Information / Review English
Cold Verdict is an adventure thriller with drama elements, which was developed by Astronomic Games.
Gameplay / Story
The beginning of the adventure is very reminiscent of the SAW series, as the actors wake up in a dark room and do not know how they got there in the first place, where they are and who is responsible for all of this in the first place. I don't want to reveal too much, but anyone who knows the SaW films knows that it's about finding a way out and getting out of here. However, this is not easy as there are traps everywhere and you have to solve small puzzles before the timer goes down to 0. The story is advanced by looking at objects. If you click on one, dialog windows open with several options, which you then have to select. But every decision / answer also has consequences. So in the end it is not sure which of the actors will survive in the end.
Pro
+ is reminiscent of the SAW films + exciting, entertaining story + Decisions with consequences + multiple ends + matching graphics / background music + many setting options + good price / performance ratio + Achievements
Contra
- very short playing time
Conclusion
Anyone who knows the SAW films will feel at home here. An entertaining but suspenseful thriller with a complex story awaits you.
Gameplay / Geschichte
Pro
+ erinnert an die SAW Filme + spannende,kurzweilige Geschichte + Entscheidungen mit Folgen + mehrere Enden + passende Grafik/Musikuntermalung + viele Einstellungsmöglichkeiten + gutes Preis/Leistungsverhältnis + Errungenschaften
Kontra
- sehr kurze Spielzeit
Fazit
Wer die SAW-Filme kennt, wird sich hier heimisch fühlen. Ein kurzweiliger, aber spannender Thriller mit einer komplexen Handlung erwartet dich. I was skeptical at the beginning since I have never played a 3D VN, but I was wrong, I enjoyed this game thoroughly. The story is about five people waking up in a dark basement, having no memory of what brought them to this place. None of them knows the other but turned out an event in the past linked them all to a tragedy. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2827896171 You play as Leon, a young security guard who has no clue why he was brought to this dark and old place, solving riddles and trying to cope with the other people. The choices have a huge impact on the game and the characters reactions around you. I actually kept on suspecting one after another, each one is hiding something but you need to squeeze information from them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2827895685 Some of the characters are likable, I didn't like the 3D models at the beginning but I somehow liked them, I think the game would have been even better with voiceovers. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2827897702 Pros: +Interesting story. +Interesting characters. +Choices and consequences. +Good soundtracks. +Multiple endings and routes. +Manual save. +Steam achievements. Cons: -Quite short, wish for more content. Clearly, the game has multiple endings, I got the good ending myself, being the good and helpful guy, but would you trust the people around you or not, it's all up to you. Looking forward to a sequel. Recommended to people who enjoy mystery and investigation VN. Cold Verdict is a good short visual novel with choices and different endings. It’s not an erotic VN and also no real escape room game. 5 people, who are unknown to each other, awake in a locked room. Along their journey to find an exit, they are forced to share their memories about a common tragedy. I bought it for less than 1€ and recommend it for that price.
Cold Verdict started off grabbing my interest with it’s story. I’m a sucker for seemingly random people waking up together and having to piece together a puzzle. The longer the game went on though the more of my interest got lost. It seemed like some pretty thin reasons to have these people together and when it came time for the ending I was even more surprised at who got to live and die. It just didn’t make much sense to me given what had been revealed. The characters themselves weren’t all that interesting at times. They felt a little wooden in their dialogue, too much straight business talk without much emotion. Although Landon had the opposite issue. Also Dean didn’t get very much to do compared to the rest. There are a decent amount of choices you can make and they can change the story a bit. The art was alright for the people themselves but the environment and objects felt a little low resolution and lacking detail. I played Cold Verdict on Linux. I happened to try to run Cold Verdict on my system that uses Linux Mint 20.3 and found it just crashed at launch. No error and nothing in the log file. It does however run outside of Steam by running the executable itself as well as it runs fine on my Manjaro system using the Steam launcher so that is how I played the game. It never crashed on me on my Manjaro system. I didn’t notice any other bugs or glitches. You can manually save whenever you want and there are 54 save slots. Alt-Tab didn’t work. Game Engine: Ren’Py 7.4.8.1895 Game Version Played: 1.0 Graphics API: OpenGL Disk Space Used: 670 MB GPU Usage: 1-15 % VRAM Usage: 740-1620 MB CPU Usage: 2-14 % RAM Usage: 2.6-2.9 GB Overall I wouldn’t call Cold Verdict a bad game but I also can’t call it a great one. The dialogue could have used some work as well as the plot and art. I have played far worse visual novels but also far better. I paid $4.20 CAD for it and felt the price was fine. I finished my first play through in 55 minutes. My Score: 6/10 My System: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X | Mesa 21.3.2 | Manjaro 21.2.1 | Mate 1.26.0 | Kernel 5.15.12-1-MANJARO
Genre
Eine Visual Novel mit Psycho Thriller Elementen
Story
Achievements
Very, very short history: it can be played in just one hour. It's more an intro than a real game as the ending is completely open, so I guess the dev will release the full game on the future, or at least more chapters, if not, it is a complete waste of time. Steam achievements are buggy, despite I completed the game, I just received one achievement. Perhaps because for some reason, even it has a linux native client, it launched through proton when I tried to play remotely with Steam Link and it hung (that's why it appears as I've played more than 5h) English is not my native language but I found several typos and orthographic errors, so I guess english native speakers would find it quite horrible. I bought it at half price so I'm not mad for paying 1,6€, but if I'd have known, I would saved it the money and the time.
1st let me say I do not like visual novels and this isn't one. There are choices and there is a very good story here. You could even call it a mystery. It's the reading I don't care for. But there were actually enough fun elements, the sense of mystery, the slight detective angle, the interesting characters, all with short back-stories, and one hell of an ending to keep you engaged. Sure there are different paths, but as short as it was, I was satisfied with the game overall for the price. Try it and I think you'll enjoy an hour or two of what the hell happened here?!! I know there's a sequel which I believe is even shorter, but I hope they'll make a 3rd installment that's even longer!!!
Leon and Clair, police investigator, so it's Resident Evil that had been catched by the "Saw" that is looking for justice. Pretty short game with some beautiful soundtrack, I hope it was written specially for this game. Nice achievments and plot twist, everyone can obtain the ending he wants after all. Good luck and we still waiting for the next game))
Cold Verdict is a short visual novel about a group of strangers trying to escape from a killer's maze. It's reminiscent of the Saw movies, and mostly involves the characters piecing together why they are there. The story is easy to follow, involving a tragedy that happened in the past, and as you play, everyone's part is revealed. There are a good deal of choices throughout, and every character can live or die, so I appreciated that choices matter in that respect. As a visual novel, the writing is decent and every character felt unique and had their own personality. The music is very good and immersive; dark ambient tracks that build suspense. Each track was great and really fit the mood. As someone not really into the gore, torture, etc., that the Saw movies are known for, I can appreciate that Cold Verdict isn't gratuitous in that respect, but I think this will disappoint people looking for a bloodier, grittier experience. Overall, I enjoyed the game. It was a nice way to spend 40 minutes, and it was a fun experience.
Finished it in under an hour, so this game was short but sweet! It presented an interesting story, and a fair number of choices. And was that a sequel tease at the end? I'll be certainly keeping an eye out!
