difficulty and those old school, gameboy advance graphics with the green tint. A really addictive yet challenging game that test your skills trying to get the high score. (TL;DR Below)
Gameplay
If you've ever played those old arcade games like Galaxian, Galaga... and... Galaxian (Can't think of over games that are similar to these...) then you'll know what this game is all about. Your a pilot with 3 lives to get through as many waves and to rack up as much score as possible. A real tribute to the classic arcade games, that really challenges you to see if you still have what it takes to get up on the leaderboard. Controlling this game feels great, there is a sense of fluency and flow that you get as you move across the screen trying to dodge bullets whilst at the same time trying to destroy the enemy ships before your screen gets filled with so many enemies that it's just one big green block for the screen. Shooting feels great, and if you are able to wait long enough you get like a explosion type shot that damages an area that you shoot at. The enemies that you encounter are few and far between, though there might be a lot of variety to them, they will still cause you a lot of trouble. Some of them spawn smaller enemies that will crash into you, whilst others have homing bullets, some of them have shields etc. etc. It really does start getting intense as you move through the waves and when the enemies start spawning faster and faster, making it more difficult to dodge bullets. Scoring in this game has a unique twist on it though, the longer you stay alive and the more ships you destroy in a single life the better your score multiplier will be. There were a few times where the game was increasingly more intense because I didn't want to lose my multiplier, and so there is this layer of needing to stay alive for as long as possible trying to get the best score. You also level up, gaining XP with every ship you kill (start back at level 1 when you get game over), and as you level up your bullets will become faster and stronger. Though, I believe after getting double shot it stops there I would've liked to have seen more upgrades to add more variety and flavour to the game.
Graphics
The simplistic, green tint of the game gives it that odd school gameboy advanced feel, and it pulls it off very well. Along with the enemies looking like they were from Galaga and various other games of the similar genre. I do feel like there could've been more variety in the backgrounds, maybe after 5 or so waves you would shoot off to a different area or something, but apart from that, these graphics pay great respects to the old gaming days.
Music
Along with the classic look of the graphics, the music for this game is also old school gaming inspired and really suits the gameplay. As your blasting through waves of enemies, through space, you will be accompanied with classic old school sounding music that really hits that nostalgia that some of you might have for these types of games. Only thing I would've liked is more variety in the music.
Pros
• Steam leaderboards • Arcade, high score styled gameplay • Has that arcade feel of difficulty to it • Controls has this fluency and flow to it • Enemies have a variety of attacks to keep you on your tores • Really intense and challenging • Score multiplier makes the game even more intense
Cons
• Needs more variety in music • Different areas as you progress through waves • Along with the different areas, you could also include different types of enemies • Would've liked to of seen more bosses
Closing Thoughts
Just a quick glance at this game and you probably wouldn't think much of it, but it surely is an intense, challenging arcade styled game which pays its respects to the 8-bit arcade style, along with it's gameboy advanced look to it. The Global Steam Leaderboards keeps the game interesting trying to get to the top or beat your own score, would defiantly recommend grabbing this game! Crome is an attempt at spelling Chrome, only badly. It's also an attempt at making a video game, only badly. Its a 2D retro pixel shmup that looks completely terrible, possibly because the developers thought they were developing for GameBoy(tm) and not the PC, or perhaps because they are not good at doing video game graphics, in which case it would be a bad idea to try making video games (let alone dumping them on Steam). It plays a bit like Galaga, only worse, but you can move up and down as well as left and right. This is surely the best outcome we could reasonably expect after 40 years of innovation in the gaming industry. Resolution and controls are locked, and can't be changed or customised to improve the visuals or the control experience. A choice was made to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. The developer was unable to find a way to make the game display properly in 16:9 widescreen, another unacceptable flaw. The quality here is obviously far too low to recommend to PC gamers. It's not even exactly free, as this was intended as an advertisement for another game from the same developer, but with slightly better (but still unacceptably poor) graphics. I have a general policy of not recommending advertisements to gamers, especially not poor quality ones.
Damn good shmup for free! Random waves, varied enemies, unlimited levels, go for the hi-score !
