fun
BASTA!!!
First of all, I don't think this is a BAD game, certainly not for $20. I think that's a fair price. But this game has so many little annoyances and feels mechanically shallow. The combat is fine. Just fine. It's a little slow and janky, and just very mundane. You have light attack, strong attack, jump attack, running attack, either with a one-handed weapon and shield, or a two-handed weapon. The two-handed is particularly slow, and I found myself never using it unless I wanted to use its weapon art. It does have much more range, however, which comes in handy with some enemies. Some of these enemies are incredibly annoying. They aren't mechanically difficult, just janky as all get out. The large demon monsters have ridiculously small hitboxes despite being the largest base enemy in the game. You can only target their frickin knees, which makes A LOT of ranged moves just completely miss. Some of the timings of their attacks, (and the attacks of the smaller death knight demons) will overlap and double hit you, meaning you get zero recovery frames while taking damage from a single instance. Very lame. Enemies can hit you while you're exiting an execution animation, despite spamming dodge before it ends, which just feels unfair. Properly blocking attacks in time with regular combat is useless, because it takes ages to raise your shield if you aren't already holding it up, including the fast block shields. Itemization is very poor. There are maybe two or three items I found that seemed genuinely good and build-defining. Synergies are almost non-existent. The best boon I've seen is the one that makes weapon art zone attacks fire twice. BUT, so far as I've seen, there's only like 3 or 4 weapon arts that count as a zone attack, and only two of them are worth using, since the other 2 have either no range or an insanely long cooldown. So I mostly just spammed double zone attack stalagmite, since it was the only good option. The other item I found good, was the Amulet of Crusader's Might which just makes you flat out deal more damage than anything else in the game, how fun and interesting. Angel form is largely underutilized, mostly feels like I save it for the boss just to get more damage in. There are only two angel forms, and despite them having access to a wide range of moves, it feels pointless to do anything but spam heavy attack given how little time you're in angel form. I would've liked a way to make an angel form build that lets me largely stay in angel form for more than 15 seconds at a time and have a reason to use their other abilities. I think the bosses are decent, they're all unique, and none of them feel like "basic enemy with an upgrade". However, AND SPOILERS, the final boss is just a guy that uses all the abilities of the other bosses in the game, which feels lazy and uninspired. I get the idea is to have mastered all the other bosses to know this one's moveset, but like come on, I wanted something new. This game is incredibly stingy with experience, the last 12 or so levels are painstakingly slow. I played on hellish difficulty only as soon as I unlocked it, and I can't begin to imagine how little xp you get playing on anything lower. Not that is matters much, because leveling up unlocks basically nothing. All the stuff you care about is earned in the first 15 levels, and everything after that is dog water. You occasionally unlock new armor sets just for leveling, but almost none of them have any boons so why would you want them anyway. The boons they do have are largely unimportant, like gaining mana when you get hit with melee attacks. Why would I take that over just having more mana? Side quests and bounties are boring, uninspired, and unrewarding. Bounties should just be an automatic thing btw, I see no reason why I have to keep collecting and completing the same six bounties over and over again after every mission. Bounties give gold and you'll basically just complete them ad nauseum as you play naturally. Side quests for the other characters add "some" substance, but they're basically all the same. Go to specific mission, find thing, pick thing up, go back home. "Artifacts", "Scraps", "Logs", it's all the same, just find the glowy thing and bring it back. Also, you get practically nothing for doing so. The blacksmith has sidequests where you help him forge powerful weapons from the souls of the bosses, but doing so requires you to trek through every damn level again to pick up glowy crap. And the weapons aren't all that powerful anyway. Collecting lore notes for the scholar is kind of worth it, since it unlocks new boons to appear in your runs, but given the RNG nature of the game, you'll probably rarely see the boons you unlocked, and again, they often aren't very potent or build-defining. Bosses give like no xp. World boss encounters after the third mission give 660xp on Hellish. That's it. That's all you get. No gold, basically no souls, and a measly amount of xp for defeating the second to last boss. The actual final boss rewards you with.....an unskippable cutscene that you have to sit through every time you successfully finish a run. THANK YOU. There are also no more obtainable boons from the final bosses after the third district mission outside of purchasing a boon from the scholar. But the boons you purchase from the scholar seem to only come out at the lowest common rarity, making them basically pointless. I do not hate this game. I think the world design, sound design, and overall feel is great. But it also feels like everything in the game was made by different person with a different idea, and none of them ever spoke to one another to make the game feel cohesive. For $20, it's a decent amount of content, and a fine world to mess around with for 10 hours or so. But trying to actually play it properly and make a cool build and care about the characters is downright impossible.
Sonion Ring. Fix the progression loss. Actually diabolical. Giga Jank camera too.
