Reviews
Really cool game and atmosphere, it kinda reminds me of Resident Evil 4 in that regard. The performance is excelent at Epic quality on my machine and the story is really intresting considering that it is really rare to find a game that uses Slavic mythology as a base. The only negative is that tutorial and intro could be a bit better in the start of the game but I was able to figure it out in a few minutes and get emersed in the story. Highly worth the price tag as you can see a lot of effort went into it!
I really like it and would recommend it for sure. If you like first-person atmospheric games and mythology than this is for you. Slavic legends are amazing and should be showcased more! Its an indie game and the dev put so much effort so I will always support it!
I have played this game before locally when game conference happened. I must say this is a MASSIVE improvement. It is a totally different game. There are a bunch of new details. Animations are great and the gameplay itself always making me feel there is something behind that bush. Code Alkonost also gives you a feeling that you are playing through a well though out story. It is not just some random indie game. It is totally worth it. I know it is beta for some of the minor quirks so I ignored them but everything else is well done for such a small team!
Code Alkonost: Awakening of Evil is a must-play for fans of survival horror and Slavic mythology enthusiasts. Its very cool blend of storytelling, atmosphere. One of the great features of Code Alkonost is its sanity mechanic, which dynamically alters the game environment based on Vera's mental state. I like graphics, and music. Great job for a new studio :D
The game follows an interesting and eerie storyline, but the atmosphere could have been done a bit better. The monsters are scary, but not too difficult to avoid. The puzzles in the game are engaging and not too easy to solve. If you enjoy horror games with puzzle elements and an intriguing story, I recommend giving this game a chance!
First small game from small indie team - so not everything is polished. Intrigue and unique story which just started - I am waiting new parts to continue the story. I want more ethno music from the game - it is wonderful. Scream parts are very effective.
This game was a lot of fun. I definitely felt lost at times and had to look a lot of things up. It's rough around the edges still in its current form, but regardless I loved the narrative, the music, the environments and atmosphere, and the pacing. It's clear a lot of love has gone into this game, and I'm looking forward to seeing the roadmap unfold!
Code Alkonost: Awakening of Evil is an atmospheric horror-adventure that leans heavily into Slavic folklore, weaving its dark themes around ancient legends, forest spirits, and the thin boundary between the natural world and the supernatural. From its opening moments, the game establishes a sense of personal urgency by framing its story around two sisters: one lost within a forbidden forest and the other determined to retrieve her, even if it means stepping into a realm where myth is not only real but hungry. The disappearance becomes a gateway into a world shaped by ritual, ancestral memory, and forces that predate humanity. This emotional grounding gives the horror a human anchor, preventing it from becoming just a sequence of scares and instead crafting a narrative of duty, dread, and familial devotion. The world itself is the game’s strongest asset. Thick woods, ancient shrines, dilapidated rural structures, and uncanny ritual sites create a sense of a place both sacred and profaned. The developers draw heavily from Slavic mysticism — creatures like forest guardians, witches, spirits, and demonic entities lurk behind every whisper of wind or flicker of torchlight. This setting elevates the game beyond typical indie horror fare by giving it a lore base rarely explored in Western horror titles. The use of folk-inspired music reinforces this, combining droning voices, rustic instrumentation, and distant echoes to create an auditory landscape that feels older than the characters themselves. Sound and visual design often work hand in hand to make the player feel watched, hunted, or subtly manipulated, even in calm stretches where nothing jumps out. Gameplay unfolds through a mixture of exploration, puzzle-solving, light survival elements, and narrative progression. As you traverse both earthly and unearthly environments, you gather items, decipher clues, and navigate through dangerous encounters where stealth or quick thinking become essential. The game rarely relies on brute force; instead, it asks players to be observant and patient, rewarding careful study of the environment and punishing recklessness. Many puzzles blend naturally into the environment, tying their logic to ritualistic or mythic symbolism rather than arbitrary patterns. This helps sustain immersion but can occasionally make solutions feel obscure if players are unfamiliar with the cultural background informing the game’s world. The narrative, while often quiet and fragmented, steadily grows in psychological weight. Themes of grief, obsession, and the cost of confronting ancient forces emerge gradually. Encounters with spirits, both benign and malevolent, convey a sense of morality rooted in folklore rather than modern sensibilities — some entities are not evil by nature but become dangerous through imbalance or neglect. This complexity adds nuance to the game’s horror, making it less about jump scares and more about the unsettling coexistence of humans and the mythic world they once respected but now barely understand. By the time the story reaches its darker revelations, the player has absorbed enough of the world’s logic to grasp the tragedy beneath its supernatural threat. Yet, for all its ambition, Code Alkonost also shows the hallmarks of a small-team indie project. Technical and aesthetic inconsistencies puncture immersion at times. Some animations feel stiff, certain lines of dialogue lack emotional punch, and environmental detail varies from scene to scene. Occasional sound mixing issues or abrupt transitions can momentarily break the spell the game works hard to maintain. While none of these flaws completely undermine the experience, they create a sense of unevenness that players expecting AAA production values may find jarring. The game’s pacing can also drift; long stretches of exploration may feel too sparse, while some puzzle segments disrupt narrative momentum. Replayability is limited due to the game’s linear structure. Once you’ve experienced the story, solved its puzzles, and uncovered its secrets, there is little incentive to return. The strength of the game rests in its atmosphere, sense of discovery, and emotional tension — qualities that naturally diminish once you know what lies ahead. That said, players who enjoy exploring rich lore may appreciate revisiting certain areas to catch details they missed during the first run. Despite its imperfections, Code Alkonost: Awakening of Evil remains a distinctive entry in the horror genre. Its commitment to Slavic mythology gives it a unique identity, and its blend of environmental storytelling, eerie soundscapes, and mythic dread creates a haunting experience that lingers long after the credits roll. It is not a polished blockbuster, but a focused, earnest, and culturally rich horror tale crafted with clear passion. For players who appreciate atmospheric horror, folklore-driven narratives, and slow-burning tension over spectacle, the game offers a memorable and unsettling journey into a world where ancient forces wait just beyond the treeline. Rating: 7/10
If you enjoy shorter games with stunning graphics, a gripping story, and a rich atmosphere inspired by Slavic mythology, Code Alkonost is a must-play. It offers an unforgettable narrative-driven experience that pulls you into a dark, folklore-infused world. Highly recommended!
