Cranium Conundrum, developed by Falling Star Games and published by Sometimes You, is a physics-based puzzle platformer that centers as much on player creativity as it does on traditional gameplay progression. Released into Early Access in 2016, the game positions itself as both a platforming experience and a sandbox for constructing custom “dream worlds” using an integrated level editor. Its ambition lies in blending physics experimentation, community content creation, and light multiplayer elements into a cohesive creative playground. At its foundation, Cranium Conundrum is a physics-driven platformer. Players guide customizable characters through stages filled with moving platforms, levers, gravity shifts, and interactive objects. The puzzles rely heavily on real-time physics interactions—objects react to weight, momentum, and triggers—requiring players to manipulate the environment rather than simply execute precise jumps. Early levels showcase the potential of these mechanics, encouraging experimentation with switches, blocks, and environmental hazards to reach goals. When systems behave as intended, the interactions can feel satisfying and inventive. A central feature of the game is its built-in level editor. This tool allows players to create their own stages using a variety of blocks, materials, logic triggers, and environmental modifiers. The editor includes support for custom layouts, physics objects, and scripted interactions, enabling creative freedom for those willing to invest time in design. The concept suggests a community-driven ecosystem where players can build and share unique experiences. In theory, this shifts the focus from a fixed campaign to an evolving library of user-generated content. However, the execution of this vision has faced challenges. Although multiplayer elements and collaborative editing were introduced during Early Access, the broader infrastructure—such as a robust central hub for sharing and rating levels—has remained limited. Without a strong community presence or streamlined sharing tools, the creative potential of the editor is underutilized. Players interested in designing levels may find the tools intriguing, but the lack of widespread content circulation can diminish long-term engagement. From a technical standpoint, Cranium Conundrum reflects its extended Early Access history. Performance inconsistencies, occasional instability, and uneven polish contribute to an experience that can feel unfinished. Physics interactions sometimes behave unpredictably, which can either add emergent charm or result in frustration during puzzle-solving. The interface, while functional, lacks refinement compared to more established physics sandbox titles. Visually, the game adopts a colorful, stylized aesthetic. Environments are constructed from simple geometric shapes and textures, emphasizing function over elaborate artistic detail. The presentation complements the sandbox concept, though it does not aim for high-end graphical realism. Sound design remains minimal, supporting gameplay without significantly enhancing immersion. Despite its limitations, Cranium Conundrum offers moments of creativity and experimentation that may appeal to players interested in physics-based construction tools. Its low entry cost and accessible system requirements make it an easy title to explore casually. For players who enjoy tinkering with level editors and constructing experimental puzzle spaces, it provides a foundation that can be rewarding in small bursts. Ultimately, Cranium Conundrum stands as a concept-driven indie project with notable ambition. Its physics puzzles and level-building tools hint at a dynamic creative platform, but inconsistent polish and limited community integration prevent it from fully realizing its potential. It remains a niche experience best suited for players who value sandbox experimentation and are willing to overlook technical rough edges in favor of creative freedom. Rating: 5/10

I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.

A somewhat abandoned game project. Cranium Conundrum released in 2016. Up until 2017 it did get some updates. Then suddenly nothing for three years. Most people figured it got abandoned. But then: In 2020 came a new update. In which they promised some features. As of today... That was the last update. Kind of seems like it isn't entirely dead. Someone is working on this, but slowly. However: Such long pauses aren't nice. The last update did break some things. Mainly: The custom levels from before. I can't really recommend such a game. Especially when it feels so abandoned. Future updates might change my view. But for now: I'll give a negative review. Hopefully it will get finished someday.
