Developed and published by Mikołaj Spychał, Courage for a Kiss is the third release from the Polish developer who has released some “low-profile” Visual Novels on Steam since 2017. Courage for a Kiss follows a group of students planning and performing a school play. As Ryan, players will have to make sure the performance is a success while at the same time, dealing with the dramas and insecurity of four female students. Will he manage to fall in love and still help projecting a school-play? The story is very simple and delivers exactly what it's supposed to be: a simple and lightwave slice of life novel. It depicts a year in the life of Ryan as he meets four different school girls, each one with a unique personality that may or may not appeal to you. Storywise, it’s clearly a romance novel as you’ll have choices that determine your date. The script is well written, even though the pace of the whole game is relatively unbalanced. Some parts feel somehow rushed or undeveloped, while others don’t. The routes are simple and not deeply redefined, but they end up working generally well within the game’s plot. Dialogues are produced with simplicity, but at the same time with care as well. The humour falls towards the corny side, but blends with the overall game style. There’s no adult content and no patch is available, but included through the dating routes are some light fan-service, that ends up being more visual than anything, but still delivering spicy dialogues. Visually, the renders are hand-drawn by the developer and the quality has been increasing since the very first game published, but as can be seen, it’s still looking amateurish and let’s say, unique. Their details are improving and clothes show some attention which is always nice to see, like Cosplay or seasonal clothing. On the overall the design is generic but dedication and identity is what counts! One of the most impressive feature regarding renders is perhaps how they are animated with emotional expressions alongside the gameplay, giving them a more dynamic presence. Their placement is also well directed, with characters moving across the scene based on the situation and events. This technique further extends the interactivity with players, and it’s always welcome. The design presentation of the user interface is nice, and as can be seen by some images the text outline borders change based on the character dialogues. Some colors like yellow or aren’t the best ones for this effect, and it would've been better to stick with the same color. Regardless, fonts and menus are nice and pleasant. Backgrounds on the other hand, are well designed with a fantastic presentation. Some even change based on the time of the day and the effects such as the sunset definitely adds genuinity to the whole design. There are a large variety of locations and they are pretty decent. The soundtrack presented in the game is a mix between relaxing guitar chords for routine gameplay with instances of electronic/pop waves that characterize special moments and events. Overall, it’s a nice upbeat tune that goes alongside the game’s attitude on a romantic slice of life. Although it features several endings and different romantic routes, it’s a medium-short visual novel with up to 5 gameplay hours, that can be extended when achievement hunting. Overall, it’s a great lightwave experience, particularly interesting if purchased during a special sale.
Courage for a Kiss is a cute little Visual Novel about a Play that you and 4 Girls want to perform at the School. Also it is combined with a possible Romance bewteen you and one of them. All around it wasnt anything special, the Writing however was really cute and the entire thing felt really wholesome. There are Scenes where the Protagonist and one of the Girls have Sex, but they are left out, a R18 Patch would really fit and make it feel a little more complete since it is kinda weird if it is mentioned and you see them start, but then it just jumps to the next day. I also really liked the Choices that you can make since they change the Play itself and of course who you will end up with. There is also a small feature that tells you if a choice has an effect and also might give you a hint on which girl liked your answer. Like I said, the Writing is probably my favorite Part and there are also a few funny lines, the Translation however isnt perfect. There are quite a few Grammer mistakes like a missing "a" and "the" or other similar mistakes. They wont really hinder you from enjoying the Game however. I also really liked Evelyn she really is just adorable, with her being shy and a little socially awkward. I liked the Art, but it isnt anything extremely good like you might expect from like High Budget Games. If you consider though who made this Game, then it really isnt bad and it fits the rest of the Game. I also really like the Sprites. Little Fun Fact, there is a Pewdiepie Reference in this Game for you to find :) One last thing that I have to add is that the game feels a little bit laggy and if I am not mistaken, then there is a small Error in the Writing because the Protagonist borrows Evelyn something and she returns it twice to him. Overall, I have to say that I enjoyed the VN even if there are a few minor Things that I didnt like 100%. Score: 7.5/10 Check out my Currator Page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34401214/ for more Reviews :)
I've been given a pre-release copy of this game by the developer (I've experienced his previous two VNs, Jake's Love Story and Nekokoro in similar circumstances) and I have to say, its definitely their best work yet. Like the previous ones, it's a very simple high school romance story, spiced up by a few unusual gimmicks, but at its core very tame and by-the-numbers. What definitely improved, however, is the execution – the pacing of the story is very consistent and it doesn't feel rushed despite frequent time skips. The heroines are likeable, even if their routes are too similar to each other and the setting feels alive thanks to the author's usual attention to detail – many details you learn along the way and minor desitions you make gets referenced later down the line. The aforementioned gimmick, this time taking the form of a school play that evolves according to your choices – it's very fun to observe both subtle and very-not-subtle differences in how it plays out for each path you take. Visually it's also an improvement, especially over the unfortunate character sprites from Nekokoro, but it's still very simple and sadly lacks proper CGs. This makes some moments, especially those connected to romance, somewhat underwhelming. Backgrounds, as always, are rather top-quality and along with simple animations make for a pleasant, even if not particularly sophisticated experience. Music is fun, although sometimes a bit of an overkill, distracting you rather than staying in the background. In summary, I think this is a fun little game, at least if you're ok with extremely cookie-cutter romance VN experience. It won't surprise you and there are way better ones out there, but for what it is, I can't hate it. Not sure if it's worth the full asking price of $10, but if you find it on sale, feel encouraged to give it a try. ------------- PS If you're interested in more quality visual novels, check out my curator page.
Gameplay
Courage For A Kiss is a visual novel where you create and execute a play with four other girls. Throughout the three acts this game has you will need to make decisions that will have an affect on both the play and your relationships with the four girls. A simple premise but it's well executed.
Story
This game is short, it only took me around 2 hours to finish my first playthrough of the game. Despite this the time allocated is used effectively and manages to flesh out each character enough so that you care about them (except one). The only character I didn't like was Amelia, she needs a rework and just doesn't come across as interesting. Other people seem to think so to since her achievements are the least common among the playerbase. The only other flaw are minor grammatical mistakes. It really doesn't take away from the experience in any way. [EDIT: THESE GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED IN THE LATEST PATCH]
Conclusion
So I would recommend this game for someone who want a short romance story with some replayability. The best character from my experience is Stella, Jennifer is a close second and Evelyn is also a valid pick. I would give this game a solid 8/10.
The story started off cutely but it turned dull rather quickly. The grammar and spelling errors made it difficult to really get into the game. It was very disappointing, I regret buying this game.
It took me only around 1 hour to finish it,but I really enjoyed this time. The concept is good and it’s fun to read, the music is also good. I would recommend this game, but you should probably wait until it’s on sale.
A nice little VN. Contains a couple of gimmicks, such as the play, which admittedly does change depending on your choices, but it's not that interesting IMO. The other gimmick is the trademark telltale popup stating someone will remember that. It doesn't really do anything, since you can tell what 80% of choices will lead to without it. It has plenty of typos, but they won't bother you unless you're a grammar nazi. Characters in the game are nice and flushed out in their own routes. There's plenty of jokes, some good some not so good, but none of them terrible. The writing overall is pretty good with some cheesy lines here and there. Compared to the devs previous game, NEKOKORO, I like this one more, its nothing groundbreaking but a cute little distraction for you to read while taking a pause from one of your main games.
