Copy Editor: A RegEx Puzzle

What an unusual subject. But this is a good puzzle game. Very weird rules, and maybe not the broadest appeal - but, play this, and you will be better at doing a lot of things. It's obvious what for programmers, but for others too, this is incredibly useful stuff in a broad sense - useful for updating text, or searching for specific things, or simply replacing all occurrences of one name with another while maintaining grammatical rules. The development team is responsive, fun, and passionate about both gameplay and learning. A delightful fusion and a solid recommend if you think maybe you're interested. If you're totally unaware what RegEx is, you may want to give it a pass... but it's a good mind-bending standalone puzzle in it's own right, too. (tips: keep regexr (website) open in the background. have a pocket guide to regex in another tab so you can look up whether you need a ? or a + or a *. Don't be shy to use the tips, either - solving without them can be quite hard sometimes!)

Do write text parsers? Do you like dream in RegEx? Do you feel that you need RegEx even when you step away from your programming? Then fear not, this game is for you.

It could have been better. I hope it gets better.

Middling UX and "fun" meta mechanics soured what I hoped would be a gamified method to pick up regex basics. Will just google for a web based alternative some other time, I suppose.

Sadly Im also agreeing with bad reviews here. Great potential. Fails to deliver the lesson before it gives you puzzle. Every regex rule should have one lesson and then it can also dive into some tricks to ease the work, but it is not doing much. The star system is badly implemented, it demotivates. while, similar to Zachtronics, its giving a graph, which would be on its own enough to hint that perhaps robust solution could be polished. Im so so sad this didnt work as I imagined it would.

Recommendation: Not Recommended I bought "Copy Editor" hoping to get better at practical, real-world Regex, but I have ended up incredibly frustrated by the game's artificial throttling. Instead of letting you solve text challenges using standard, elegant, and efficient Regex patterns, the game constantly locks basic syntax elements (like the * or ? quantifiers, or $1 backreferences in the replace field). While the developer likely intended this to create iterative "puzzles," the actual result is that it forces more knowledgeable developers to write four or five fragile, brute-force rules to do a job that a single, standard Regex rule would solve instantly. It doesn't teach you how to write good, efficient Regex—it teaches you how to write clumsy workarounds to satisfy an artificial game engine. If you want a puzzle game that very slowly iterates over logical puzzles using Regex characters as a skin, you might enjoy this. But if you are actually trying to learn practical Regex to use in your day-to-day work, this game will only slow you down, frustrate you and teach you bad habits.

As someone who was looking to improve my regex skills, this puzzle game fell way below my expectations in both implementation and presentation. As some other reviewers have mentioned, to make a long story short, the puzzles are clunky and awkward. I don't recommend this game (specially if you are just getting started with regex), and I wish I could get my money back. If you want to learn regular expressions, just look for free tutorials on the Internet, some of which are interactive.
