About
Coded Black is a bold, narrative-driven experience that immerses players in the hidden and haunting histories of anti-Blackness in the US and UK.
This is an experience designed to be difficult – mentally and emotionally. Drawing from primary sources, historical records and scholarly analysis, Coded Black offers a journey through past atrocities and moments of triumph.

Explore two distinct, atmospheric scenes – a plantation and a modern 20th-century city – each filled with real historical documents and audio visual storytelling. With a structure that surfaces different content in each run, Coded Black is a narrative crafted for both personal reflection and educational engagement.

Amidst the darkness, Coded Black also shines. Players can find glowing “balls of light” that reveal stories of Black achievement, resilience, and humanity – offering powerful moments of reflection and hope.
Blurring the lines between game and museum exhibit, this is an experience about witnessing, understanding and feeling the weight of history through an interactive lens.

I really wanted to like this game. It has a lot of good information and things that people should be aware of. Instead, it landed on a 4/10. The game has 4 chapters. Each chapter has a map and a time period. Exploring the map, you can interact with neutral/good things (white spheres), bad things (yellow-green skulls), blurred out charachters, or simply by walking at a certain place. Each interaction triggers a narrative; either text, a picture, text with a picture, or read aloud text telling a personal or news story relating the black history. The stories mostly come from the USofA, but some are also from Britain or even France. Most triggers can only be activated once (but not all) and there are no indication where a spot triggering a narration will be, forcing you to walk through the entire map if you want to hear everything. I really like that most of the stories are either factual or personal reflections and do not try too preachy (preachers excluded off course ;) ). This gives you a chance to absorb and reflect. And now for the reason for the bad review. I have severe issues with the composition and the pacing and minor issues with the format. Most stories do not have years attached to them. A story with a year is from 2013a and talked about 'The War' without explaining that it was in fact the First World War it was covering. Stories are spread out across centuries and have no specific tie-in to the map period, making it rather confusing and taking away from the narration (which I guess this game should be all about). And then there is the voice acting. When hearing a young American black girl, it does not make sense that she has a very British accent. Another complaint is that the games seems to be pretty poorly optimised, so expect a rather hot GPU. Except from chapter 3, chapters are generally too large. It would have made sense to spread the material out over 8-10 chapters and group the stories periodically so as to get better cohernce and be able to track the development over time (and shorter gaming sessions). A help feature that could indicate where you still need to explore could also be good or, alternatively, an indicator of where the location related triggers are. A minor thing is that they talk a lot about black role models and a lot of them are featured. However, for sympathy I guess, they choose to show a lot of black children during the end credits – not much inspiration there. I took the time to try to get everything out of this game as I wanted to learn, so expect around 4h. This game has the parts that could make up a good and education game, but unfortunately falls flat.
